A few brave Singaporeans unfurled this banner in front of the iconic Marina Bay Sands, in a country where any public protest is illegal without prior approval and approved protests are only allowed at one park (and the authorities already said all registered protest applications relating to Gaza will be denied)
If they were foreigners they would almost certainly be deported. As citizens they’ll definitely see some legal action
One of the storiest stories I’ve ever heard: when Laos was being bombed into oblivion during the Vietnam war, an Aussie photojournalist sought asylum for his Laotian girlfriend in Thailand by.. scuba diving with her from Laos. They were sharing a breath at a time in the Mekong until they got to Thailand. Then he was put in a Thai prison (the prime minister pardoned him).
Today their child is a leading Thai actor, and a movie was made of them called ‘Love is Forever’ #TootSea
When I was growing up I was a devout student of southeast Asian colonial and post-colonial history but my studies largely focused on the British empire. I am now spending my free time reading about the Dutch.
I'm Agas Ramirez, host of the #HERstory#SoutheastAsia#Podcast. I share women's history from the region, like the stories of Supayalat of #Myanmar , the Trung Sisters of #Vietnam , Prinsesa Urduja of the #Philippines , & Emiria Sunassa of #Indonesia . My latest series is on the #Manila Carnival (1908-1939).
Follow me for all things Southeast Asia! Looking forward to reblogging your posts. #TootSEA
Feminist org in Singapore is looking for volunteers who can speak and transcribe Vietnamese.
They’re doing a study on coercive control. Singapore has a large trans-national marriage rate, largely between citizen men and non-citizen wives from countries like Vietnam.
For example, the village of Atar in Sumatra, Indonesia has many migrants who move to Jakarta and other big cities to own or work in photocopy shops. As a result, there is a giant statue of a photocopy machine in the village
Hi there, I am looking to follow personal #blogs written by #SouthEastAsians, other #Asians, #Africans. Basically not Western. Nothing wrong with the West just that I have a huge RSS feed full of US, UK blogs. I want to diversify my feed.
Apparently, Malaysians like to #blog about 3 things: Food, politics & money 😂
I prefer genuinely personal blogs that are slice of life stuff. If you know of any please recommend to me! 🙏
The Hainanese in Singapore and Malaysia were among the last S. Chinese groups to leave China for Southeast Asia, so most of the ‘best jobs’ were already taken up by other groups. Many of them went into the food biz, and worked as chefs in colonial times. As a result, Hainanese takes on colonial era British food has evolved into its own thing, and this spot in Singapore is one such place to experience it
One of the things I’m hoping to bring to my publicsectorai.tech work is to also include perspectives outside N America and Europe. With my immigrant background and knowledge of other languages, I think that will be useful.
This is more a ‘fun’ thing: in Malaysia, an ad for Eid that is pretty meta. They made an ‘A.I. dilfitri’ ad (aidilfitri = Eid) and actually examines some interesting questions on bias in genAI
So people love or hate durians, but I think most people haven't been introduced to durians properly. There's many different types, with different textures / flavors, even smell. I don't love durian the way people from home do, but I can appreciate an excellent one from time to time. My favorite type is 'Red Prawn'. You can't get it outside of Malaysia/ SG. Many growers have farm to table cafes for durians and it's great & they even run durian classes

In #Singapore, very loud #roosters, strategically dispersed across the island and stationed on trees outside apartment windows, are tasked with a single mission — To ensure that locals get up bright and early every morning so they can lead #productive lives.
Mina Setra remembers a time before oil palm plantations changed the landscape of her childhood home. Setra, an Indigenous Dayak Pompakng, grew up when forests surrounded her village in the Indonesian province of West Kalimantan on the island of Borneo. Setra and her brother would spend their days canoeing on a nearby river, she...
Once upon a time in Hanoi, my family and I got lost trying to find a restaurant where we could have lunch. The narrow backstreets led us to this ethereal-looking building and to a group of artists who generously let me take their photos.
Indonesia’ s week-long Eid al-Fitr holiday officially begins. In the Middle East and other parts of the world, marking the end of Ramadan is the minor Eid but in Southeast Asia this is the major Eid, the other being the sacrificial Eid al-Adha.
Malaysia and Singapore only allocate 1-2 days of holiday but Indonesia’s customary homecoming practice means anything less than 5 days won’t ever be sufficient. It’s like our Thanksgiving but for 7-9 days depending on when it falls during the week.
Any effort to contact businesses during this time will be futile unless you’ve already had prior appointment and even then it might be canceled 😂😂😂.
Jakarta’s residents have slowly left the city for the holidays starting last Friday and the holiday exodus typically accelerates until the day before Eid until around half the city is left, leaving it pleasant for everyone else to drive, take buses, go to parks, malls, and other local destinations. Outbound traffic is downright terrible already.
This time next week the inbound traffic to major cities and population centres will be pretty severe as residents return. Often this also means a spike in city population with new people coming looking for work.
Bringing Chinese pork & cabbage soup plus grass jelly with chia seeds(raw honey added) to Auntie. She's been transferred back to Jubilee & in negative pressure isolation room because her latent TB went active while in hospital. Feeling some bad deja vu because that happened to Dad 2 years ago & he was in hospital for over 3 months.
I'm stressed out/very worried again.
Heading to hospital now.
Ventilator will be put back on if her breathing doesn't improve soon.
@SRDas Thanks. I found out after Dad's experience that many South East Asian diaspora here often have latent TB become active in hospital after severe first time covid infections. It is never reported in the news & public - especially #SouthEastAsian diaspora folks, should know this.
Africa’s linguistic diversity goes largely unnoticed in research on multilingualism (theconversation.com)
sharing it here because it mentioned SEA as another under-studied multilingual region, and we share the same issues:...
