A bettong bewildered by bagging

Photo is a bettong that has been caught by researchers. The good news is their population has maybe tripled over the last few years in Australia's largest nature preserve that is free of introduced predators - it has 45km (28mi) of 1.8m (just under 6') tall fencing to keep it that way. Just 3 years ago they were reintroduced to...

All #Orcas Are Classified as a Single Species. Should They Be?
Scientists suggest two #killerwhale populations off #Pacific Coast of #UnitedStates and #Canada are actually so different from each other — and from other orcas — that they should be considered separate #species. They have different diets: resident orcas eat fish, while igg’s orcas hunt marine mammals (seals, sea lions); and numerous behavioral, physical and genetic differences.

Taxonomists have a long history of cataloging everything they could find. Worldwide expeditions, museums and universities have all committed to classifying specimens. Yet no single, unified list of all the species on Earth exists. Some scientists want to change that. Popular Science explains. https://flip.it/ram4oV

A new United Nations report says 44% of the world’s migratory species are in decline due to hunting, pollution, and climate change. Birds, whales, turtles and other animals who move along with changing seasons are particularly vulnerable to environmental destruction because habitat loss can pose an existential threat at any point in their journey. Read more about the report from the Associated Press.

my favourite #goodNews story of the week cos it involves #otters :awesome: :blobheartraccoon:

"A great example of how saving one #species can have a domino effect on the restoration of a whole #ecosystem. In California’s Monterey Bay, efforts to bolster sea otter populations are saving local salt marshes because the otters feast on the burrowing crabs that cause erosion. The sea otters have consumed enough of the crabs to slow the #erosion almost to a halt."

"For decades, beavers were considered pests – trapped & shot on sight. Now the attitude towards nature's best engineers is changing, & farmers are working to bring them back.
are vital to , as their dam building habits spread water through parched landscapes. This can not only help to regulate the flow of water, it provides another important service – keeping fires under control. Beavers are nature's firefighters.
In northern New Mexico, Darr has seen farmers "drastically" change their perception of beavers. "They were pretty hesitant, but they saw first-hand how the beavers provided sustained, reliable sources throughout the year, even during the hot dry summer we had. To see it is to believe it. We just have to show people what beavers can do for other wildlife, & humans."

Calling on any myriapodologists out there. Is this Scutigera coleoptrata (House #Centipede)? Photographed last night in my downstairs bathroom. I’m aware they are rare in the UK but sightings are on the rise. Body length approx. 25mm. I need #expert #identification before getting too excited (I’m already excited!). I can’t find any prior record of the #species in #Nottinghamshire. Is this a #First #Sighting? Embarassingly the photo reveals I need to dust more!
