Replacing an APU on a conventional jetliner with a #hydrogen fuel cell isn’t as glamorous as developing a zero-emissions #aircraft, but this incremental step could nevertheless be an important one in the broader journey toward #sustainable #aviation. For The Air Current, I spoke with H3 Dynamics CEO Taras Wankewycz about the work his company is doing with #Airbus to demonstrate an APU replacement on an #A330: https://theaircurrent.com/technology/airbus-hydrogen-apu-replacement-tests-aim-to-build-a-bridge-for-future-propulsion/

A dear friend of mine, an #architecture student actively interested in #solarpunk and #sustainable #infrastructure is currently visiting #Berlin .

Is there anything you could recommend for him to see, any place to visit, people to meet? Do you know anyone from #freifunk who could show him how the network works?

He might not be into software or hardware enough to appreciate cBase, he is more interested in city scale transport systems, urban planning and so on.

Drastic times, plastic measures

"Wouldn’t it be nice to celebrate with the first-ever global treaty to curb the world’s mounting plastic pollution problem?

That’s not a completely unrealistic outcome. Indeed, since its inception in 1970, Earth Day has grown into an international movement with the potential to seriously influence policy. This year’s theme is Planet vs. Plastics, and global leaders will convene in Canada later in the week to lay plans for what could be the most significant environmental deal since the 2015 Paris Agreement..."

Global plastic treaty talks are happening. What do stakeholders want? By Valerie Volcovici, April 22, 2024

Is there anything more than a willow (or other natural fiber) basket? I use the for , plant supports, living fences, , kindling, garden terraces and so much more. Cutting it makes it grow vigorously. It’s grows wild in the ditch or creek and in cultivation in the field. It composts! I keep discovering new uses every day.

#SelfDelivery 🤔

As alternative to #Dogfooding that many feel has negative connotation.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eating_your_own_dog_food

Not liking other alternatives, such as "Icecreaming" (too vague), "Drink your own champaign" (too posh), and "Eat the food you cook" (too long).

A definition may be:

> Self Delivery is a continual improvement method whereby the creator of a solution is also a client that uses it, gaining insight in how the solution conforms to stated needs, that are fed back into the design proces.

In yet another link to The Photographer's Gallery, I found this project "The Image at the End of the World" showing a great diagram (2021) of "Less is more" #sustainable technologies.

https://thephotographersgallery.org.uk/image-end-world

The project focuses on finding alternatives that help bring down the carbon footprint of our networked environment. Diagram is a great way to visualise relationships to #Solarpunk #PermaComputing #MeshNetwork and connect to various communities and projects that exist.

To all the #webdev folks using #php in their stack. Did you know that using count($myArr) in your for loops' check uses almost twice as much energy than saving this value to a variable and using that one?

On my laptop, a for-loop used 0.79 Watts with a pre-calculated count(), and 1.51 Watts when calling the function in the loop's check.

You can measure it yourself with the tool I've written this weekend: https://github.com/szogyenyid/joulenne

Some recent drystone work. A complete strip out and rebuild of this garden retaining wall which failed after only 30 years due to traced stone. All stone reused and we brought in some local fieldstone too.

Super sustainable, beautiful, lasts for generations. What's not to like?

A run down drystone wall in front of a house, there are stones lying on the ground around it and a red bucket full of stone too.

This year’s winning projects by Federico Gloriani (AR) and Guely Morató Loredo (BO) use modern media technologies to address the ecological (im)balance and the use of raw materials in Latin America. The common link: a reflection on #sustainable alternatives.
