🇵🇭 After a months' long wait on my library's waitlist, I am finally able to listen to the audio book version of @patevangelista #SomePeopleNeedKilling about the #ExtrajudicialKillings under the #Duterte administration in the #Philippines. Though I was living and working in Manila during the first 3 years of Duterte's term and was reading about this in the media as it was happening, this telling of those #EJK in her memoir really brought back to me the flagrant, horrific cruelty. #TootSEA

While I am disappointed that it took a #MassShooting in his own hometown of #Lewiston #Maine for #USRepresentative #JaredGolden (my #CongressionalRepresentative until about 2 years ago) to change his mind about banning #AssaultWeapons like the one the gunman used, I do appreciate that he did and that he publicly acknowledged the error of his previous judgement. I'm thinking about the new #AI tools that convert your voice into a real-sounding version of you speaking in another language, and how Spotify is using them to make foreign versions of podcasts such as "Armchair Expert."

Those podcasts have guests.

I wonder how guests are going to feel about being translated that way.

I bet most won't care or will think it is cool, but I can imagine some people objecting.

I wonder how they will handle that.

@grammargirl I would want to know more about the quality of these translations. Has AI improved the quality of machine translation to make it indescernable from human translation or interpretation?

@grammargirl as a former interpreter, I have mixed feelings and certainly biased skepticism of AI translation, but we are also flawed and make mistakes, so at the same time I am impressed with (jealous of?) how much AI has advanced the quality of its written outputs in English. I haven't spent much time looking into how good AI is in, say, Japanese or Tagalog, but I have read critiques that its quality is not as good in some languages because there isn't as much variety for it to learn from.

@grammargirl perhaps woth enough exposure to formats like your podcast or to linguists explaining foreign words in English, or vice versa, AI could learn to replicate that.

@AbandonedAmerica I listened to this yesterday. Your work is brilliant, but this one was especially powerful in the horrors your described. I don't know that I could have done that withour my voice cracking or tears welling up in my eyes. It never ceases to amaze me how cruel we can be to others, especially those unable to help themselves.

@dancinyogi currently in the US. Cared enough to respond to this poll that I couldn't care less. Although, I have watched every episode of The Crown on Netflix and the first two seasons twice. Their influence on history is fascinating.
