As "Doctor Who" turns 60, it's time to pose that perennial question: Who is the best Doctor of them all? The BBC asked five fans to make their arguments. But which of this quintet do you think is the greatest? Tell us in the comments if your pick isn't on the list (we're fans of Christopher Eccleston).

@CultureDesk I hope for Daniel #Radcliffe as the next doctor after.

@nichtsicher He makes such interesting choices (perhaps because he has a bank balance that allows him that luxury).

David Tennant took 49% of the vote, making him Mastodon's favorite Doctor (or at least, the favorite of the five options in this poll). He handed over his key to the Tardis in 2010, but is back today as the Fourteenth Doctor in the first of three Russell T. Davies-penned specials, alongside Catherine Tate as Donna Noble. Watched the episode? Let us know your (spoiler-free) thoughts in the comments.

@CultureDesk No love for my little space tramp whose era established the whole idea of regeneration, not to mention the entire Gallifrey mythos? Patrick Troughton!

(Who is, to be fair, My Doctor, not because I saw any of it live - I wasn't even around - but because that's where I came in on KBTC Tacoma's cyclic re-showing of the entire original series in order in the 1990s.)

OscarRobin,

@CultureDesk includes Jodie instead of Eccleston???

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@OscarRobin We only featured the five from the article in our poll, but Eccleston is our pick!

@CultureDesk Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor is yet to be surpassed in my opinion. He not only sold the concept of regeneration, he's also just so damn loveable.

An animated gif of Patrick Troughton as the Second Doctor waving and smiling. The clip is from episode one of "The Enemy of the World"

@LaserdiscTurtle @CultureDesk love me some scheming little space tramp <3

cat_news,

@CultureDesk thank you for putting Sylvester McCoy on the quiz - forever underrated but always has been the best Doctor

mazzeri,
@mazzeri@mastodon.online avatar

@CultureDesk The second Doctor.

The first one was just a cliched old professor. Troughton (and writers) forever changed the character into what we know today.

moira,
@moira@mastodon.murkworks.net avatar

@mazzeri @CultureDesk Exactly and thank you! And also have a Space Tramp stan salute! It involves a recorder. ^_^

@CultureDesk Not sure for whom to vote. One has to look at the actor only, and not the companion or especially the story/writing. I liked Jodie Whittaker but she had too many companions. The series with Tennant may have have the best chemistry between Dr and companion and stories, but also like Mat Smith too. I don't know that it is fair to pick an actor when there is so much around the actor portraying the Dr that sets the environment.

@CultureDesk

This question is not correct — there is no ‘best’. The question is: “Who is your Doctor?”

My Doctor is Chris Eccleston.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@kbsez Fair point!

@CultureDesk
Only five?!

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@SharkAttak We limited the poll answers to the ones named in the BBC article (our favorite is not on their list!).

@CultureDesk
No I was referrring to the five fans questioned by BBC; doesn't seem a very relevant number of people.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@SharkAttak In fairness, the BBC article describes them as Doctor Who experts (they are all TV journalists who have written extensively about the show) so perhaps their opinion carries more weight.

@CultureDesk Tom Baker, by a country mile, but Cristopher Eccleston was also pretty remarkable.

The episode 'Dalek' was an astonishing performance.

@CultureDesk chris eccleston based on the empty child alone

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@kierkegaank The first proper episode written by Steven Moffat and the perfect hide-behind-a-cushion level of creepiness.

timrichards,
@timrichards@aus.social avatar

@CultureDesk Tom Baker is probably the overall greatest (so alien and mesmerising!), but my personal favourite, Patrick Troughton, was brilliant and helped Doctor Who survive by being the very first actor re-cast in the role of The Doctor. He made the regeneration concept work.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@timrichards Fun fact: Troughton's grandson (Harry Melling) played Dudley Dursley in the "Harry Potter" films and was also fantastic in the Coen brothers' "The Ballad of Buster Scruggs."

@CultureDesk Where’s Eccleson?

CultureDesk,

@caleb We only included the five Doctors that were named in the BBC article in the poll, but Eccleston is also our pick!

@CultureDesk

I haven't seen them all, didn't see Jodi Whitaker at all, but I've liked them all for different reasons.

Peter Capaldi might be my favorite though.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@billyjoebowers A lot of love for Capaldi in these comments. He's such a versatile, gifted actor. (Malcolm Tucker! The Doctor! The annoying neighbor in the "Paddington" movies!)

@CultureDesk Jodi Whitaker was robbed by absolutely shit writing.

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@brahn Delighted that RTD is back in the driving seat!

kai_ash,
@kai_ash@masto.ai avatar

@CultureDesk Definitely Christopher Eccleston as the Ninth Doctor. He brought the show back to life.

@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@kai_ash 💯

@CultureDesk How can you make me pick?!?

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@queenofnewyork Everyone has a favorite Doctor...

queenofnewyork,
@queenofnewyork@newsie.social avatar

@CultureDesk Some of us have more than one!

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@queenofnewyork So we're discovering from the comments! And some change their favorites over time!

lanartri,
@lanartri@mastodon.social avatar

@CultureDesk peter capaldi, we love him also

CultureDesk,
@CultureDesk@flipboard.social avatar

@lanartri We watched the unveiling of Capaldi as the new Doctor as though it was a World Cup Final match. He was such a fan that it was like a spectator had been plucked from the crowd and asked to captain the England (or Scotland!) football team.
