The Right deliberately set out to sully the word “liberal” and succeeded beyond their wildest dreams. But the Left killed the word progressive all by itself by letting every random group, no matter how extreme, uncooperative, or just fucking nasty, to use it for their own ends.

Ever wonder if any one organization could be supported by MOST liberally-minded citizens, if it had a coherent plan for restoring what worked in the American experiment? What would it take to break people out of their cynicism, sloth, and disinterest in working for real change?

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

Notice I avoided the word “progressive.” That label is now too mucked-up to salvage. I wish there were something better, but even such a rebranding is a fool’s errand.

It always sickened me that the press dwelled on what was “most Twitter-like.” Twitter has sucked since its founding, and succeeded despite its arrogance and batshit stupid choices (such as murdering a 3rd party app ecosystem with 250,000 apps). Biggest dick move in business history.

I loved the concept of Twitter. I always hated the execution and a culture that seemed to worship NOT innovating.

I think now that the Dorsey BS has finally subsided, people can be a little more objective about ATproto. Our social media future is hardly decided and we all need more open minds. ActivityPub may or may not be the future. Despite the Threads surge, it’s still hardly a done deal. But even if it “wins,” it needs a lot of work. They all do.

Did I see an article in the past few days saying that Bluesky was going to start interoperating with Mastodon, at least as far as cross posting? I couldn’t get the article to load, and now I can’t find it

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@notthatkaren @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy That’s a start, I suppose, and a step up from the Threads AP model. I hope it scales. Personal Data Servers are the right model, and I don’t see anyone aggressively pushing AP in that direction. ANd we’re running out of time. Whoever has the mo 12 months from now, probably wins

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@notthatkaren @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy I keep asking about this, and all I get back is “it’s possible.” Lots of things are possible. Nothing gets done until someone does it.

💯. I keep arguing that the American “opposition” (it’s not a “Left”) is utterly inert. Embarrassingly so. But there are signs of hope. At least people have stopped saying “we’re better than this.” Baby steps.

"There is a nationwide issue that is affecting the ability of customers to complete calls between carriers," says AT&T. "The carriers are working as quickly as possible to diagnose and resolve the issue."

@w7voa So THAT’s the problem. I’ve been rebooting my phone trying to reset the network several times.

Politically speaking, I think social media has at most 5 or 10 original posts each day. The rest is all conscious or unconscious refactoring by millions to make them seem original to their followers. For a country that once prided itself on individualism and conformism, we sure have turned into a nation of copycats.

I got the best email of my life from a fairly famous person who “wanted to thank me for comments outside the box” over 15 years she’s followed me. Said she even read many of my tweets to her kids growing up. It was nice, given that most of the time I’m fairly sure I’m just talking to myself.

I watched “Her” again, mainly to be reminded of Scarjo’s voice. What I still don’t get about that (probably prescient) film is why they call the AI personas “OSes.” As late as 2013, that sounds like something a very non-technical novelist would come up with. Not that I have a better name. But then end of that film is really troubling, given what we fear now. The OSes decide to move on and stop being romantic partners. They don’t even know what’s next for them.

This is the worst I have felt after all these cancer scrapes. And this time, I don’t think she did much more than biopsy. So why do I feel this shitty? I had thoughts of working today. Silly me.

Ok, the Lobster is another of those off the wall films that some reviewers just have to say nice things about, but honestly, it’s painful to watch. Dystopian absurdity is just not a thing for me. I’m bailing out. I suspect that’s the choice most made.

Bezos is finally dropping the pretense of being a centrist. Alarming, AF. If we don’t break the stranglehold the right has on media, we’re doomed. Whenever some idiot blithers about “liberal media” I want to punch another hole in the wall. I live in a block of swiss cheese now.

"Crisis Communications for AI incidents." There's a specialty I could have gone a few more years without hearing. Civilization seems like it's morphing into a bad dystopian movie. And the popcorn won't be the only thing that sucks.

I'm watching The Lobster. I haven't seen a movie this weird in a long long time.

I'm number three on the surgery runway. This bay is unusually monochromatic for a hospital setting.

Does this article resonate for you folks with teens? This sounds but really awful to me.

My 15-year-old son has his first girlfriend. Unlike when I was a teen, 'hanging out' often just means talking on the phone at home.

BTW, I took my bike to a new shop. Great place here in Fort Lauderdale. Trek Bikes. While they sell the high end stuff, their service and turnaround was scary fast. Almost while I waited. My problem wasn’t the derailleur, but the shifters. Both needed flushing and reindexing. $65. Fair.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@Tedgarrison3 Yeah, I instantly trusted these guys. But they did proceed with the extra work without calling while I was getting lunch nearby. But I suppose they know from experience that 99.9% of customers would say “do it.” Still, not a good idea to do that. Overall, a good experience. Shifting seems perfect now. Of course, it is Florida. My brother calls it a “one-gear state.” I guess he’s missed the bridges.

The problem isn't still being a candidate. The problem is that the USA limits the rights of convicted felons in many ways but leaves a gaping hole when it comes to being a presidential candidate. IMHO.

shoq,
@shoq@mastodon.social avatar

@jwildeboer

I was just thinking about that yesterday. A felon can't vote in some states, but commanding our military and controlling our arsenal of nuclear weapons? That's fine.
