Photo is a bettong that has been caught by researchers. The good news is their population has maybe tripled over the last few years in Australia's largest nature preserve that is free of introduced predators - it has 45km (28mi) of 1.8m (just under 6') tall fencing to keep it that way. Just 3 years ago they were reintroduced to...
"Bishop’s story, from birth to presumed death, shows the extreme danger facing right #whales, which could be #extinct in three decades if they continue to disappear at the present rate.
"“As we watch this #species go #extinct one by one, the solution sits idle in the hands of the administration”...
this year, a dead female turned up off #Virginia with a dislocated spine, a calf was discovered in #Georgia with head lacerations, & a young female was found — again in Georgia — with a fractured skull. All the injuries are consistent with vessel strikes.
Taxonomists have a long history of cataloging everything they could find. Worldwide expeditions, museums and universities have all committed to classifying specimens. Yet no single, unified list of all the species on Earth exists. Some scientists want to change that. Popular Science explains. https://flip.it/ram4oV #Science#Animals#Species#Taxonomy#Earth
Wow! 200,000 to 300,000 years ago #Orcas now living and hunting in and relatively near the #PacificNorthwest of the #US and southwest #Canada coast diverged into different #species, #DNA analysis now reveals.

New Lizard Species Named After IRON MAIDEN's BRUCE DICKINSON
According to ReptilesMagazine.com, a new lizard species has been named after IRON MAIDEN singer Bruce Dickinson. Named Enyalioides dickinsoni, the lizard was found in the Cordillera de Colán mountain range 460 miles north of Lima, Peru. Three localities are known to be home to this lizard species. i...
A new United Nations report says 44% of the world’s migratory species are in decline due to hunting, pollution, and climate change. Birds, whales, turtles and other animals who move along with changing seasons are particularly vulnerable to environmental destruction because habitat loss can pose an existential threat at any point in their journey. Read more about the report from the Associated Press.
my favourite #goodNews story of the week cos it involves #otters :awesome: :blobheartraccoon:
"A great example of how saving one #species can have a domino effect on the restoration of a whole #ecosystem. In California’s Monterey Bay, efforts to bolster sea otter populations are saving local salt marshes because the otters feast on the burrowing crabs that cause erosion. The sea otters have consumed enough of the crabs to slow the #erosion almost to a halt."
On a more serious front, the #story has produced new sightings from across #England. If you think you have seen one, do get in contact with me. We are already changing the distribution #map and chronology of this #species. #CitizenScience#Ecology#ClimateChange
"For decades, beavers were considered pests – trapped & shot on sight. Now the attitude towards nature's best engineers is changing, & farmers are working to bring them back. #Beavers are vital to #ecosystems, as their dam building habits spread water through parched landscapes. This can not only help to regulate the flow of water, it provides another important service – keeping fires under control. Beavers are nature's firefighters.
In northern New Mexico, Darr has seen farmers "drastically" change their perception of beavers. "They were pretty hesitant, but they saw first-hand how the beavers provided sustained, reliable #water sources throughout the year, even during the hot dry summer we had. To see it is to believe it. We just have to show people what beavers can do for other wildlife, & humans." #permaculture#climate#drought#floodhttps://www.bbc.com/future/article/20240111-the-us-is-bringing-back-beavers-because-theyre-natures-best-firefighters
Calling on any myriapodologists out there. Is this Scutigera coleoptrata (House #Centipede)? Photographed last night in my downstairs bathroom. I’m aware they are rare in the UK but sightings are on the rise. Body length approx. 25mm. I need #expert#identification before getting too excited (I’m already excited!). I can’t find any prior record of the #species in #Nottinghamshire. Is this a #First#Sighting? Embarassingly the photo reveals I need to dust more!
A Tearful Farewell to the 21 Species We Declared #Extinct in 2023
“I thought about how I would grieve for a friend.”
Many of these #species had not been seen in decades. But the announcement was a sobering reminder that the #ClimateCrisis crisis and #habitat#destruction are accelerating an #extinction crisis that threatens 2 million species
“It’s a horrible tragedy,” said the ecologist and author Carl Safina. “And I think it is a breach of our #moral guardrails.”
"De-extinction promises not a true reversal of time but a selective one. It is the epitome of the incorrigible human belief that, with enough money, we can find an escape clause from the destruction we've wrought on the planet."
