Elon Musk just gave another Mars speech—this time the vision seems tangible

"These are unthinkable numbers, but we’re not breaking any physics to achieve this."

wwew,

@arstechnica musk is a neonazi, profascist billionaire ruining the planet. Stop covering his fantasies.

slyborg,

@arstechnica Eric Berger is basically Musk’s publicist, I find it interesting that Ars took him off the space beat but for some reason continue to publish his completely uncritical fanboy pieces on SpaceX.

He completely ignores the question of who would pay for this Marslift of millions of tons a year to a place with no economic utility at all. As has always been the case with SpaceX, the answer is of course the US taxpayer, who can’t dodge their taxes as easily as Mr. Musk.

Noelwalling,

@arstechnica I am begging publications to stop taking nonsense out of this man’s mouth at face value, and actually do the legwork of fact checking him before posting.

atanae,

@arstechnica I have no trust in anything that ketamine-fueled buffoon has to say.

Stop legitimizing that nitwit just because "daddy’s blood-money boy” lucked into tech.

@arstechnica ah the weird nerds falling for the same Conman's BS for the upteenth time... And for all those wishing it will be the billionaires going to mars, more like it will be a one way free ride to anyone who disagrees with them or considered undesirable by them, involuntarily.

johnoconnor333,

@arstechnica hope we'll make it....Elon or not, Mars is not too far and could be full of surprises (good or bad)

@arstechnica Unfortunately, Space Karen has a long and storied history of talking out of the wrong hole.

He's best ignored, or laughed at.

@arstechnica I do not want to go there and die a horrible death from radiation exposure and perchlorate poisoning. Maybe robots should set up mitigation first?

jcriecke,
@jcriecke@urbanists.social avatar

@arstechnica so many people hating on space exploration because Musk is pushing it further than anyone has in decades. Musk is a POS but space exploration is cool and we should keep doing it. Y’all would’ve complained about reaching the South Pole a hundred years ago too.

kkeller,
@kkeller@curling.social avatar

@jcriecke @arstechnica space exploration is cool.

Space colonization is exceedingly difficult, and it's a sick joke to think Musk can do it in our lifetimes.

Why do you give this gasbag any credibility?!? His claims are absolutely thorough nonsense.

@arstechnica AT drinking the cool aid. Mars is dead. Nothing will make it habitable for millions of years. There's no terra forming.

Iarcini,

@arstechnica how about those hyperloops. Anyone who keeps falling for and amplifying his bullshit is an idiot

@arstechnica folks, what are we doing here

ralfmaximus,
@ralfmaximus@mastodon.social avatar

@arstechnica

"This will require an absurd amount of launches, 10 per day, and the dispatch of a fleet of hundreds of vehicles to Mars during the short-trip trajectory window that opens between Earth and the red planet every 26 months. Ultimately, while it is challenging, Musk believes that humans could terraform a 'fixer-upper' planet like Mars."

Please, you're KILLING me here. The guy's been snorting his own date rape drug supply far too long.

wmacf,

@arstechnica It's just so breathtakingly stupid. Let's go across a vast distance to get to a place where there's no breathable atmosphere and minimal water, because that concept is simply sexier than taking systematic steps to fix the one-in-a-million planet we already live on.

    i think we should go to Mars. an effort led by a sane organization on a sane timeline, with climate change on Earth well handled in the meantime

    none of that has anything to do with plutocrat manchild Musk

    Lazarou,
    @Lazarou@mastodon.social avatar

    @benroyce @hankg @arstechnica Musk isn't serious about any of his Sci-fi hustle.
    His plans are vague, like he just picks them off the internet while chatting to people on his tatty website.

    To reach out into Space, which I feel as a species we should, we need an Earth nice and happy and able to support those fledgling communities off world. An Earth that continues to make the things new worlds don't have the facilities for, medicines and computer chips and the like.

    @Lazarou
    Musk on Mars has been consistent. He was wanting to do it back in 2002 when I talked with him. Back then he wanted to spur interest in space colonization by placing a greenhouse on Mars. I told him how fast interest in Apollo waned, and his greenhouse wouldn't provide the sustained interest needed. I then told him if he wanted to happen in his lifetime, he'd have to do it himself. We then talked about how to do it and pay for it. He's still on plan.

    Proper long term plans don't spell out exact dates and exactly what tech will be used to reach the desired outcomes, only aspirational ones. This is because unknown issues may be found. One needs to do R&D to find the paths that will work. If you are running a multi decade project, like Musk is, and you don't understand this, you are doomed to failure.

    PS: This is a project that won't be finished in Musk's lifetime.

    @Lazarou @arstechnica @benroyce

    @hankg
    Think about this. If Musk had started spending millions a year on Mars habitat designs back in 2002, he wouldn't have had enough to keep both SpaceX and Tesla alive in 2008. Also those designs couldn't take into account advances in materials, and knowledge learned about Mars. The time to make the habitat decisions is after one knows Mars can be reached. Then one looks at all the ideas others have spent their money on developing, and go with the best ideas.

    @arstechnica pleading for more funds no doubt, being like 5 years behind schedule to reach orbit and out of all the money that was awarded to reach Mars.

    Space X defaults first. A year or two later Tesla goes into chapter 11. But at least he’ll have his online nazi bar and the boring company

    delawen,
