@CelloMomOnCars It's weird how this myth persists.

In Norway, lots of people fully rely on heat pumps to get them through the winter.

And it can get so very cold in the northernmost parts, so they wouldn't do that if it didn't work.

Here is my small nervous Formica subsericea. These are black field ants, you can tell them from carpenter ants because they are shiner, only come in one size (no majors with big heads) and their thorax has a dent rather than a hump. They also move differently from carpenter ants which tend to be more deliberate and less spastic.

Today I gave them fruit flies and they have eagerly piled them up in front of the queen. Who looks like she just wants to go to sleep.

But it also means that I'm not constantly throwing junk out.

When I throw something out a few months after buying it, it feels like I'm throwing cash into the bin.

Awful feeling.

I'll always try hard to avoid that.

@msquebanh I immediately thought "danger" when I saw the pictures.

There's an invasive type here, the Heracleum mantegazzianum, which does look slightly different from this one.

It's not associated with anything positive. The sap causes swelling and blisters, and may leave scars if enough skin is damaged.

It's a target for eradication, though that's very hard to achieve.

@msquebanh Telling indigenous people that immigrants are a problem.

Like they didn't know that already.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh I just mean that a lot of European immigrants in the past were much worse than anyone who's coming in now.

And then white people complain to the very people who most suffered from that.

It's both very offensive and lacking in awareness.

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@msquebanh It looks like it's safe to say it's been over 200 years. As early as the US war of independence, when black soldiers who fought against it were granted freedom in Canada after the British lost.

Lots of very unfair laws, enacted by popular demand, too.

Even for much of last century there were heavy restrictions on black and chinese immigration, for purely racist reasons.

Even British citizens got refused entry for not being white.

Worse than I thought it was.

Both to be thankful you don't have to eat any emergency things, which are in that category for good reason, and that you know you can still fall back a little before hunger becomes a real threat.

I remember talking to people who lived through the 1944/45 famine, and the tastes they talked about weren't very fun.

Some of my friends that are convicted felons are 100% innocent of what they were accused and convicted of. Some of my friends that are convicted felons are guilty, and absolutely did what they were accused of. I don't make fun of people for being convicted felons, and I don't ostracize them. Instead, I don't let bad people around me. My definition of bad focuses on the choices that a person made in the past, and the choices that they make now. Some of the worst people, will never be felons.

@mekkaokereke When a random unknown black guy becomes a felon, lots of people are sure he must be an awful person.

When a certain specific awful person gets a 34-count conviction, he gets more money thrown at him.

It's hard to believe this game is fair, when they make it so obvious.

There’s certain technology that I earnestly wonder why we abandoned it. For example, digital audio players (DAPs).

These devices provided something smartphones don’t: a distraction-free way of playing music.

And they were way more personal because everything on your DAP was put there by you! They were a collection of your genuine taste!

justafrog,
@justafrog@mstdn.social avatar

@atomicpoet For me, it's the choice between buying a separate device, or installing some app on my phone so I can use it like that.

The important part is to disable all notification sounds and vibrations, because those will keep piling in no matter what.

But I figure my complete lack of FOMO is very rare.

I don't personally know anyone else who can both know there are notifications and simply not check them until tomorrow or the day after.

Because right now, I just want the music.
