General love of all things linux and the choice it provides. I prefer to hang my hat in gentoo with e16 but do like to keep up with other stuff.

eshep,

@nicknonya If it truly is "different" you want, take a look at stuff like Tiny Core Linux, MenuetOS, or ReactOS. If you want a bit more milder different, may go with a BSD/UNIX. There's loads of really weird stuff out there if you dig around a bit. Or just plunder DistroWatch for somethin that strikes you. Who knows, you may just find a new comfortable on yer journey. 😁

eshep,

@TimeSquirrel @nicknonya Been runnin basically the same setup for the better part of ~20 years. That's not gonna stop me from playin with stuff I don't know or like though.

eshep,

@Successful_Try543 Fair point, yes! ...but I did recommend it as a "truly different" choice. 😉

eshep,

@nyan How different does different get than very unsame? 😜

eshep,

@krash @steeznson I always recommend to anyone interested in learning about linux. I'd advise LFS only as a follow up to that once they have an understanding of what goes where.

@barbara Is bash itself not already an improvement on ""the basic stuff""?

...and whitespace in filenames is simply unacceptable, and should not be encouraged. 😆

What's wrong with the method we've been usin forever of working with dumbly named files? Just "enclose em", or use an escape char in em.

Easily find program name from context menu/without terminal?

I occasionally need to know the names of programs. I asked here about “Run as Administrator” being added to the context menu (like in Windows), and the response was basically “can’t be easily done”. an example is if I wish to edit a config file it cannot be done without accessing the terminal. Knowing the name...

eshep,

@flork Granted it's listed in a mimeapps.list file, you should easily be able to pull the program name out of there by querying against the file in question's mimetype.

And while "can't be easily done" may be generally true, don't call it quits; some file managers may offer less "not easy" than others. Don't end your customization exploration because the file manager you currently use can't do what you want, try fiddlin round with some others. The process for each file manager is going to be different, and getting the name of the program for any filetype is also going to differ depending on the syntax required for altering each different file manager.

eshep,

@thelinuxEXP @Jayjader @V0ldek I'm perty sure review is the other half of that same task that folks want to pawn off on AI.

"You can check out the full change log on our Discord!"

Please, stop doing this. Don't put important info behind a closed login wall. It's ridiculous. You're just making it more difficult for everyone.

eshep,

@gamingonlinux ...or the: "all our information is ""available"" on Facebook"
😂

eshep,

@perishthethought You could very easily use as a launcher for each game! Just set them up as you were launching a single game from the terminal. As far as a 3rd party GUI goes though, really is the most straight forward yer gonna find. Setting it up is not as huge an undertaking as it first appears. I'd be happy to help you get it configured if you need, just holler.

The Fedipact table showing which servers are blocking Threads is not accurate!

For example, it says that atomicpoet.org is blocking Threads when, in fact, this is not correct. So view this entire site with skepticism.

@fediversenews

eshep,

@atomicpoet They also don't appear to have cast a very wide net when collecting those inaccuracies. 😆

eshep,

@Sunny @minamoog It'd be hard to argue for anything against #portage! The only time it's not pleasing to look at is when it's littered with [ B ] markers. 😆

I wanna nuke Windows from the gaming PC. can I ask my sysadmin to set up a Windows VM for Steam? will Age of Empires 2 Definitive Edition work there? I wanna play ranked maybe too :jelsweat:

eshep,

@kaia As long as you can somewhat competently read english, you should have no problem gaming via Steam on linux without the supervision of any ""sysadmin"" type person. Most games are playable without any hassle, they "just work" nowadays. However, some online games will flag you as a cheater if they detect you playing from without a Windows environment.

First real Arch user moment [Mission Failed]

(Bonus update) I’m back on KDE6 and it’s actually working! I ran Cinnamon for about a day before missing KDE and tried a fresh install of EndeavourOS. It worked fine, Wayland still doesn’t work but I’m only getting minor bugs with x11 compared to when I tried to update from 5.27...

eshep,

@HouseWolf Maybe try testing the hardware on a known working system.

