It’s understandable that people invested in ActivityPub would feel it’s the most logical standard for a global open social web protocol. And perhaps it should be. But there are competing arguments for and against it. Other federations happened after long and painful competitions between competing tech and players. In the meantime, there were gateways and bridges between them, just as there is one now emerging with BlueSky. It’s a very healthy competition, I think. And both can evolve to …

Markets work in mysterious ways. We all tell Betamax and VHS jokes, but the fact is, they existed simultaneously for quite a while. There were even “dual format” players made and sold quite successfully. It takes time for techs to prove themselves.

It’s also a very right wing-trite to criticize bureaucracy. But progressives do it all the time, and it’s wrong. Bureaucracy is a beautiful thing. It built and ran our modern government and world so the rest of us could eat out, fuck, and raise good little consumers. Everyone thinks it’s easy to run the world. It’s so not. It takes institutional systems and skills that people can be taught, but can rarely think of or make use of on their own.

Every time I have to get these cancer scrapes I start reflecting on anything about everything. Because I get that idea that it’s random odds that I’ll get the chance to reflect or question tomorrow. It’s cleansing to purge my brain of all those random stupid questions for a day or two. Another instance of making lemonade from lemons.

@BigBoppa That’s what they are, yes. I’ve had 4 over 2 years and can expect the same for life. Doctor likes to say “it won’t kill you, but it could annoy you to death.”

@shoq Yeah, my brother says he has to go in 2 times a year too. For me it’s been blood tests every 6 months and radiation treatments whenever my PSA goes over 2.0. I just went in for a blood draw today, so I’ll see the results tomorrow. I’ve been on an oral chemo called Erleada for the last 6 months so hopefully it’s not going to be so bad. 🤞

Elitism is such a dirty word today. But we have no other word to soften the idea that some levels of meritocracy have always been a vital and respected thing. Yet it’s still stylish to deny it. Equal opportunity and treatment under the law should be the legal standard for everything. But it isn’t and shouldn’t be the cultural standard. Because it never really was. Isn’t this why we’re in the Fediverse in the first place? Because we don’t share the same values or behavioral norms of the …

Well, I’ve watched almost all of The Lobster, and I still have only vague idea of WTF it’s about. As clever vignettes of absurdity, it’s fun. Not sure there is a larger point yet.

Bike Ninjas. If I’m going to get “high riser” handlebars, should I go all out and get the really high ones like this (left), or just the 4.5” risers (right)? I am only a street rider and that’s all I will ever be. The higher looks comfy for cruising, but i worry about stability.

Found this site discussing this very topic

Actually, on inspection, the site is okay for the nomenclature, but the guidance is pretty meh.

To this day I can’t speak of Mastodon or fediverse, publicly or privately, with some of the leading names in media & journalism without getting eyerolls. That one misstep cultivated a deep seated animus that the fedi may never recover from. But time, innovation and investment will help.

Early Mastodonians were convinced it was one of the most evil things about Twitter. And their contempt was a very big reason why they quarreled with the journalists and media figures who were absolutely critical to a widespread migration. Most of them said “fuck you” and moved on to Bluesky, then Threads. It was a major unforced error.

The Right deliberately set out to sully the word “liberal” and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. But the Left killed the word progressive all by itself by letting every random group, no matter how extreme, uncooperative, or just fucking nasty, to use it for their own ends.

galad,
@galad@mastodon.social avatar

@shoq The Progressive movement committed suicide when it started platforming empirically boba fide antisemites and Islamists.

@galad @shoq

These “Progressive” nitwits ally with violently homophobic, misogynistic, antidemocratic, and – yes, antisemitic – terrorists. How, exactly, is this progressive?

Progressives and “Progressives” are as different from each other as actual Christians (so rare! I’ve met a few) and “Christians.”

Ever wonder if any one organization could be supported by MOST liberally-minded citizens, if it had a coherent plan for restoring what worked in the American experiment? What would it take to break people out of their cynicism, sloth, and disinterest in working for real change?

ArtBear,

@shoq
And libertarians & disinfo have ruined liberal. It's a quandary for sure.

Essentially we are talking about those who believe in hope for society vs. cynics who believe in selfishness.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@ArtBear I say it almost the same way. I just replace “society” with “the Enlightenment.” :)

It always sickened me that the press dwelled on what was “most Twitter-like.” Twitter has sucked since its founding, and succeeded despite its arrogance and batshit stupid choices (such as murdering a 3rd party app ecosystem with 250,000 apps). Biggest dick move in business history.

shoq,

I loved the concept of Twitter. I always hated the execution and a culture that seemed to worship NOT innovating.
