Birder, Tali’s person, Boise State alum, Master Naturalist, and blue bird living in a red state. Fourth-generation Idahoan, one-time Alaskan. Former dog musher and director of Alaska Bird Observatory, now teaching environmental education in prisons. I post photos from my walks and travels, dogs, birds, and other random things I see. Most bird photos are my husband's. #birds #BirdsOfMastodon #dogs #DogsOfMastodon #Boise #Idaho #Alaska #Caturday

  1. The water is high enough at Lake Owyhee that the ring gate spillway, affectionately called a "Glory Hole" and rarely put to use, is overflowing with water. An oddly cool thing to see. #Oregon

A video shows a slightly submerged concrete ring spouting vapor like a whale as water above a dam flows into its deep vertical tube.

Happy #BatAppreciationDay! My favorite experience appreciating bats was at the Frio Bat Flight in Texas a few years ago. The evening departure of over 10 million Mexican free-tailed bats from their cave takes hours. Appreciative raptors hunt the bats before dark, grabbing them right out of the sky and eating them without landing.

Via Democracy Docket:

NEW: #Idaho Supreme Court upholds the state's ban on using student IDs to vote, dismissing a lawsuit alleging that the rule violates young voters’ right to equal protection and right to vote under the Idaho Constitution.

@GottaLaff Which, sadly, is one of the least worst things to happen in Idaho politics in the last week.

“Dairy farmers in the United States are raising their defenses to try to contain the spread of #BirdFlu: banning visitors, cutting down trees to discourage wild birds from landing, and disinfecting vehicles coming onto their land.”

@Eka_FOOF_A @GottaLaff I don't think that cutting down trees will discourage gulls, starlings, doves and blackbirds from concentrated feeding operations or small feedlots.

My sisters are my heroes, including the one that made this sign for a protest tonight. The Idaho “Freedom” Foundation is an extremely heinous and harmful group. #Idaho

I am get hammered with dozens of spam/scam phone calls every single evening, starting at about 5:30 pm. I never answer and then block the numbers, but don't know what else I can do. Is anyone else suffering the same?

IdahoLark,
@IdahoLark@syringa.social avatar

@thepoliticalcat I never answer if I don't know the caller. But holy hell, someone sure sold my number to some bad actors.

My sister and her daughter got chastised for wearing masks by the dude working the meat counter in #FredMeyer this morning. I can’t believe there are still halfwits threatened by masks. Meanwhile a friend is battling #Covid here.

This is nightmare I have when I fly. I am 6’3” and I try to get exit row but even newer planes do not have larger rows in exits now. I fly Friday in a regular economy seat between my wife and daughter and dreading that someone reclines and kills my legs.

@cwoodruff @thepoliticalcat One of my flying nightmares is reaching down to get something out of my handbag and when the jerk in front of me suddenly leans his seat back this time he succeeds at breaking my neck.

My husband and I just finished our fifth and final winter raptor survey for the season. Highlights were finding a big flock of Gray-crowned Rosy-Finches, seeing 30 pronghorn, and spying several Burrowing Owls staking out nest sites. #raptors #owls #birding #Idaho #CitizenScience

IdahoLark,
@IdahoLark@syringa.social avatar

@Saltssaltgirl Besides the usual (French fries, frozen foods, grilled cheese sammy, reheating pizza) there are yummy recipes out there for things like chicken parmesan, coconut shrimp , garlic mushrooms, broccoli bites, and fish that are easy to make. And I love to make roasted asparagus made in it.
