How long have you been on the fediverse?

badrihippo,
@badrihippo@fosstodon.org avatar

@evan completed 5 years on in Jan but I chose the next option because I identify more with having been 6 years :fedi:

(I was on before that, so if you count that as Fediverse it is indeed "6 to 10 years")

There's some diaspora on Vancouver Island (and several other places in Global North) who have severe , to the point that they're not just into & capitalism but they're so self unaware of internalized racism that they don't even know when racist white folks them to defend/justify racism & use them to push WS beliefs on their own peoples.

I lose my fu*king shit around Asians like this. They harm us Asians who fight for human rights.

msquebanh,
@msquebanh@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

Here's the thing: It's my #POC community & as I'm a part of that, some of my #responsibilities is to address it within that community. It's not #WhiteFolks' jobs to do that - calling out/calling in/educating #diaspora Asian folks suffering from #InternalizedRacism & hurting fellow #Asians.

Just like it's not POC's jobs to deal with white #racists - it's the responsibilities of white folks to deal with problematic bigots in their own communities.

May I just say that not being able to set your own fucking character limit on your own fucking Mastodon instance without having to fucking fork fucking Mastodon is a fucking pain in the fucking arse.

Thank you for listening and here’s wishing you a lovely day.

Do you remember #Diaspora?

Have you ever tried it?

It does a lot of sane and interesting things, It was glissed because it was made by a bunch of #flossbros (too much leftist), then everybody called the experts and they came out with ActivityPub, which is a a W3C project, that means also the #TechBros are indirectly involved.

Maybe it is time to come back and rediscover it... 🤔

Sometimes, a bad memory can tear open an old wound that you thought had long healed. You wonder to yourself whether things could have been different, if you had made better decisions. Your mind teases you of what could have been, as your morosely gaze into a deep abyss of failure.

You think about what it would take to be reborn and start again, but your head is clouded, and your body weak. The dream lives on in you, but fear and sorrow just keep you down. To move a finger is to lift a mountain.

@deadsuperhero@social.wedistribute.org avatar

I can’t shake the feeling that my involvement with ended in failure. I know that it was forever ago, when the tools and technology were much more limited. Seeing the state of the project over the past eight years breaks my heart.

I was young, dumb, and sure of myself. I thought I could see the future, but I had no idea what it looked like. Most servers are a ghost town, and the project is a sad bloated husk where bitter men go to shave their yaks.

I just wasn’t who the project needed to put it in the right direction.

@deadsuperhero I remember being very excited to support ’s crowdfund, and I still have my t-shirt here somewhere. 😂 But when everything was said and done, I did not have the technical know how to run my own server.

YOU, however, sound miles ahead of me, and therefore plenty knowledgeable enough to start good things, if you really want to.

The diversity of network and UX types across the fediverse/social web that my little Friendica server sees is astounding. This is just Diaspora and ActivityPub federated content since Bluesky is integrated through a client API not AT.

#Introduction: Hello, I am #new here! I was on #Diaspora for quite a few years but it was a very small community. Mastodon seems larger and more dynamic.

I'm mainly here to chat about #RPG games. I have been playing #DnD since the #1980s, starting with Moldvay #Basic and Keep on the Borderlands. These days I am mostly playing #DCC, but also enjoy Call of #Cthulhu, Traveller and #OSR games.

Besides #RPGs, I like British comics, especially #2000AD and its spin-offs. And #cycling.

A few more thoughts on what I posted a few days ago on Xi's China expecting diaspora Chinese folks to support the PRC:

  • none of this is new, literally
  • Qing dynasty Mandarins were surprised to find that there were thriving Chinese communities in SE Asia
  • they swung between 'wtv they're not Chinese' to 'pls help us put down rebellions'

Diaspora Chinese have always had a diversity of perspectives on how much and how often China figured in our lives. For centuries.

An important distinction is slowly being uncovered about the definition of the term "fediverse." Who is it that gets to decide what this place is? How are we being represented? These are not easy questions to answer and if we don't do a better job describing ourselves, then the job will get done for us by people who don't understand the underlying values we hold.

youronlyone,
@youronlyone@c.im avatar

@liaizon Personally, and the way the term was used, since it was first coined, was any software with support (later ).

When there were discussions of having a new name, I ran suggestion threads and polls about it, and one suggestion/choice was mycelial, mycelium. I like it so I started using it myself.

By definition:

  • A mycelium is a single network.
  • A mycelial is a collection of various mycelium.

Adopting it to :

  • The "Fediverse" is one mycelium network.o, based on ActivityPub
  • "The Federation" / * is another mycelium network.
  • is a mycelium network.
  • is another mycelium network.
  • / is a mycelium network.

Together, they are called Mycelial Web. A collection of "decentralised, distributed, federated, and open, network". A subset of the Social Web.

A "sister", if you will, of the Mycelial Web is IRC and e-mail, as examples.

So:
I. Web
A. Social Web

  1. IRC
  2. E-mail
  3. Mycelial Web
  • Fediverse/ActivityPub
  • ATproto
  • diaspora
  • Matrix
  • XMPP

The Expulsion of the Moriscos (Al-Andalus y la Historia, 2024-03-20)
by Mercedes García-Arenal & Gerard Wiegers

"Between 1609 and 1614 about 300,000 were forcibly expelled from Spain, chiefly through the Mediterranean ports, and sent to North Africa. This mass deportation was accomplished with the help of galleys and ships of the royal navy, and was strictly organized by the bureacracy of the Crown. With it the monarchy hoped to end more than a century of what was called “the Morisco question.” In this article we will analyze the positions of the political and religious authorities, and the factors that led to the solution that was finally found: the forced displacement of an entire religious and social group"

"In the week that Ireland turns everything green and celebrates its diaspora, a new online archive has given voice to the human cost paid by generations of emigrants.

More than 7,000 letters from emigrants to North America spanning four centuries have been collected and digitised, giving poignant insight into the homesickness, tribulations, and occasional triumphs, of those who crossed the Atlantic."
