The #BBC has apologised to the batrachian #Farage, but the sum total of it is: "We reported you lost your #Coutts account because you don't have the money. This was not entirely accurate. You also lost your account because you're a bigoted shit."
Farage and his fanbois are gloating. But he's still gunning after someone senior in the bank, because it was never about money or 'spree feach'. This is about revenge and intimidation, and always has been.
Good morning from London, the pause in fighting in the #Israel - #Gaza war was due to start nearly to hours ago. Here are some observations of colleagues on the ground -
V #BBC Yolande Knell:
'In the hours before the truce was due to take hold, there was intense fighting in Gaza.
Smoke could be seen rising up from Israeli air strikes and there was the constant sound of artillery and gunfire.
"The team at BBC Research & Development are researching social technologies and exploring possibilities for the #BBC. One part of our work is to establish a BBC presence in the Fediverse... This is an experiment - we will run it for 6 months, and then look at how much value it has provided"
As "Doctor Who" turns 60, it's time to pose that perennial question: Who is the best Doctor of them all? The BBC asked five fans to make their arguments. But which of this quintet do you think is the greatest? Tell us in the comments if your pick isn't on the list (we're fans of Christopher Eccleston).
I mean, yeah, I dislike some ways #BBC reports about matters but I am still happy they decided to participate in the #Fediverse.
Heck even if #CNN joins I will be happy, and I loathe their reporting.
You want decentralised #SocialMedia to gain popularity and diversity, or do you just want to keep it "pure" and populated by people who agree with you?
The BBC is not just the editors of The Today Programme, or Question Time. It is not just that Panorama about ADHD or Stephen Nolan’s Stonewall podcast
The BBC is also Yasmin Finney and Ncuti Gatwa on Doctor Who. It is Newsround. It is Horrible Histories doing the Bristol bus boycott. It is CBBC dramas for children about autism. It is a platform for new music of all kinds on radio. It has no ads.
Hating “the BBC” because of Tory news editors misses the bigger picture.
Several of you have suggested that Canada’s Boadcaster, the CBC, should follow the BBC’s lead and set up its own Mastodon server. To further this idea, I’ve written the following letter to CBC President Catherine Tait.
Feel free to use the letter as a template if you would like to do the same. She does not appear to have a public email address, but you can reach her by using the CBC’s contact form: https://cbc.radio-canada.ca/en/contact-us #Media#Journalism#BBC#CBC#Mastodon
The #BBC are getting a lot of flak over their non-coverage of the #RejoinEU march in #London over the weekend.... while there was widespread coverage abroad, it failed to be mentioned (apparently, I no longer watch/listen to the BBC news) at all by the BBC.
Of all the anger, the best suggestion was that the next march should actually have Broadcasting House as its end point - mind you, I'm sure they's still manage to ignore that too.
But, hey, I'm sure the new Chair of the BBC will sort it out
Tech Press don’t understand the #Fediverse, so how can they understand its growth?
To hear them talk, most of them believe that #Mastodon and the Fediverse are one and the the same. Some of them go so far as to call the Fediverse the “Mastodon network”.
Which means that they don’t have a clue about what the Fediverse entails, nor how it has grown.
Case in point: between Jan-May 2023, #Misskey and its forks grew by 300,000 accounts. No one in the Tech Press reported this.
Okay, perhaps they didn’t know because the bulk of growth happened in Japan. But still, this is fairly important to know since Misskey is now responsible for generating the bulk of Fediverse content. Even so, Tech Press think the Fediverse is about Mastodon.
And now, #Lemmy and #Kbin are experiencing lots of growth, with both collectively gaining 100,000 users in a week. This is quite a noteworthy event since the #RedditMigration is part and parcel of dissension on #Reddit – a pretty major Big Social platform.
Does the Tech Media report on this? Nope. But again, that’s because they don’t understand the Fediverse nor what it entails.
Then Meta signal that a new project they’re making, #P92 (a.k.a., #Barcelona), will be joining the Fediverse. There’s even screenshots that show this app interacting with remote Fediverse servers.
But instead of reporting about how this will affect the existing Fediverse, press such as the #BBC say this is an altogether different social network than Mastodon.
That’s right! Tech Press don’t even realize P92 will be joining the Fediverse – a social network that already exists!
Is this all ridiculous? Yes.
But this is why we have to be forthright about what the Fediverse is, what it entails, and why it all matters.
Bluntly: If your instance doesn't have rules filtering links from the BBC (and a half a dozen other news sources), you cannot convince me that defederating from them does anything to make people actually safer.
Also if you are CW'ing all links to the #BBC regardless of content: that's yet another thing that weakens what CWs are actually for. As one disability advocate on here put it a while ago, you are taking a curb cut and using it as a skateboard ramp.
What newspaper/news channel is good or bad?
When #BBC joined #Mastodon recently, I saw much moralisation around it. Personally, I think BBC's journalism standards have dropped a lot, but this is true around the world as #SocialMedia puts pressure on media outlets to prize popularity & clickbait over real journalism. That said, no media is ever unbiased. I was a world news editor for a national paper for many years and had the pleasure to 1/3
Am curious seeing some calls to preemptively instance block the #BBC (mostly for a transphobic & misleading 2019 article https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/%22We%27re_being_pressured_into_sex_by_some_trans_women%22) how much is from the UK vs elsewhere?
In the UK, BBC feels like PBS+CNN+NPR+ABC+half-of-Disney for cultural impact growing up. As Brits we hate on it all the time, for various failings, but we're also defensive & often proud of it.
We Didn't Cancel It After Jimmy Saville.
It feels a bit like a beast you have to wrestle, as the alternative seems worse.
Months after @tagesschau and @ZDF from Germany, yet still one of the earlier public broadcaster here on #Mastodon and the #Fediverse: The #BBC has arrived.
Also with their own instance, just as pioneered by @heiseonline 😉

I can't tolerate this #BBC commentary any longer. It is seem level of nonsense you would see when covering the men's game. Which really turns you against the team & it is sad.
'You know, there is nothing we can do about #damage to the TPS. If it has been damaged it’s probably better not to know. I think the crew would rather not know. Don’t you think it would be better for them to have a happy successful flight and die unexpectedly during entry than to stay on #orbit, knowing that there was nothing to be done, until the air ran out ?'” https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20150130-what-caused-the-columbia-disaster
"... we’ve amassed around 60,000 followers across our six trial accounts, and we have had to do very little moderation of replies associated with our content.
"We’ve had really encouraging levels of engagement (i.e. replies, re-posts and likes) on Mastodon.
"For some equivalent posts we’ve seen significantly larger engagement numbers for Mastodon compared to X/Twitter, particularly given the relative sizes of different platforms"
