Look here, it's #NewMusic for you! Every week I cover 5+ new acts, listen to ~15 min worth of stuff, then tell you all about it so you can check out the ones that seem intriguing. This week we had a couple different flavors of #ambient and New Age, some #neoclassical (that also works as ambient 😅 ) and a really distinctive #rock track. Check them out!
DEAD CAN DANCE - IN THE KINGDOM OF THE BLIND THE ONE-EYED ARE KINGS
This powerful track from Dead Can Dance's 1988 album "The Serpent's Egg" explores themes of power and societal limitations. Its blend of ethereal vocals, medieval instrumentation, and driving percussion creates a uniquely captivating soundscape.
I post a lot about music, from #neoclassical and #Bowie to #doom and #BlackMetal. I also post a lot about books, mostly literary and translated fiction. I complain a lot about reading Proust.
I studied #Classics and #Latin but left academia 10 years ago. I (don't) miss it. One day I'll finish my book based on my thesis about Sulpicia, but it is not this day.
Since joining Mastodon, I've questioned what flavor of neurodivergent I am, and if it goes well with cheese.
Confession time: Does anyone else have a #playlist for the #music they love and another for the music they endure while grinding through work? 🎶 It's like having two secret lives. One filled with handpicked #symphonic#neoclassical dark wave #metal, #fantasy-themed folk, and the soothing sounds of #classical music... Meanwhile, the work grind vibes: insane #bass-boosted #nightcore, dirty brown noise, and the darkest depths of ugly black metal. 🤘 Anyone else leading a musical double life? 🎵
Now that I’m in DC, let me start a new photo thread 😛
I’ll spare you the photos of the obvious subjects, so let’s focus on some other ones that I think are still deserving. This one is the Treasury Department building.
"Fruit, Flowers, and Dead Birds," Wybrand Hendriks, c. 1780.
Henriks' work looks like the Dutch Golden Age, but he was much later...this is a nice example of Retro Art. He got his start painting wallpaper, interestingly enough.
The tumult of flowers and fruit here is a good image for the season, even with the dead birds. The plums make my mouth water...but I love plums.
A humourous oil painting of the love of #Mars and #Venus that was created when the artist was only 15 or 16 years old.
Mars ist struck by an arrow in his chest but it is a love arrow 😘
🏛️ Mars, Venus and #Vulcan, by John Singleton Copley. Oil on canvas, dated 1754 CE. Today in the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, USA.
It's the Day of Zeus / Jupiter's Day / #Thursday! ⚡
Painting of the theft of Fire: #Zeus and his eagle and his lover #Ganymedes are all asleep. Meanwhile, #Prometheus steals fire from the thunderbolt in Zeus' hand.
🏛️ The Theft of Fire by Christian Griepenkerl, dated 1878 CE.
"Athenian Meles, spurning the love of Timagoras, a resident foreigner, bade him ascend to the highest point of the rock and cast himself down. When Meles saw that Timagoras was dead, he suffered such remorse that he threw himself from the same rock and so died."
Pausanias, Description of Greece
