Are #Mastodon & #Pleroma the only #fedi/ #ActivityPub implementations that support creating #polls? #askFedi

Does any #Fediverse software allow someone to restrict who can @ mention them? Or is that just generally fair game? If always allowed, is that a vector for pile-on-style harassment?

What did I say when you were raking mastodon.social all over the coals about a spam wave.

gme,

@hankg @szbalint I wish as an admin that I could modify the signup form on #Pleroma/ #Akkoma to insert a small amount of HTML code that either embedded a Google Form/ Survey (or Microsoft, whatever) and asked users signing up one question (in addition to their username/ email so you can tie the response back):

Why do you want an account here?

That alone I think will cut down on 99.9% of the SPAM/ bot registrations.

Of all the instances on the fediverse, why do you want to be here?**

I agree with @jwildeboer about how DMs shouldn't be sent unless a relationship of trust (perhaps by mutual follows) gets established first.

However, maybe it's time to retire DMs -- at least as implemented on Mastodon.

Even with recent UI changes, they're easy to confuse for regular messages -- making it all too easy to make a faux pas with visibility settings.

Now some server software (like #Calckey and #Pleroma) have a chat system with a UI that makes it clear that the discussion is not to be confused with status updates. Moreover, these are not Mastodon-style DMs either, but something separate.

I personally prefer chat over DMs. And while I think there's lots of room to improve them, chats are an upgraded user experience over DMs.

Based on a discussion that I've had with @Gargron, I don't think he likes DMs either. I remember him talking about building a separate chat system. That's probably not a bad idea.

If you’re trying to fight DM spam and set mastodon.social as followers-only, we discovered that that doesn’t work. It downgrades privacy setting from Public/Unlisted to Followers-Only, but doesn’t affect DMs.

See this response from FloatingGhost about how to configure mrf_rejectnonpublic rule instead.

I haven't been as active today as typical. This is in part because my account impacts Calckey's performance quite a bit.

One of the quirks of the Fediverse is that success often comes with a performance hit.

@atomicpoet I agree! Ironically, it seems as if each #Fediverse platform has its own distinct culture.

#Mastodon is mostly serious conversations.

#Misskey is about celebrating life, mostly in Japanese.

#Calckey is about celebrating life, mostly in English.

#Pleroma has lots of sarcasm, but lots of trash talking.

#Pixelfed is about capturing the beauty in everyday life.

#WriteFreely is about undistracted, lengthy thoughts (mostly technical).

Just my general observations.

Still amused by all the posts declaring that " will never get any traction" because it doesn't have [insert completely unnecessary Twit feature here]. It's like people think Masto just suddenly appeared out of the ether six months ago. It's been here for years, and it's just fine. 😂

Bigou,

@j That, and #Mastodon is far from the only #microblogging service of the #Fediverse. You have #Akkoma #GoToSocial, the #keyApps (#Misskey, #Calckey & #Foundkey), #Kibou, #Pleroma, #Rebased, …

Most of which offer more functions than Masto does, and often add fuctions Twitter never had. (… Or have long since removed.)

@butter @Ephera Have you considered using the #Mastodon forms #Hometown and #GlitchSoc? Otherwise, there's #Soapbox, #Pleroma and #Misskey

eshep, to fediverse in Mastodon monoculture problem

@butter, @dessalines, I've grown quite fond of Friendica for that very thing, following things, not just people. Not only does it let me follow topics via tags, but things like #lemmy and #guppe get added as "forums", plus I can follow any #RSS or #Atom feed. All of these are added the same as adding any other contact (follow). All of these different ways of following things get listed in the same area of my account, as "contacts", where they can be easily separated into to multiple groups (lists). Each followed hashtag, forum, contact group, or protocol type is always listed down the side of my page where I can simply click on it to filter my current feed.

I know that other #fediverse / #ActivityPub interfaces such as #Pleroma, #Akkoma, #Misskey, #Calckey, #Hubzilla, and #Streams have some/all of these capabilities, each to their own extent. However, having played around extensively with all of them, I've come to find that #Friendica is the one that works best for me. And at the end of the day, this is the only thing that matters. It may be a bit time consuming, but trying all the things is the best (only?) way to see how they'll work for you.

I've been experimenting with Soapbox platform (based on Pleroma) for fediverse. I have my own server using a hosted service.

On a small server, hashtags seem to be pretty useless. I hoped to create a niche account, but without the ability to search for posts or follow a hashtag it's not useful.

I could get on a much larger server or simply use a different tool.

If anyone is interested, I commented on this Soapbox issue.

I wonder if anyone has looked across #fediverse platform themes yet, to identity which are pulling #Google fonts, a serious #privacy tracking threat. Which platform is most resistant to and prioritising privacy?

Users should know if their instance is intentional about protecting them from surveillance #capitalism.

Hiker,

@madargon The admins of #Pleroma, #Hubizlla, #Calckey, #Misskey, #Friendica and other instances in the #Fediverse have no such problems. When you want to be the great big one (in a decentralized network!), you also get into trouble.

atomicpoet, to fediversenews

This take is annoying.

But it's also not entirely @gruber's fault because the media doesn't really talk about the Fediverse, and when they do, it's as a synonym for "Mastodon".

How would @gruber know about the massive development efforts to build more user-friendly alternatives to Mastodon?

No one in the media talks about the growth of *key apps, and how they're now the #2 most used Fediverse platform.

That story isn't being told.

The main reason why I can't move from my current installation to anything else ( , , , or ) is that none of them accept importing an existing backup from a different service into a brand-new account. At most you can migrate your address but not your posts.

jesscanady, to fediverse

I frequently see posts where instance admins are bemoaning Mastodon's lack of a given feature. Many times these are features that other Fedi microblogging systems like Akkoma/Pleroma already implement well.

So why aren't those as popular? Why are folks sticking with Mastodon?
