Inner leaves of the succulent pillow - done!
there are two more layers of leaves to sew together, and then add a backing. As I add the layers and it gets more three-dimensional, the work gets more complicated!

Imagine a black tube, 10cm diameter, 30cm tall, carved with one of these drawings and you put a light (a candle or a led) inside so that the drawing glows in the dark.

Which one you’d like the most?

Back to the succulent pillow project - time to sew all the pieces together! I'm figuring it out as I go along, as this is my first time sewing crochet, and the pattern I'm using doesn't really have any guidance.

Before giving up for today, I took apart the sauna and shifted a bunch of rocks to expose the crack in the hot water pipe. It's going to be a pain in the ass to weld there, the crack is in a tight corner and of course on the bottom.

Access is limited, there's a wall on two sides and I'll have to bend myself in there. Maybe I can remove the wire mesh for better access, but probably I'll have to take out all the rocks then. Argh.

Close-up of the thinner pipe from before. There's a big crack where the pipe is making a 90 degree turn, on the inside of the elbow. Bright rust and water are visible.

What obligation do have to operate at the same scale as or even outperform their venture capital funded corporate counterparts? If a does not succeed in having a similar reach as major corporations with comparable features, should it be considered "low quality" or are there other standards of success worth considering?

@axwax@chaos.social avatar

@wjmaggos

How exactly do you define decentralised solutions though?

Aren't coops like and
@mirlo, or sites just that? (Admittedly without federation)

, , and solutions usually won't be able to compete with big businesses when it comes to price and/or convenience, just like your community supported farm can't compete with Aldi.

It's really down to you as consumer to decide what is more important to you, convenience or doing what's right.

I liked this old school #red #bicycle & the #DIY safety striping, front basket & milk crate cargo add-on.
At the event last night, I'd say about 1/3 of almost 200 audience had cycled to event - gauging from amount of folks I saw carrying bicycle helmets.

Eine Frage für die Holz-Heimwerker:

Ich habe einen winzigen Keller (4 m²) in dem ich absehbar öfter machen werde.

Ich suche daher einen Werkstattsauger/Absaugung mit folgenden Eigenschaften:

  • < 150€
  • Auffangvolumen >= 10L, aber so kompakt wie irgend möglich!
  • nicht zu laut
  • Staubbeutel
  • kein Muss: Gerätesteckdose

Hat jemand Empfehlungen oder Erfahrungen?

My dry suit recently sprung a small leak in the wrist seal. I decided to do my own wrist seal replacement, so I wrote up a blog post about it. This isn't a full tutorial of how to do it - I'll leave that to the pros. This is more meant as a tips and tricks/overview of the process to help others decide if they want to do it themselves.

I've put 2 cold water dives on the new seal and it works great!

#Petrocultures2024 reception was a success as far as I'm concerned

inquiline,
@inquiline@union.place avatar

Months ago, we had planned to hold the reception in the "park" on campus where students later put up their encampment, that administrators & police then removed. It would have felt awful to hold it there under these circumstances, so we moved to a state park a few miles away with oil extraction as backdrop for the recreational setting.

My heroic colleague bought snacks and beverages and and served them out of his trunk, which saved us probably $19,000 too.

Hate to say it, but online shopping beats brick and mortar simply because it’s easier to get what you want.

I went to a Sport Check just now, they don’t sell laceless running shoes.

I went to Best Buy just now, they don’t sell 60” inch TV—never mind a dumb (not smart) TV.

Once again, I go with Amazon simply because it has what I’m looking for.

For the past couple of weeks I've spent my evenings modding my Behringer RD-3.

It's a fun way to learn some basic #electronics

..and to get a cheaper Roland TB-303 ;)

Turned out pretty good and sounds even better!

Mods:

  • Lower cutoff
  • Hollow square
  • Filter overdrive deluxe
  • Rubber mod
  • Softer VCA attack
  • Higher resonance
  • PSU mod
  • Manual accent

I'll write a blog post about the process soon, but for now, here's an image

I’m on an energy saving kick.
So far this month between the hours of midnight and 8am we are averaging 1.2kWh per hour of use.
I can only account for a max of 400Wh/hr and even that is a high estimate.

No ac on. All computers shutdown.
The only thing running is about 200w of network gear, refrigerator and freezer. And some phone chargers.

Something is drawing power that shouldn’t be 🧐

After hours of calibrating the Mitre saw and almost losing my mind over it, it is done.

No wonder I struggled with this saw. The calibration was maxed out and I had to file the elongated holes in the fence longer to actually get it true. Plus, aligning the blade to the slot first was a real hassle. Eventually made a spacer with good result.

Then it checked out at 90° but not at 45° until I realized this red square had a problem too. You can probably spot it!

Macro light done.

Made a mount for it that hangs back and aside, so it can double as handle, the camera can stand up straight on it and the access door for the USB connector of the camera isn't blocked.

It took ages to figure out a position which enabled all of the above, but then that's why you make your own kit.

Works pretty well and happy with the result. Satisfying amount of salvaged parts, too.

Mirror selfie of the macro light installed on the red camera. My right hand grasps the camera as normal, the left hand the black case, which is now mounted vertically and off to the side of the camera, acting as second handle. The ring LED is installed on the lens and lit up brightly, partially reflecting in the mirror and back onto the lens.
A random tiny dead insect that happened to be readily laying on the window sill today. It's less than 2mm long, laying on its back and clasping its legs in death. It looks like a tiny fly.
