At the #library, I picked up the debut novel by Tommy Orange, an #Oakland-based Native writer.

I couldn’t put it down for 100 pages. It’s like it was written for me: Oakland streets, bikes, Radiohead, MF Doom, the Coliseum, BART, ethnic food, family stuff.

Check it out if you have the chance.

Ilan Ramon was the first #Israeli #astronaut, and also lost his life aboard Space Shuttle Columbia.

Miraculously, the diary he kept, containing his personal feelings as well as descriptions of the historic event he was a part of, somehow landed relatively intact in Texas after the disaster. It has been preserved and now is at the National #Library of #Israel where it is on extended loan.

You can read more about it and see some photos of the original texts here ~ https://blog.nli.org.il/en/ilan_ramon_diary/?_atscid=3_2269_240875485_10349097_0_Txetadfeaaswhup2wuu&utm_source=activetrail&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=%20English%20Newsletter%20-%2030.05.2024

It is #CompostingDay and we will all day celebrate this event.

The #ClimateChange gives us two options: deny it or accept the reality. We have chosen the latest.

If #climate anxiety is a thing for you, composting is a simple tool anyone can practice. A worm bin will do that job if you do not have a garden.

If you do not know how to compost there is one thing you can do, go to your local #library and grab all the books on #compost that you can find.

Please boost this message and help us inspire the #fediverse and #mastodon to be the change.

The best way to learn #composting for free is to go to your local public #library and check the #books they have on the subject.

What was the book that got your attention and made you want to compost? It will help those who want to start.

Not sure who needs to hear this today, but remember, your local public library benefits from being used! Usage statistics are how librarians argue for funding! By using this shared service more, you are making it BETTER for everyone else!

It's the glory of the commons, not the tragedy of the commons. Go to the library!!!

Which is better books or eBooks?

It doesn’t really depend.

The answer is less consumption and more sustained availability.

Sharing books.
Second hand bookshops.
Public libraries.
Ability to share eBooks once purchased.

This is the way to save the planet.

The cost of library e-books gets more insane every year. S&S wants $130 for the audiobook of the new Stephen King short story collection. . .for just two years, when it expires and our library has to buy another license. Nope!

Oh just fabulous. 🙄 AI-generated personality tests in job applications have arrived. Just helped a library guest apply for a job and the test was incomprehensible from beginning to end. Of course the local outfit had outsourced the application process to a third party company, who had outsourced the personalty/morality tests to yet ANOTHER company. This ordeal was for a job as a JANITOR.

#VancouverIsland #University said it will close its #Nanaimo campus #library from midnight - 9 a.m., another campus-access restriction that has been enacted after pro #Palestinian #students began an #encampment.

The only 24-hour library on Vancouver Island, the #VIU university library is steps away from the pro-Palestinian #protest encampment that was set up at the VIU quad early Tuesday morning.

The statement did not give a reason for the increased #restrictions.

Ugh! So is selling our data, not shocking after they were acquired... but there are alternatives that are below that public libraries can use!

For the targeted ad investigation, read https://www.theregister.com/2024/05/18/mystery_of_the_targeted_mobile_ads/

Fun fact

In elementary (primary) school during second grade (year 2) I checked out the book “How to run a railroad” the entire school year. I kept renewing it. The following year in third grade (year 3) I was banned from the library. My mother quickly resolved the issue and was pissed at the school for trying to ban a student for wanting to read.

Looking back I was clearly in the wrong, but I thank her anyway.
