Security best practices for ordinary humans

Just gonna post this for the non-techie non-infosec folks out there for whom this bears saying.

1. Always keep your devices' operating system up to date. Your phone, your computer, your tablet... they all have operating systems (Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, etc). New security holes are found in those OSes every day, and the best way to guard against them is to install the latest updates to those OSes.

2. Don't re-use passwords between services. If you use basically the same password for every website -- this is a very dangerous situation for you. If any one of those web services is hacked and the bad guys get ahold of your password, they can immediately pivot and try to hack every other account you have.

Let's say you have the same password for your email, your bank, and some-forum.com -- your email provider and your bank probably have (hopefully) pretty decent security teams keeping your credentials safe. However, let's assume some-forum.com doesn't. That forum gets hacked and now the hackers have your forum login credentials. Oh look, you sign into that forum with your email address and the same password. It will not take them very long to go try those same credentials on all the big web services to see if they work. Scarier, there are bits of software that will literally do it for them, they just need to give it a set of emails and passwords and it will check if they work on Google, Microsoft, Meta, Amazon, Chase, Etrade, etc. -- at almost zero cost/effort to them.

Okay, but how are you supposed to remember all that?

3. Use a password manager. The password manager will do the remembering for you, and then you only need to remember one password -- the one to unlock your password manager. Most modern password managers offer the ability to automatically fill in your login information into websites, so you just click the "login for me" button and you're set.

The air quality here is terrible today. I suspect it is terrible where you are too... if not today, probably some day soon. Because this is the new normal. 😑

If you don't already have a good quality air purifier for your home, might I recommend making a Corsi-Rosenthal box? They're cheaper and better than most commercially available purifiers.

I made 3 today. One for my house, one for my parents, and one for my sister. They're pretty easy to put together in about 45 min.

hey #Firefox #Browser peeps, my Firefox is doing something weird. The favicon in my Mastodon tab keeps changing. It seems to be every icon for every site I visit except for the Mastodon icon.

Any ideas what I need to flush to fix this?

I've tried clearing my entire browser cache.
I've tried deleting the favicon.sqlite + favicon.sqlite-wal files from my profile.

I'd rather not create a whole new profile, but I feel like that's the only option left unless someone knows a more targeted thing to try.
