I've said this before but I don't say it enough, so JOURNALISTS IN PARTICULAR, LISTEN UP:

If you are writing for Americans about and/or ?

USE FAHRENHEIT.

STOP USING C. STOP IT. USE F.

If you say "1.5 degrees celsius" most will hear one of two things:

A: 1.5°F, which they will further reduce to "nothing," because you can't really feel it. "A degree or two" means nothing.

B: ZERO, because they hear "small number I don't understand."

USE. FAHRENHEIT. AT. AMERICANS.

For real. "2 degrees (C)" means "basically nothing" but "4 degrees (F)" is "huh." It's something Americans know they can feel. Americans know the difference between 68F and 72F.

So I beg you:

Stop. Using. C. At. Americans.

Use. Fahrenheit.

Global temperatures briefly spike above key climate threshold, scientists warn of more extremes (www.pbs.org)

European researchers said Thursday that the the start of June saw global surface air temperatures rise 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels for the first time. That is the limit governments said they would try to limit global warming to at a 2015 summit in Paris.

We do understand the caused by fossil fuels - for four decades it’s been going as predicted.
But we don’t understand the surprise upward leap that is happening now.
And that worries me.

For those who might not know, following a week after the Russia-Ukraine wheat embargo, there are even bigger and ominous signs hinting at global food insecurity and the catastrophic agricultural crises coming our way.

India last week banned export on all non-basmati rice varieties.

I repeat: EXPORT BAN ON ALL non-basmati RICE varieties.

[Aside: export of basmati variety will continue, the demand for which is relatively small in India when compared to the nearly 15 major varieties of rice (it's home to at least a 1000 varieties) consumed by very large populations everyday(these are the ones which are now banned). Basmati is a "festive" and only occasionally consumed variety in India. It is largely exported to the richer nations, many of whom think it is the only variety of rice from India.]

Why is India banning rice now?
Answer: global warming.

What’s happening in India (and South Asia at large) should both terrify you and wake you up

The world is hotter than it’s been in 100,000 years, and it’s as if every alarm bell on Earth were ringing.

The warnings are echoing through the drenched mountains of Vermont, where two months of rain just fell in only two days. India and Japan were deluged by extreme flooding.

They’re shrilling from the scorching streets of Texas, Florida, Spain and China, with a severe heat wave also building in Phoenix and the Southwest in coming days.

Let’s get personal, shall we? I’ve been here a while now, and as I’m feeling quite comfortable at Mastodon, I’d like to share a bit more about myself beyond my passion for the climate and the environment.

To begin with, I’m a male, he/him, hetero, strongly supporting LGBTQ rights. I’m a baby boomer, born at 312 PPM 🌏, a United Statesian, although I lived in Europe (mostly Hungary) for several years, and traveled extensively for work before retiring in 2012. I’ve never been good at sustaining long-term romantic relationships, and I’ve finally settled into comfortable singlehood.

I like to say I’m made of contrasts.

For example, I’m rather funny and quite personable, but I don’t enjoy small talk and I hate parties. I currently live in the Bible Belt, but I’m an outspoken atheist. While I can easily fit into most social situations, I don’t feel comfortable around large groups and prefer being alone most of the time. I live near two huge military bases, but I detest the USA’s militaristic, troop-worshiping culture. I’m almost always cheerful, which masks my deeply felt existential nihilism. I’m a neat freak, but also rather lazy, preferring fun over work.

I’ll finish up with some hashtags to add flavor...

Here's some good news.

You often hear that so-and-so much #GlobalWarming is "baked in", that is, the world keeps on warming on the #GreenhouseGases already emitted.

"The best available evidence shows that, on the contrary, warming is likely to more or less stop once #CarbonDioxide (CO2) #emissions reach zero, meaning humans have the power to choose their #climate future."

A very good explainer:

Berkeley Earth's August 2023 Temperature Update

By far the warmest August since direct measurements began.

Warmest for both land & ocean.

Strengthening El Niño.

Nearly certain 2023 becomes the warmest year directly measured.

May see a +1.5 °C annual excess in 2023.

The #Earth’s #climate is perturbed by #human activites. One of the easiest things to do towards #sustainability is to cut air travels. Thus, 4 years ago, I cut my frequent flyer cards and decided to #StayGrounded, using only low-#carbon travel means such as #train.

Europe and the world must do better. ‘Flying in Europe up to 30 times cheaper than train, says Greenpeace.
