The Balkanised Activitypub Federation (BAF…?) is a great source of frustration. I have a friend, @kolev , and he's having a hard time following me. I know the answer is probably "technical limitations", but why do server owners have any say on what their users may or may not read? That's abhorrent.

Eventually I would have to copy my Nostr keypair here and find a good piece of software with which to use it.

I just switched to Linux Mint

Wow! This is so much nicer than Ubuntu! The default theming, appearance, color schemes, icon themes, all of it is much more beautiful. And their "Welcome to Mint" screen that you get on the first boot-up is really helpful.

I am trying ever so hard to cultivate a positive attitude around AI. It’s hard!

Despite the avalanche of graphic monstrosities, the confident misinformation, the collapse of essay-based assessments in schools (not actually a bad thing, if it leads to more on-site, project-based learning).

I’m trying to see it as a tool that can complement (not replace) good design and knowledge management.

(1/2) 🧵

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@ellane

because atm 99% of people pushing it are just playing buzzword bingo & have little knowledge of what it is & what it's weaknesses are.

Is it just me are the majority of its proponents ex bitcoin / web 3,0 inflencers?

See a thing saying "we need 70% less developers when we use AI" and grind teeth while muttering "fewer. 70% fewer developers.." <shakes fist at sky>

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@rasur

70% less to generate code - but 50% more for QA depts due to legal liability issues

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@screwtape

OK re-phased for Professor Screwtape ;)

You'll need just as many more QA resources for the headcount as the number you lose by using AI for coding. Could be more or less depending on how your codebase is impacted by copyright and/or "safety critical" requirements

@rasur

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@screwtape

care to expain your take on it?

@rasur

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@screwtape

That post is pretty much what i see.

AI also generates inefficient code, un-commented code as it doesn't know why the code it generated applies to the problem

@rasur

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@screwtape

academy around those AI???

From talking to 1 group of coders whose work relies on optimized code on one very low powered chipset family their take on AI code is

1 - it's a mix of correct & wildly incorrect/poor quality code - often mixed up

1A - Seems to take code/method from one lang & tries bolt it into another

1B - needs experienced dev or QC dev to triage

2 - Poorly optimized wrt chipsets even if specified.

2A - Needs commenting in many cases

3 - In some cases clearly taken from GPL & non-free codebases

4 - You need to learn what to ask

5 - No case law on legal liability, whose code is it? Should AI code be accepted into safety critical systems

@rasur

dekkzz76,
@dekkzz76@emacs.ch avatar

@screwtape

Another point one made was - AI could be good for low level drudge work, but most management will aim it at removing the devs with the highest wages ie what should be your top talent.
