'In a bid to reduce global electronic waste, Fairphone has created a smartphone that owners can repair themselves. What makes its technology so sustainable?'
But because they're repairable, modular, source some (not all) materials ethically, and will roll out software updates for longer than most their competitors they're a hell of a lot better than most of the blatantly ecocidal alternatives.
A revealing article on the headwinds facing the transition to #sustainable#green-energy.
From the article:
#Wind and #solar stocks are declining due to higher costs of raw materials and slow supply response.
#EV chargers and copper mining, critical for the energy transition, face demand uncertainties and reluctance in investment, and
Despite government subsidies, #renewable energy sectors struggle with high costs and interest rates, indicating a slower and more expensive transition than anticipated.
This is the problem with entrusting matters of such dire importance to #capitalism -- especially in an age of resource scarcity. As I say in my pinned toot:
Capitalism is little more than an ideological hangover produced from a time long past when low hanging fruit was everywhere for the taking and people thought it would never disappear.
That quote has deeper context than most suspect. I penned it years ago shortly out of law school after taking a Wildlife Law class from the, now deceased, Professor Dale Goble. He literally wrote the book on the #EndangeredSpecies Act. There he introduced me to the reason species have, historically, been driven to #extinction -- new technology + capitalist opportunism:
Gun powder killed the mega-predators. Whales? Spear gun. Passenger pigeon? Net guns. I could go on. But then we invented the petroleum economy, and in the opportunistic race for economic growth the decline has quickened by means of the collateral damage caused by #habitat degradation. Which, brings me to my point ---
The ideology that is capitalism was built around gluts. It cannot exist without low hanging fruit to fuel the #consumption#orgy necessary to get past the bottleneck of widespread consumer adoption. We are seeing the problem in stark outline today. Without #monopoly in the resource extraction sector, generating the necessary momentum to survive the capitalist "valley of death" is nearly impossible.
I conclude, there must first be an ideological transition away from the hangover that is capitalism, if we ever want to transition sustainable green-energy. The fruit is gone, folks. If we ever want it back, capitalism won’t take us there #ClimateCrisis#climate#environment#ecosocialism#economy#SteadyStateEconomy
“Our job is not to decide the future, but to leave the future as many options as possible. The most #sustainable society is the one which passes forward the best possibilities to future generations. Being a good ancestor means leaving open doors to a wider number of good futures.”

Put another way, if #allPhonesAreBad, and they are, we welcome anything that can disrupt.
Its not just the lack of fully FOSS firmwares for the #WiFi/modem/radio either. We have long decried the ills of video #consumption and how its not really longterm #sustainable in its current format. Something like this solves that.
Then, there is the #screenObsession. Again something like this very much solves that. :)
"The environmental #footprint of social media #hosting": fascinating and absolutely read-worthy thoughts into #sustainable social networking, both environmentally and socially.
I've been absent for days, and I'm sorry for that. Life has been happening at warp speed - something that always happens on a #farm and when raising kids.
I'll try to take the next few days to share about everything that's been going on. In the meantime, enjoy this glimpse of my #paradise.
I have often had my #Reebok sneakers break at the heel just when they were most comfortable and I had to buy new ones. Since that's not necessarily #sustainable, I tried to repair them this time .... Worked out well :)
The shoe glue and heel pads/adjustable shoe pads were less than 5€. It takes a while to glue the new heel pad depending on how many screw or spring clamps you use in parallel. #sustainability#frugal
I'll need a replacement for my reliable #xperia xz1 compact sooner or later. Unfortunately, there are no #android phones of that size on the market. Moreover, I would like to buy something more #sustainable and seize the opportunity to #degoogle my phone.
What with #StormBabet and the general cloudy weather, today's the first day of the year where we're operating on-grid as opposed to our solar/battery. Not bad going, but I'm hoping for a good spell of sun today to charge us back up.
Made this scarf in about two days this week. The yarn is a mixture of several recycled materials: cotton, polyester and wool. Which the label says is all reclaimed from clothes.
Again the colours kinda look a bit crappy tbh. Purple and white?
I want to make #trans or #bi or even rainbow coloured ones to sellon line soon. hopefully soon.
The Annular Solar Eclipse this morning was cool to watch here in Tucson, AZ USA, but it did reduce our production of electricity from our solar panels! Note the peak of the Eclipse at 9:30am MST is perfectly shown by the dip to 828 Watts.
Plantbased dog diets would reduce GHGs (greenhouse gases) by amounts greater than all GHG emissions from South Africa or the UK.
Climate change, biodiversity loss and environmental degradation are the key issues for our generation and the ones that will follow us. This issue is key to addressing one of the major known causes, which is ANIMAL AGRICULTURE (dairy, egg and flesh farming)
What we do here on the farm is a direct result of years of study and contemplation. #Sustainable#agriculture certainly includes methods and practical strategies, but at its heart, it's philosophy in action.
Michael pulled these books out with the idea of making a suggested reading list for our volunteer. What would you add?
There is one sure fire way for us all to reduce the climate risk, and it's simple... but can you do it?
Stop consuming. EVERY TIME you go to buy ANYTHING, ask the question Do I NEED it? Reducing your consumption by half will reduce emissions, and the economy will move on to something else. If we each make the right choices, that something else will favour sustainability.
Climate change is an immediate threat to the majority of the world's population.
We need a local, regional, state, national, and international "moon shot" type of concentration of effort using available resources while developing and advancing new science and technologies to counteract the damage humans have caused.
Without this type of all-out, universal cooperation, human civilization, and perhaps humanity itself, are in imminent danger of extinction.
These blooms are likely caused by #ClimateChange, and this business may soon be another Everything, Everywhere, All at Once option for #sustainable#HomeBuilding.
