One of the reasons I will believe just about any story of cop bad behavior is that the ones I don't know firsthand tend to be cut from the same cloth as the ones I do know at close range
A very trivial example is a story from a friend who was a public defender in Philly who had a client, who was denying the charge. His alibi was that he was smoking crack with on-duty cops at the time, and he'd admit the wrongdoing if he had done it. She was like, ok but we can't use this in court.
Another one which I can't remember if I've told here before: in the 70s when my dad was in law school my parents were friendly with a lefty lawyer who was defending a Black Panther. Cops came to his house in middle of day when he was at work & wife was home, with a coffin. They knocked on the door & told the wife, tell your husband this, gesturing towards the coffin.
(Also Philly but this is because I have a lot of Philly in my history, not because Philly cops are worse than elsewhere) #acab
@inquiline can confirm this was not an idle threat. My wife knew personally multiple people who were killed by cops in 1970s Philly. When she was a student her house-mom (a labor organizer) was murdered by cops. The killing was justified by the flimsiest possible pretext so as to send a signal to the students. It wasn’t much later that cops openly firebombed from the air a whole city block. Modern policing practices, evolved from 18th C slave patrolling, have always involved terrorism.

The #LAPD is not expected to like the existence of “#FuckTheLAPD merchandise. But their sole remedy is to not do things that result in people wanting to buy and wear “Fuck the LAPD” merchandise. I understand that would be a difficult task. CA Supreme Court says cops can't detain you if you want nothing to do with them. 'Acting suspiciously' won't cut it anymore. They actually have to name the 'articulable facts' observed to justify detaining you.

Yesterday Salt Lake City Police held a "Coffee with Cops" event at a Starbucks in downtown SLC. The goal of these events it to 'connect with the community', which would be much harder if they told people their backstory.
Two of the officers there were responsible for the killing of Nykon Brandon in August 2022. Brandon was an unarmed (he was in only shorts) homeless man who Fisher Brewing called the police on even though he had already left.
Fun fact : ma compagne mon bébé de 9 mois et moi avons été stoppé par les gendarmes avant de rejoindre la manif contre les #GigaBassines de Bouzel. Ils nous ont obligé à dérouler les banderoles pour la Palestine que nous transportions. Ils les ont pris en photo et ont voulu me les prendre en me disant que je pourrai les récupérer plus tard à la gendarmerie de Pont-du-Château.
J'ai refusé et j'ai demandé un motif légal. Ils ont bafouillé, on appelé au talkie et nous ont laissé passer. #ACAB
