A very Alaskan moment: freaking out at the grocery and buying 10x more than planned because produce actually came in this week! #Alaska#alaskalife#produce
Larry’s Produce / Farm of Fairfield, CA: best place for fresh, well priced, & hard to find #produce. Farmer’s markets here are so $$. I will be sad when they are closed for the season, long wait until June/July. In the #SFBA (San Francisco Bay Area) finding veggies such as okra that are actually fresh and crisp every single week is a rarity. Last month they had bushels of fresh garbanzo! Yesterday Tinda (Indian Apple Gourd)! I’ve fully been taking advantage of the bounty every week.
I couldn't leave my #orchard theme behind without posting a picture of some of our #produce. However, I couldn't decide whether to go with #apples or #pears, so I've ended up with both.
On the left, we have Russet apples, and those are Conference pears on the right.
'Russeting' is the "partial or complete coverage of a fruit with rough patches of greenish-brown to yellowish-brown colour". Both these varieties exhibit 'russeting'.
Another #garden#produce bag is finished! Here’s a #sewing write up if you’re a very basic sewist and would like to make your own. It’s a rectangular tote bag with optional outside pockets. You’ll need at least one large rectangle of sturdy cloth and about five yards of webbing, strapping, or cloth strips for the handles. For strength, this one has a bottom reinforcement, plus two pockets: more cloth, the same or different fabric.
Ok, let’s get started! I’m using scraps, so the first thing I did was cut out and square up my bottom and side pocket pieces. Then I used those dimensions (incorrectly, im pushing changes straight to prod) to draw up a diagram for the rest of the bag.
My fabrics today are a non stretch softshell and a really thick, plasticky piece of Sunbrella outdoor fabric. Any fabrics will work, but try to make them match - sewing a light stretchy pocket to a stable piece of canvas will make you cry, ok? Keep them similar.
Cut out some nice rectangles for the pockets and bottom. I made big pockets for pruners and cell phones. The mistake in my plan is that the bottom reinforcement width is more like 10”, not 4”, but that’ll become clear.
On to part 2!