Maybe I should start an irregular series of "What Hubzilla is like" posts for people in the Fediverse, Mastodon specifically, who don't know anything about it. Not for those who want to switch, but for those who assume that Hubzilla is just like whatever else they know. Like, for Mastodon users who blindly assume that Hubzilla is just like Mastodon with a different UI and then act accordingly. Thus, it'd mostly focus on how Hubzilla is different from Mastodon.

The difficult part would be to limit these posts to only 500 characters. Minus what I'll need for the hashtags, namely #Hubzilla, #FediTips and #FediverseTips to increase discoverability for those who are interested and #FediMeta, #FediverseMeta, #CWFediMeta and #CWFediverseMeta so that these posts are automatically removed or hidden behind generated content warnings by already existing filters. Because I know for a fact that many Mastodon users won't touch anything that goes even a smidge over 500 characters. And I know that there are Mastodon users for whom any and all Fediverse meta is too nerve-gratingly techy.

#Long #LongPost #CWLong #CWLongPost #Hashtag #Hashtags #HashtagMeta #CWHashtagMeta

eshep,

@jupiter_rowland @Regez I don't get much ridiculousness on my feed(?), it's not too difficult to weed out, but I saw a rather disheartening thing show up recently that was encouraging people to "fight back"/"take a stand" against #Meta connecting to #Mastodon.

No, that's not what #ActivityPub is for, the whole idea is to allow communication across different services. There seems to be quite a few people who do not want non-Mastodon things in the #fediverse. I'm not so sure that it's simply a matter of ignorance, although that probably has a bit to do with it.

eshep,

I do like your idea of PSA posts to help educate those who think #fediverse is the fancy name for #Mastodon, but I'd advise you keep em a bit more headline sized. I'm not so confident in the target audience's eagerness to read a @jupiter_rowland sized post on anything. 😆

eshep,

@twinnie Everything @d3Xt3r said, plus, #wayland just aint quite there yet. Do yer gamin in #X with #amdgpu and be happy.

Tried Onsdel. No, ES. An utterly unmemorable name, but a good progress even over the recent dev , which had numerous improvements already. But any version that won't make me accidentally open Transform 20 times per project would win me over, and this one finally doesn't :)
Modelling as I go, looking at the current shape and adding or cutting, is also more feasible, which is important for those of us without spatial ability.
And yes, my design is heavy on fillets.

eshep,

@Triffen Hadn't heard of this'n yet. Certainly gonna give #ondsel a try for my next drawing now. I'm already a huge fan of #freecad, so anything that makes it less fiddly is a win in my book!

Android Keyboard with keypad? (lemmy.ml)

I’ve looked under my bed, in our pantry, and even went under the deck, nothing. Please help me find a FOSS android keyboard in which I can have the numbers to the right of the keyboard, like a computer keyboard keypad, even better if it has gifs… The only android keyboard I know about that has that option is Swiftkey. @wwwgem I've been extremely pleased with @tuxedocomputers in both product quality and support. Next laptop will assuredly be another from them.

eshep,

@SeekPie Documentation or translation assistance is almost always a good way to help.

eshep,

@SeekPie Sometimes different, sometimes similar. Look into different software you enjoy using and find out what's needed. If it's something you can provide, and you feel like doing so, go fer it.

eshep,

@JokeDeity Seeing a device called "Bluez" trying to connect to your computer (in some undefined way) doesn't necessarily mean it has anything to do with bluez.

GPU upgrade for linux workstation

Hey all! This is my first post, so I’m sorry if anything is formatted incorrectly or if this is the wrong place to ask this. Recently I’ve saved up enough to upgrade my graphics card ($350 budget). I’ve heard great things about amd on linux and appreciate open source drivers so as to not be at the mercy of nvidia. My first...

eshep,

@neogeo It's been excellent, but again, I'm not doing very heavy work with it. Although, if I do play around with large models, it has no problem redering em. And games such as Star Citizen, Starfield, and Cyberpunk 2077, all run fantastic when turned up to 11.
