The difference in reply/convo quality between Bluesky and fedi is really dramatic. For the tech folks and social media in-crowd there, it's a party of geeky repartee. But from the common folks, and the usual blue checked royalty, the level of conversation is familiar, pedestrian, and often banal, but with occasional flourishes of genius. Basically Twitter before Elmo bought it and shat down its neck.

@supernovae Not quite yet, but easy to see where it’s going. Right now, there’s 1.5 celebrities per 5 proles, so they have to talk to each other. Twitter was like that back in the day, too. Doesn’t last. Human nature sets in and the enshittification erupts like a zit at the prom.

𝗖𝗮𝘃𝗲𝗮𝘁: Old twitter had absurd levels of algo-tyranny that punished everyone. It’s not clear if celebrity BlueSky will be that bad if BYO-algo works, as it very well might.

Pardon the expression, but #Bluesky was all atwitter over @mmasnick’s
ingenious new game designed to give people a lived experience at moderating content and behavior. He could win the peace prize for this!

@kkeller Probably not long. But that may not be bad thing.

@mmasnick may have reinvented the commercial moderation business. Or at least the way it trains its hall monitors.

I'm a preemie there, but after 2 days, it's been easy to see some are big cultural differences between Bluesky and fedi. Most of them stem from the fact that fedi people seem to see reinventing social media as an important "cause," while most of Bluesky seems titillated by the idea of just reconstituting Twitter and having some friends back. Thus far, it comes off as a very unserious, but "fun" atmosphere, as @film_girl put it.

As has been true since I first met you in prehistoric times, I can read anything you say several ways. You’re the most multi-dimensional actor I’ve never met from social media.

The aspiring #Fediverse #Developers Network is upgrading from a single Matrix room to a Matrix space with several rooms, it got too crowded and hard to follow.

Join us if you like. In the right room :-)

@J12t We have a similar space. But our email invites, while allowing people to join our server, never direct them to the invited room once they log in? Have you had this issue? We’re completely flummoxed and Element/Matrix is not much help/

What can go wrong with Chat AI so many ask? Probably better to ask what can't go wrong. No it's not the tech's fault. But that isn't going to make any of us feel better when this shit comes back at us in totally unexpected ways. It's not even 5 months old, and it's already looking pretty ominous.

HELP!
Our Matrix server and/or Element client just doesn't seem to invite people to rooms, properly. Is there anyone out there with a LOT of matrix experience who can help us figure this out? It's been a problem for months, and delays a really interesting project;

Reminds of all the hype about mobile devices and social media. They will market the shit out of AI for years, and a decade from now, we’ll once again realize that they don’t actually care if it works, or whether it’s good for us. They only care about whether it sells.

CNN packed the room with Trump supporters. This was a demand of Trump’s, and acceded to it. Potential Trump opponents, like Democrats, were not allowed in.

That is not a “Town Hall,” and it is not a “news event.” Yet look at how Chris Licht justifies it. He pretends that the “media” has been “ignoring that those people exist.”

would definitely read a long essay on the doomerism-industrial complex:

what it is

how it makes it hard to prioritize threats by treating all of them as existential

how the "marketplace of ideas" of social / mass media created it, by incentivizing everyone to turn their rhetoric to 11

for balance, musings by those who believe the entire idea of a 'doomerism industrial complex' is bunk, because we really DO face that many existential threats

ty in advance for anyone brave enough to tackle 🙏

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@mimsical It’s an important topic. Probably needs a bounty on it :)

I have a crazy and probably terrible idea:

A network of medium-sized, invite-only, interest-focused #Mastodon instances at various subdomains -- movies.social.example, minneapolis.social.example, foodies.social.example, gaming.social.example -- that all relay with each other and operate under the same server rules.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit That’s always been the model I assumed we were heading for, but then comes the fear of bigness; that one player will gain control of too many niches. I honestly don’t think anything can ever prevent that, if someone wants to do that badly enough, but the “fear” around it could prevent buy-in from many needed admins.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@jsit The problem i see is that too much power exists with the instance admin. I think communities will be better forged with groups or some other tech that can transcend the fiefdom problem from any one instance, or consortium of them. But each can still be defederated by them when necessary and prudent.

CNN seems to think its self-induced disgrace is a profile in courage. What contempt the channel has for the public, and for democracy -- and, by extension if we lose our democracy, for freedom of the press.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Yep. All I could think after seeing that debacle, was that Jay Rosen probably just closed on that cabin in the woods. Where the hell do we go from here? One Fox News was a tragedy. Two could be an extinction-level event.

CNN gives Trump an event in front of a audience that gives him a standing ovation. Fuck you, CNN.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

This was not like anything we’ve seen before. Not only did a supposedly serious “news” organization stage an event with an unapologetically partisan audience, and help choreograph an entire campaign launch and strategy on national TV, but they did while still openly setting themselves up to be pistol-whipped as the “liberal media at work” for their efforts. We’re in big trouble.

dangillmor, to random

A streaming service I'd forgotten I subscribed to signed me up for a year for $20. Without any recent notice or warning that I can find (yes, it was in the fine print at the beginning), they renewed it for four times that amount.

The best thing to do with these services is to cancel immediately when you subscribe. Force yourself to manually renew, or you'll find yourself paying a lot more than you planned.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@dangillmor Thanks Dan. You’re always on it. Whatever it is. I’ve referred to you as “the conscience of journalism.” I hope you don’t mind.
