9 #witnesses in the #criminal cases against #Trump have received significant financial benefits, including large raises from his campaign, severance packages, new jobs, & a grant of shares & cash from Trump’s media co.

If any benefits were intended to #influence #testimony, that could be a #crime.

You don't speak for me or for America, New York Times. Lord, the hubris of the gray lady. You act as if the dark force over us is ennui. No, damnit, it is fascism. Cover that.

Getting some of the badges out from the archives of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament today to show someone. Here's a thread of some of my favourite ones:

@histodons @politicscurator I used to canvas for the nuclear freeze in Wisconsin in the late 80s. Met a few couples so freaked out by the prospect of nuclear war that they had themselves sterilized.

“If reelected, Donald Trump doesn’t just want to ‘surveil, miseducate, and repress’ LGBTQ children. ‘He wants to interfere in the private lives of millions of adults, revoking freedoms that any pluralistic society should protect,’ Spencer Kornhaber writes.”

This isn’t something to mess around with. Joe Biden may or may not be your favorite person, but he isn’t this.

@MollyNYC @TonyStark I cannot understand why the Democratic response to this spate of anti-trans legislation has been so weak. They just need to point out Republicans won’t be happy until genital inspection of children is common place in school sports. It’s perverse, and it’s going to be used a lot more on girls of color as a shaming tactic. It’s a boon for men who would SA children.

Yes, you could once reach the end of the Internet. It was a very small place then. But if felt quite immense to us at the time.

@shoq I remember when Wired or Mondo 2000 published a foldout map of the web in the mid 90s. It’s so bizarre to me that we used to be able to fit the Internet on a piece of paper

I am eager to search the text of Isaacson's Musk biography to find any references to longtermism & TESCREAL, the noxious faux philosophies that govern much of what he does. The review I await is from @xriskology & @timnitGebru.

It's bad enough that Morning Joe has Christie on every other day, now they're airing his campaign commercial for free. Stop.

toast,
@toast@sfba.social avatar

@jeffjarvis It’s a tell that political pragmatism matters more than integrity to the Morning Joe team. I remember a few years back when they excoriated Christie for using his position as Governor to punish political enemies.

The New York Times’ flagship “liberal” podcast presenting rightwing hack Ben Domenech as a conservative voice worth taking seriously is… not exactly surprising, but certainly a devastating indictment of the mainstream political media and its conception of “the discourse.”

toast,
@toast@sfba.social avatar

@tzimmer_history why does the GOP never mention media bias within the context of Fox news? It’s obvious the whole point is to disadvantage Democrats, not that the GOP truly cares about fairness. The media consistently fails to point this out.

One might think this would force journalists to focus on what's wrong with journalism and its product, news. But...

Do you avoid the news? You’re in growing company. https://www.washingtonpost.com/media/2023/08/01/news-avoid-depressing/

toast,
@toast@sfba.social avatar

@jeffjarvis there’s a large difference between journalism and the American media obsession with scandal, gossip and product placement which we erroneously call “news”. Real journalism requires an investment in reporters and time. Media companies have no interest in this.

I suppose we'd all like to think these absurd SCOTUS decisions will translate to votes 19 months from now. If they don't, what seems like a fascist problem now, will feel downright quaint compared to the fascist problem we're heading toward.

These Supreme Court decisions are the garbage last breaths of a dissolving order that has to turn to repressive action that can't be appealed because it's lost control of society. Under a 5-4 liberal majority, it'll all be reversed in a few years.
