Is the new ? Or the new or the new ?

Pushing products on people that do not want them is not a good thing.

Luckily the EU has made it possible to remove Edge and Onedrive. I hope they will add Copilot soon.

IMHO there should be a clear line between what is on the computer and what is on the cloud, unless I opt-in otherwise for things like backup.

Similarly there should be a clear line when it comes to . It must be clear when my data is local and when it is used for AI. What I do locally on my computer should not feed AI.

"It’s worth noting that #Firefox is the only mainstream browser built on an independent, #opensource browser engine whose roots don’t go back to Apple’s #WebKit engine. Google based its Blink engine on WebKit, and Blink powers both #Chrome and #Chromium, the open-source browser upon which most other modern browsers are built, including #Opera, #Brave, and Microsoft #Edge."

    Tja. 🤷‍♂️

I hope #Microsoft force all their #Edge browser staff to use all the stupid productivity hacks they introduce. "Hey, you opened up a website, so I'll consume a chunk of the browser window to show you the {Email | Teams chat} that you launched the browser from, even though you've still got it in another window."

I hope they have to use it every minute of every day and it slowly drives them up the wall.

    And voilà, my own #Vivaldi.

I took some stuff from #Arc (like the noise texture, the border around the browser and some shortcuts like ⌘+T which now opens a Command modal that allows me to either open a new tab or search the web but also access to some shortcuts or settings)

I also took from #Edge (the sidebar tabs that grow on hover)

Huge thanks to the VivalArc Project that made 90% of the job. Kudos to https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/442315 for the solution for bigger favicons (wouldn’t have think this one would be the most difficult one tbh*) and to https://forum.vivaldi.net/post/637324 for the growing on hover.

I’ve made several CSS tweaks to match by own goals but there it is, the perfect browser!

Same page but this time the full address bar is shown (via a keyboard shortcut)
same as before but this time the left tabs bar is hovered and tabs are larger so they show their name
address bar is gone, but a modal is open in the middle of the screen, and offers different actions based on my input "bdx.town"

I've finally done it. I've uninstalled #Microsoft #Edge from all my devices.

My browser setup will now be #Vivaldi as my main, #DuckDuckGo as my amnesiac and academic and #Safari (on iOS) as my main mobile, and Vivaldi on #iOS as a companion to the desktop version.

I've installed some PWAs as windows, but have shifted most to Vivaldi's web panels, this has actually cleaned up my #WindowsTaskbar!

What is a choice screen? If you are in Europe, you are about to find out. On your phone.

It is nice that you will be given a choice. Hopefully the choice will be presented in a way that allows you to make an educated choice as well.

I’m not sure who’s to blame in the #EU for giving up to the lobbying efforts of #Apple and #Microsoft (I can’t think of anything short of public official corruption behind the last minute reversal of the #DMA definition of “gatekeeper” for the two most valuable companies in the world), but these are some consequences of this decision:

    1. If Apple isn’t labelled as a gatekeeper when it comes to #iMessage (an app used by 1.3B people), then they won’t have to comply and open up their walled garden to 3rd-party clients, while, for example, Messenger and WhatsApp will have to.
    2. If Microsoft isn’t labelled as a gatekeeper when it comes to #Edge (a piece of software installed as the default browser on an OS used by at least 1.5B people), then they’ll be free to keep rewriting https:// URLs as microsoft-edge:https:// just for the sake of intercepting everything and breaking compatibility, they’ll no longer have to provide browser selection pop-ups on fresh Windows installations, and they can keep opening all the web views and PWA on Windows devices in their own browser without providing alternatives - while, for example, Chrome and Safari will have to comply.

Shame on the EU for bending to them. Shame on these companies. Shame on their filthy lobbying efforts. Shame on everybody who uses their products.

The DMA and the “gatekeeper” definition was supposed to be the proof that these companies are now run by responsible adults. Being a “gatekeeper” is the acknowledgment that you are running platforms used by billions, and with great power comes great responsibility - towards society, towards the rules of the open market, towards your own competitors.

My employer might be included on the list soon as well, and I’m more than happy to comply. Large tech companies like ours have enjoyed lavish profits and outrageous market shares and ignored anti-competition laws for too long: now it’s time to prove that we’re all grown ups who want to play by the rules.

Instead, Apple and Microsoft have unleashed their overpaid legal counsels and lobbying crews, who have engaged in a pathetic dance to gaslight Brussels officials, and force them to say that one of the largest messaging platforms and one of the most used browser in the world, run by the two companies with the highest evaluation in the world, for some reason are not expected to play by the rules written for everyone else.

Shame on them, and shame on the childish selfish sociopaths who run them.

"Following a thorough assessment of all arguments, taking into account input by relevant stakeholders, and after hearing the Digital Markets Advisory Committee, the Commission found that iMessage, Bing, Edge and Microsoft Advertising do not qualify as gatekeeper services."

    If #Microsoft #Edge and #Apple #iMessage don't classify as 'gatekeeper', who does?

Today I discovered that Windows launches in the background at startup by default. If you use a different browser like or , disable Edge in "Settings > Apps > Startup" and "Settings > Privacy > Background apps" to speed Windows startup and improve performance in general, especially on old or low end PCs.

TIme for the usual end-of-the-week #Linux and #OpenSource News video!

In this one, we have #Microsoft doubling down on errors, with #VSCode dropping #Ubuntu 18.04 without any warning (which is a problem, because auto updates are a very common thing), and #Edge grabbing browsing data from #Chrome without asking for consent.

We also have #Fedora 40 KDE going back a bit on their removal of X11, and some unintended consequences of #RedHat licensing changes:

Turn it off. Why is it on by default.

Further why does it always open with another browsers tabs open?

Is Microsoft really that desperate to get people to use Edge? 🤔 Todays MS reward members newsletter is offering:

My recommendation: Get instead. Or get the promo and use Firefox + DuckDuckGo + uBlock Origin anyway.
