Last night, I received a task to investigate a massive #performance regression in certain parts of the game.
So today I began investigating and ran the latest build on my 4 testing machines. And indeed, the machines that had an #Intel#GPU only achieved ~10% of the FPS they usually had. "Oh no!" I thought, and spent all day profiling and disabling various engine features, but no matter what I did, the performance didn't improve much.
And then I found it. Those Intel machines still had #Mesa DLLs in their build directories from the last time I was investigating a graphics driver issue. Which means they have been using a #software implementation of #OpenGL all this time! :drgn_stare:
I removed the DLLs and the performance returned to normal.
And now I'm back to square one, unable to reproduce the performance issue. :drgn_weary_sob:
I've switched instances again, to be amongst the cuties at cutie.city :bugcat_love:, so here's my new #introduction! Looking forward to meeting everyone :cozy:.
I'm Zoey, a 30 something she/they #transfem#enby who's learning to love herself more each day. :blobhaj_melt:. I'm a software engineer working for one of those megacorps you've all heard of, but at least it's #OpenSource :bear_shrug:.
This is my updated #introduction post. I am 19 year old college student that makes video games in their free time. I mainly focus on making whimsical personal project games. I do a lot of furry stuff and games for the playdate console. Please feel free to follow ➕ or boost ♻️ if you are interested!
"If we accept precarity in the video game industry, or any other industry, as immutable or just a quirk of the 'culture,' we all lose. Game development does not have a culture of instability. It has a culture of exploitation."
#ProjectManagement in #GameDevelopment is slightly different. We don't have a Scrum Master we have a SCUMM master. Someone that is really good at playing Day Of The Tentacle.
I've uploaded some videos of my personal gamedev work from the past 2 years. I'm still looking for work, so this is my way of trying to put myself out there.
In my professional work I've mainly done technical animation, but I've touched pretty much every aspect of Unreal Engine development.
I spent some time today figuring out my freelance development services page on my KoFi. I tried my best to make my services comparable to what is available on Fiverr.
I don't really expect anyone to jump on purchasing a slot right away, but I would greatly appreciate anyone who is willing to look through my page, details, limitations, Terms of Service, or all the above to see what they think of my services!
So far I'm offering Godot Game Development and Godot Custom Tooling. Where the former is for full games from zero, and Tooling is creating a collection of independent scripts and scene files that can easily integrated into your Godot project.
I'm thinking of hosting a new #Mastodon and/or #Lemmy instance centered primarily around #sustainable#gamedevelopment, but I'm wondering if there would be enough interest for it as it's a fairly niche topic. 🤔
I also don't know how much storage I should dedicate to it to start things out. Would 100 gigs be enough for starters?
Other than that, if you guys have any tips on running an instance, please share with me! 💚
Video game companies laid off more than 11,000 people last year and in 2024 so far, a further 8,100 have been laid off. Yet 2023 was a good year for many games businesses in financial terms. GameSpot's Phil Hornshaw dives into what's going on, and how the industry needs to change.
I'm not sure if it will pan out this way, but it feels like the #steamdeck is one of the most important devices of late for #pcgaming and #linuxgaming when you think about the AAA #gamedevelopment process.
So historically it's easier to develop for #consoles as you have a common spec to develop against so you know if it's going to run well. The deck easily could become the PCs common spec, giving a single lowest denominator that also can be used to verify #linux compatibility as well.
Quick update! I released a new version of the bevy_third_person_camera crate that adds support for the latest version of Bevy, 0.12. Check it out if you haven't already! Crates.io
