This is just a fucking privacy nightmare. We like to laugh and play here about Linux quite a bit, but holy shit this is the actual “If you’re using Windows and expect privacy at all, this is it, you should throw that notion out the window.”

I don’t care how much encryption there is, or the assurance that it’s only on your hard drive, I’ve sat in too many corporate meetings in my career to trust that. There is no way Microsoft is just letting you have that data and they’re not reporting it out. Very least? They’re using ML on it to aggregate what it sees in the screenshot, and then saving that. Worst case, they’re saving it to an encrypted blob storage, calling that encrypted, and hiding deep in the ToS that you actually agreed to that (even though it said in the big letters it was local only, sorry woopsie in the small letters it said it’s also stored there.)

Fuck, ignoring the obvious pron implications that I assume everyone here is immediately thinking of, think of HIPAA, think of the private communications with therapists that people have, think of all of the financial documents you’ve opened, think about bank accounts, chats, fucking everything.

Best buy destroyed their membership about a year ago now, where you only get points if you put it on their credit card, and the amount of points you need to redeem went way up. (Instead of $5 for $250 spent it’s now $5 for seemingly $500 spent).

I tried to shop there while they had their last CEO. he was investing in training, better wages, better stores, more stock, just overall a better experience. Now they have some basic late stage capitalism CEO destroying everything the last CEO built. If you’ve been into a store recently and noticed a decline in quality, that’s why

Fuck em. They don’t care about me as a customer anymore, why should I care about going to them vs a competitor? And trust me, I’m someone who made them wayyyyyy too much money.

I used Sync for Reddit since 2011 or so, that’s how I accessed Reddit 99% of the time. Then they just announced sorry, no more app. For me leaving Sync was akin to leaving Reddit anyway, and someone posted about Lemmy, I learned about the Fediverse, and I came over.

Now when I need to google something and Reddit pops up it feels… overencumbered . Heavy, too much going on with it. Lemmy feels clean, simple, what Reddit used to be. I won’t be leaving any time soon.

This is a big one, accept there are things we cannot control, like world events. Do what you can, like voting. (People, please vote), and national elections is absolutely important.

But what’s even more important is local. It sounds boring, but voting in local elections, getting involved in local advocacy, learning your city council members, pressuring for local change. Those things matter and need your support, and your support can actually change things.

My personal anxiety is climate change. I can’t change anything nationally except voting (in every election). What I can do is make my own house greener, be greener myself, and push my local government to be greener and push that we as a city/neighborhood will be greener. Planting more trees, consuming less fossil fuels. Nay-sayers love to say there’s nothing individually that can be done, but we can change our local governments and change our own neighborhoods. Now, if everyone started doing that…

Open carriers show off two major things, and neither one of them are “tough guy”.

First is fragile masculinity, they are worried that they aren’t seen as “manly” enough, so they have to show off to everyone that they are totally manly. It’s like women wearing that new handbag out and about, they want others to notice it.

Second is pure fear, fear that at any time any moment something is going to happen, and the only way they feel safe is by carrying a lethal weapon with them at all times. You know, rather than dealing with what is causing the fear in the first place.

So, we have a terrified person carrying a lethal weapon who is worried about what everyone around them think. To me, that’s the more worrying person in a room.

I was in Europe on their rail and we rode from Switzerland to Rome in a day. Albeit a bit long, 8 hours, but when we got off we realized that entire trip was the same distance as Denver to Seattle, a flight we frequently take.

Flying takes us about 3.5 hours plus security, waiting, travel to and from the airport. Plus then sitting on a cramped plane with very little service.

I wish I could take 2 more hours and have an enjoyable ride like the rail they have over there.

You blame a lot of people who make decent salaries, but put none on your employer, your local government, your states, or anything else. There’s a plethora of things your own government could do to help out. Why blame the people who obviously left the west coast due to cost of living (the same thing you’re complaining about), and not blame the system and people who allowed it to happen in the first place?

Adding on the whole literally calling them “refugees” like they’re leaving some barron hellscape behind while literally just exposing the same problems in capitalism as a whole. Just because you were isolated from these problems before doesn’t mean they didn’t exist.

I just don’t get it. You claim to be left leaning and working class - but the second these issues we fight for literally start affecting you you don’t like them anymore? What do you think we’ve been fighting for this whole time. The ironic thing is that those who probably moved in are probably more left leaning and in more of support for policies which your politicians refuse to enact. (Higher taxes for higher earners, more safety nets, rent control, etc)

Blame the system that allows it in the first place and those who uphold that system. Blaming them just comes off as pure envy to me.
