I shared this privately before, but I just got the okay to share it in public. The Bluegrass Archive is online with a website and everything. This is a MASSIVE trove of legal live #bluegrass recordings from earliest days right up to now, which you can download and listen to for free. It is one of the greatest achievements of the fan-driven #music archiving community I've ever seen. I contributed a small number of filesets out of the thousands here. #music
PeerTube, the Fediverse's alternative to YouTube, is normally associated with video. However, you can also upload audio files directly to PeerTube. It will accept lots of audio formats including .mp3, .ogg, .aac, .flac, .wma etc.
You can optionally upload an image file as a thumbnail. If not, audio files will show a black screen by default.
For those new to Mastodon, here are some handy tips on getting the most out of your experience:
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
Follow a lot of people
You can always un-follow them later, if you want to 😋
Also, click on and then follow hashtags that interest you, like #Music or #Books or #ClimateChange or especially #FollowFriday, and discover more good people to follow.
Because of his willingness to play for segregated audiences, throughout much of his life, Louis Armstrong was called a sellout and an Uncle Tom by many Black Americans, But, in 1957, Satchmo blew up-—blasting Eisenhower to bits for not condemning treatment of Black American students in the South. His passionate words made world headlines, alienated many white fans, and divided Black America.
In 1920, Mamie Smith became the FIRST Black American to record a Blues song. "Crazy Blues” ushered in a new era of "race records.” Previously, white singers copied Black vocal styles in blues recordings, while Black entertainers like Ma Rainey, Ethel Waters, & Bessie Smith were confined to the "Chitlin Circuit." Mamie Smith’s success paved the way for black blues & jazz musicians to thrive.
Remember: you’ll do more for musicians if you delete Spotify, pirate all your mp3s and buy a single album every month on a platform with fairer percentages (Bandcamp, formaviva, heck even iTunes).
Then I began tooting my #music and a ton of #puns#jokes, and #memes. And you all responded so genuinely, and with such positivity, that I very quickly was made to feel at home.
My deepest gratitude goes out to the #Mastodon community, a #community that has literally improved the quality of my time on this spinning rock as it hurtles through space, towards a future that seems more uncertain every day. It’s unlike any other “social media platform” here.
Today, I celebrate the arbitrary milestone of five thousand followers, and I just wanted to say thank you.
Thank you for the favourites, the boosts, the follows, and the comments.
Thank you for your conversations, discussions, and corrections.
Thank you for listening to my music and sharing your thoughts on it with me, and for following along on your chosen streaming service. This has been amazing.
But, above all, I’d like to thank you all for making Mastodon the friendly and welcoming place that it is. My experience here is one of wonderful acceptance, and it has been truly humbling. There is nowhere else quite like it.
Streaming music is a great way to discover new music, but if you want indie artists to have the time, money, & emotional support needed to continue making new music, you need to purchase their music outright.
This is the last check I got from my distributor for all streaming royalties for the past 3 years. It’s “sandwich money” as Weird Al would say.
Today, we're beginning to federate a selection of publishers based in Germany and the U.K. We've also introduced @FlipboardDE, a new profile for the Mastodon community in Germany. In the first test, we are partnering with 21 publishers to federate their profiles and Magazines. Follow the profile to see all the stories they are posting on Flipboard, or topically curated Magazines to get coverage on specific areas of interest. Here's a blogpost that explains more.
Here are all the accounts you can follow for federated publishers in the United Kingdom. To find their Magazines, simply search for the publisher profile and you should see a list of everything they're curating.
Born 122 years ago this week, Louis Armstrong's charisma & warmth captivated audiences globally. But, by the 1950s and 1960s, many Black Americans perceived him as outdated, out of touch with civil rights, and hesitant to voice his opinions—labeling him an "Uncle Tom." This deeply wounded Armstrong. But he was a far more complex & nuanced man than they knew.

I got a threatening message from Reddit for still having one of my subreddits dark (private). So to keep my mod status there, I am slowly reopening it. However, I am launching a replacement community over on Lemmy and encouraging our users to join.
A 639-year-long piece of music being played in a cathedral in Germany has just changed a chord for the first time in 2 years - after letting that previous single chord drone out day and night - as crowds gather in anticipation.
I have a playlist on Soundcloud of my own original rock music and I’d love for you to check it out, preferably on some good speakers, up loud. I’m really proud of this, and would love to hear what you think.
If you have “I like music” in your profile, you must listen. It’s the law!! 🫶
