BRB, getting lost in film for the next 12 weeks.

Watching indie films outside is one of my favorite parts of the summer. Last night's opener was in a graveyard & the season includes screenings on warehouse rooftops, ferry piers, and parks across all five boroughs.

Beyond just the setting, part of why I live in #nyc is the chance to see movies that will never be picked up for distribution. Short films, weird animations, insanely-heavy topics; there is so much incredible art being made

That magical moment when a song immediately resonates and gets (pleasantly) stuck in your head for the next few days.

One of the things I hate about being a female manager is that it's not enough to just be good at my job.

I also have to present 100% of the time as warm but not flirty, open without oversharing, friendly but in an "authentic" way, professional but not cold, attractive but not sexy, and competent without being intimidating.

There is no way to win.

So unbelieveably blown by the track today. All power to the people; the truth cannot be silenced.

@lunaticatlarge thank you for letting me know! I changed the link because Twitter is being unreliable (a coincidence, I'm sure).

Hopefully this one works!

Countdown until we learn that Waymo is similar to those Amazon stores where the self-driving cars are actually controlled by offices full of people who are playing a variation of Mario Kart in order to get us to our destinations.

I've recently switched bows (recurve to compound) so I've been shooting like trash for a few weeks. Archery is great deprogramming for lingering perfectionism & fear of failure.

Trying to embrace not being perfect at something that brings me joy.

"That's when she found the tree,
the dark, crabbed branches
bearing up such speechless bounty,
she knew without being told
this was forbidden. It wasn't
a question of ownership—
who could lay claim to
such maddening perfection?

And there was no voice in her head,
no whispered intelligence lurking
in the leaves—just an ache that grew
until she knew she'd already lost everything
except desire, the red heft of it
warming her outstretched palm."

Do you ever get a line from a story stuck in your head? Something clicks and suddenly the dark recesses of your brain draw forth a flashing neon billboard of a particular line or phrase that you read at least a decade ago and have lost all contextual framework for.

Today's brain lava burped up this gem: "understand that your cat is a whore and can't help you."

(from Lorrie Moore's "Self Help," which has just moved to the top of my re-read pile)

the wto protests were a turning point for me as a college student, that's when i learned that the news media can lie, and that militarized police are the ones who overwhelmingly initiate fear and perpetrate the violence accredited to protestors on the evening news. i guess a new generation of college students is learning about this now, probably the most important thing they'll learn on their campuses in 4 years tbh

@seachanger The moment I keep remembering is being in downtown LA on a national day of action for Occupy.

I had my little brother with me, which was perfectly fine for the large, peaceful, and orderly march. It was less fine when the LAPD surrounded the plaza with a human wall of hundreds of cops in riot gear and started teargassing people.

Not a part of the big sister education process that I was expecting to take on.

I'm glad that at this point in my life, I've established that I am someone who responds to being totally overwhelmed by going to the woods.

Literally screw the city, organized society, my jobs, my family, all of it.

I just want trees & quiet & distance. I want to feel the primordial recognition that I was once prey. I want to surprise an animal because my steps are so silent. I want to disappear in the modern sense, if only for the briefest moment.

My husband and I have been a couple for a long time. Through ups and downs, sickness and health and times happy as well as sad.
Now we navigate being old.
Even through extreme circumstances, we manage to show our devotion to each other.
Our methods have changed over time for sure, but not the core desire to love and be loved.
My husband just did something for me that might seem small, but it isn't. The other day, when I went hiking through the redwoods, I wore a new pair of walking shoes thinking the trail was maintained. It turned out the trail was muddy, and I thought I ruined the shoes. They looked pretty bad. So I left them in the garage and added, cleaning them to my to-do list.
While I was working in the kitchen today, he quietly sat outside, in the shade, and made my shoes look like new again.
That's true love.
I am pretty lucky.
