Have you seen a Contributor License Agreement (CLA) that's made to a single commercial entity (so foundations or non-profits excluded) that does not reserve the right to sub-/dual-/re-license on their part unilaterally? (Where?)

Or: have there been legally binding restrictions on the licenses that they might choose?

(Please boost for reach.)

In more happy news, NASA has just updated their policy on releasing software to make it easier to release their software as open source.

This is really into the policy weeds, but it makes it easier to release scientific software, develop software openly, and contribute to existing open source projects.

Last week, I presented the work I did with prof. Kuldeep Meel and prof. Arunabha Sen at IJCAI 2023.

We showed the benefits of reducing a problem to a computationally harder problem (yes, you read that right!), by demonstrating how it allows us to solve much larger problem instances.

It was so much fun to finally share this work with so many fantastic researchers at IJCAI! Thank you to all organisers for making this conference possible. I'm also super grateful to the reviewers who gave us great feedback!

Please find our paper, slides, poster, a short video, and our open source tool, gismo, here: www.annalatour.nl/publication/2023-08-01-Solving-the-Identifying-Code-Set-Problem-with-Grouped-Independent-Support

Me, a young woman with long blonde hair wearing a pink blouse, standing in front of an academic poster, smilingly posing as if I am explaining it to someone. The poster is titled "Solving the Identifying Code Set Problem with Grouped Independent Support", and has a big pink block with white letters in the middle, which reads "by reducing to a computationally harder problem, we can exponentially decrease the encoding size, and solve much larger instances."

If my boss asks me

"OK, as a software company that relies on open source, we are willing to support open source more. What do you suggest how we should approach this?"

What would be some good articles I should read before answering?

(Boosts and direct advice is appreciated too.)

We are also having a town hall on Tuesday, April 2 at 2 pm ET to talk about it.

I recently read through this 20 year publication by @glynmoody and it was definitely a good one.

I am a fan of modern technological history, especially on topics that relate to the early PC (Altair 8800, #Apple I, II, #Macintosh, etc.), #UNIX, #Linux and the entire open source software. Moody’s Rebel Code did a wonderful job of capturing the early history of the #opensourcesoftware movement.

Current List Of All Open Source Software Used In ESRI Products

https://www.esri.com/en-us/legal/requirements/open-source-acknowledgements <-- link to list at ESRI site

This list shows an example of the power of open source across the GIS spectrum, into the largest spatial software commercial vendor, bringing value to us all
For instance, when running a raster GP tool in ArcGIS Pro v3.2, the backend might be GDAL algorithm - with an ESRI wrapper - working hard; there are ~1,500 specific line item acknowledgements for this piece of software alone…

file_path <- "data.csv"
if (file.exists(file_path)) {
print("The file exists!")
} else {
print("The file does not exist.")
}

In this example, we check if the file named "data.csv" exists. Depending on the outcome, it will print either "The file exists!" or "The file does not exist."
