Old software guy, raised in France and west Africa, came back to the States,

US Army 79-83, spent four years in West Germany, (yeah I'm that old), lived off and on between Chicagoland and Quetzaltenango Guatemala. Worked back and forth between Osaka and the USA.

Kids are raised and gone. Remarried and living in western Wisconsin. Enjoy photography, writing a book about The Driftless, learning to made drone video. Life's been good to me.

Breathe in: life is going on all around you.

@Binder

I used to be one of those guys with the backpack in one hand and the laptop bag in the other, running like a demented lemming through the airport to catch a flight, twice a week

After 9/11 things got very bad indeed.

So I talked to my clients, asking for a per diem, hotels and meals and suchlike. The kids were old enough, I"d fly them down every so often. It was great.

But I'd drive to these destinations and just stay there, to avoid going through the airport and TSA.

But lemme tell yez all, if DJT put up a sign in front of Trump Tower on 5th Avenue in NYC reading "The line to suck Trump's dong starts here." - every Republican east of the Mississippi would be in line.

futurebird, to random
@futurebird@sauropods.win avatar

For an acquittal at least two or three jurors AND much of the general public in NYC would need to have serious doubts about the legal soundness of the case. It would need to start with "My client is difficult, not well liked, and he continues to refuse to admit that he had an affair but none of these things are illegal... blah blah blah"

Trump can not abide. He hamstrings his council by insisting they maintain his self-image AND keep him from being found guilty.

The defense is playing a dangerous game, but it's their only winning strategy - well, one with any hope of scaring off guilty votes in the jury room:

TFG's vindictiveness has led him to snarl at everyone in the justice system, people who will go through their lives surrounded by security. Not the jurors.

Trump says a lot by saying nothing at all - about Ukraine aid passing by a huge majority.

Trump is dancing on the head of a pin trying to stay in Putin's good graces after he failed at keeping Ukraine aid blocked.

How far down the rabbit hole will MAGA go for Putin?

I've been watching myself change, over time, the metaphor of the Ship of Theseus returns, as I throw away raggedy old clothes, raggedy old thinking I've hung onto for far too long. Who am I becoming?

I hear you about the irritability - I'm no longer willing to put up with people's bullshit - even my own bullshit.

New AI music generator Udio synthesizes realistic music on demand.

But it still needs trial and error to generate high-quality results.

I've been playing around with it. Asked it for an SATB choir arrangement in G flat. It gave me two versions, both of which seldom drifted far from the tonic and did not understand harmonic resolution...

Verdict: this Udio is not ready for prime time.

Some metascience thoughts as we share our latest preprint.

Social science and the health sciences have so much to bring to help software teams, not just on the individual level but on the systemic organizational level. Not just in our "caring topics" but in our radical centering of human experience as a technical craft, our empirical methods.

There is an underinvestment in developer experience not just categorically, but within the topic itself

(Preprint here:

@tuban_muzuru@ohai.social avatar

@grimalkina

Having done a zillion code reviews, I can understand, in some fashion, the anxiety of finding problems at code review time.

I would say, remove the anxiety from the process by making it mandatory - just find someone on the team you feel could do a good job.

One on one is far better. Build up unit tests around what's found in code reviews.

After a big round goes off, the danger isn't over. In fact, it's why the military helmet was invented: big ol' chunks keep falling for a long time and the incautious are killed thereby.

By "reflexively liberal", progressives and other non-insane people are tired of writing anything which might convey gravitas or even sanity to the MAGA people. Yes, it's a knee jerk reaction, it's a bullshit allergy. NPR news may not always be to my liking, but it's believable.

I took my little kids (before teen yearz ) into the living room and closed the door and said I had a huge secret to tell them:

Everything about raising kids is bullshit. I put on a video of an F/A-18 Hornet being launched off a carrier.

"See that blast shield? That little pin in the front wheel? That aircraft is at full thrust. That aircraft is you."

Heh! It's nice, imagining. I've dealt with restoration of old buildings - plan on paying three times for the property.

First, the ongoing upkeep - if you have to do a roof, move your number up to pay-four-times.

Second, the cost of labor. In France, this is a soap opera of its own.

There are teams now scouring Italy and France for this sort of joint, ten bedrooms, old estate, not too far from town.
