Okay, wait. Because he has terrible judgment, Olberman say he “also dated” one of the reporters ejected from the Trump trial. Is it wrong to assume it wasn’t the one name released, Oliva Nuzzi, and someone else who remains unamed? He won’t say. I just can’t see her going down (in a manner of speaking) that road with him.

Back to regular life... the Open House, although filled with positive feedback on our house, was a dud.

It's so disheartening. We're priced right, the house is beautiful, in great shape, great neighborhood... etc etc.

So we wait.

…Anyone confused about why Republicans are so willing to spend whatever it takes to help Israel? Because almost every major U.S.defense contractor gets some piece of that money every year. The military industrial complex is not a conspiracy theory. For them, politics stops at the dollar’s edge.

95% of ALL Military spending is on-shore, to already wealthy owners. This has ALWAYS been true, even during invasions of Afghanistan and Iraq.

Using AI to turn body-camera videos into police reports is worrisome given that some AI have been shown to "hallucinate" facts, or summarize events inaccurately, EFF’s Matthew Guariglia told Phoenix’s 12News. https://www.12news.com/article/tech/artificial-intelligence-police-reports/75-bab7ec96-5521-40fd-a716-6f4ea908f815

AI doesn't SOMETIMES hallucinate - it ALWAYS hallucinates; that's how it works. Well-trained ,it will frequently resemble reality - just like a cloud can resemble a puppy.

But a cloud ain't a puppy, and AI ain't truth.

This is what I think is a basic question. When a bank sells a home loan it's selling the total value of the loan, which is principal and expected total interest paid minus payments so far, right?

In other words, the sale value is close to

Value = Principal

  • TotalOverLifeOfLoan
  • PaymentsMadeSoFar

yes, but discounted back to the "present value of money", which is as squishy as it sounds.

read keen more closely, and remember the Liability and Equity columns of his Godley tables have the opposite sign of the Asset column. Kinda part of double entry that always trips me. You "add/enter" an entry in two places... The "opposite sign" nature is what makes sure it is a net-zero transaction.

I like to SEE the opposite signs spelled out; 11th century monks, accountants and economists like to enter the same entry in both places.

Old habits die hard. Previous social systems feed favorites into "The Algorithm" to goose their chosen metric "Engagement" - forgetting that once you try to optimize a metric, it ceases being a useful metric.

Mastodon is more like being with your friends in a bakery. Muttering "I like scones" doesn't affect your friends; grabbing a scone and holding it out and saying "See??? Scones!!" does.

Matt Blaze, a respected computer scientist whom I've known pretty much forever, just told me to "Fck off" (without the '') and blocked me here on #Mastodon.

I think you may find the reason why interesting.

While I have frequently stood up for him when he's the subject of unfair comments of one sort of another, I still call issues as I see them.

Earlier today, without any prompting, Matt noted here that he just cancelled a bunch of reservations he'd made to help assure he could get a "cloud free" viewing experience of the eclipse.

In response to my comment that this seemed to be rather obnoxious behavior, given how tightly rooms have been booked, he suggested that people could just use the reservations now. I noted that not everyone can do last minute planning and sometimes it takes weeks for many to plan such trips.

He "apologized" for not meeting my "personal standards". I noted that I felt they were pretty basic standards and wondered how many reservations he had made.

At that point, he threw the invective and blocked me.

What's interesting here is that Matt openly made a point of publicly saying he had made multiple reservations only to cancel all but one. Why he made that post in the first place I can't imagine.

But I stand by my analysis of that post.

Just wanted you to know why I apparently won't be interacting with Matt any more here on Mastodon at least.

I welcome alternative points of view regarding this dialogue.

Best, -L

you're not wrong - tech and tech-bros have fully embraced the "one weird trick" ethos, regardless of it's impact on others. I've seen some brag about multiple restaurant reservations so they can decide late what they feel like doing - often not cancelling because "well, the restaurant will just cancel if I don't show up"

The extreme disregard for consequence to others plays out everywhere from reservations to traffic
