What games do you recommend for my girlfriend?

My girlfriend has never really gamed. But she’s now forced to move less than she would like to (health problem) and she’s getting bored. I was thinking of introducing her to a game or two that we could play together. She’s not the real action game type, and seeing as she has no experience with controller/mouse and keyboard...

For puzzles, absolutely unpacking, also have seen similar friends put time into that remodel game that escapes me right now. House Fixer maybe?

It is more action, but I have had success during covid with family who was trapped at home by introducing them to Mass Effect (on story mode, the easiest setting). The story is so engrossing through the three games that they overlooked the action. If she likes big stories, I would suggest that. On keyboard and mouse it’s not the most confusing game either, pretty simple.

If you were thinking Factorio but want to do it together, check out Satisfactory. It’s a 1st person version of it that supports multiplayer, and you could set up a dedicated server. (I’m biased though, I have over 2000 hours in it and I am a mod of !satisfactory). Satisfactory is definitely less intimidating than factorio for newbies to the factory building environment, and there’s a creative factor in there too.

I’ve also had luck with people giving them portal. Portal is a great game to introduce them to not anction gameplay but helps them learn movement controls. Honestly out of the three I suggested maybe portal first and go from there. Would introduce movement, a weapon, and the second has a pretty strong story.

For anything else, what are her interests, what does she do for a living? Maybe we can put forward some more.

Very nice! I’m running the same thing with card mod!

Some nitpicks, your light buttons swap those to be left to right, then they’ll line up with the bar, or swap the header to swoop right. Same thing with the guages.

I also changed the headers to “Environmental”, “Ops”, “Engineering”, the wife loved that lol.

How did you do the graph in the bottom? Maybe there’s an update I don’t have…

@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

Nice! I didn’t know you could apply the footer to another entity card… that’s a good idea! I’ll have to change mine around. The latest HA update broke my styles though, I may have to re-add them

yeah that’s why I never get excited about this news. That’s awesome they’re working on it, but it’s in a lab, in a controlled environment, with each one costing more than I make in a year probably.

When I get excited is when they have manufacturing down and they want to start making them en masse. Something like this in a lab? Eh a decade away. They’re talking about it at their marking reviews and it’s in manufacturing? Now I’m excited

I don’t know of anyone who wants this TV show in the first place. It is too early for a reboot! It only ended 13 years ago, that’s way too soon.

I also don’t know how anyone could beat the casting of the movies. Daniel Radcliff, Rupert Grint, Emma Watson? Not to mention Julie Walters, Alan Rickman, Helena Bonham Carter… Ralph Fiennes? Maggie Smith? It was cast beautifully.

I won’t lie I always said the movies should have been a TV show, with each season being a book. However, that ship has sailed. 13 years is not long enough to justify a remake.

Eh for me it’s a lot of things. For one just roots, family and friends. Then next is work, I’d have to find a new job over there (doubtful my current one would let me work abroad), and I’d need to see if visas would let me work over there, and for how long. I would probably make less over there, but cost of living is lower too, so I’d have to do finances. Most countries don’t let you own property unless you’re a citizen, and I wouldn’t be, so I’d have to rent for a while. Path to citizenship would then be difficult, and I would have to pay taxes for both countries. Then just pure logistics of what do I do with everything here, would have to basically start all over. It’d be much easier if I was in my early 20s, but I’m nearing 40 which makes it much more difficult.

Standard Google. Make 2 competing products. See which one is successful. Force all of the other users to successful one even if there are less features. 5 years later kill off that one for another meaningless changeover.

They stopped innovating in the late 2000s. It’s all been pointless marketing rebrands since.

They want to have their payday and get out, there’s no way they’d release enough stock to let that happen. I’m sure this is some ploy to convince the most active people to keep it up so they look good.

Software does have a fun phase, where there are a ton of interesting problems that need to be solved. The green field of you can go off and build that thing that needs to be built, and timelines are vague and handwavey.

Later it becomes crunchier because there’s just less “fun”. Everything major has been built, most of the interesting problems have been solved. It’s down to fixing issues that came up, performance tuning, and getting it over the finish line. Unfortunately it’s usually a 40/60 split of fun to tedious.

This is it. His shows are overproduced for Americans, using cheap effects and dramatization for terrible reality TV. So I never watch him.

I think it’d be a lot different if I saw a version that was just what happened. Like kitchen nightmares but without all of the dramatics. That I would watch all the time. So of course they don’t make it.

God I’m tired of this backwards ass country. His entire argument is “Christian snowflakes got their feelings hurt when they were called bigots for being against gay marriage”.

Maybe because they were bigots for being against gay marriage?

Sorry their feelings got hurt, so this entire group of people can’t have rights anymore.

This country gets more frustrating when you realize that most of the issues we face right now are (at their root) because most americans have no ability to self reflect on themselves.

Why do I hate X people? Why am I afraid of this? Should I be afraid of this? Why do I feel like I should trust this person instead of that person? Why does this person’s views make me uncomfortable. …why do I feel like I need to have the biggest truck?

If Americans could self reflect on any of those we would be a very different country.

Yeah when most religion and deeply held beliefs fall apart real quick when the reason for why they’re held is “because my parents believed it”. Younger generations who are still republican usually start to realize they aren’t when asked “why are you republican” and all they can do is spout stuff their parents say. Which is why the best way to help counter their beliefs isn’t to say “it’s stupid” or “you’re wrong”, but to instead keep asking questions. “Why do you think that?” “Why do you think marriage should only be between a man and a woman?” “Why do you believe the bible claims that?” Keep asking whys and maybe they’ll start thinking

I think it more proves that no matter what founding fathers or any noble people come up with, there will always be people who corrupt those noble goals and twist them. Supreme Court was supposed to be uncorruptible. They get their position for life so they never have to worry about reelections, just do what is right for the country.

Founding fathers never thought the nominations would be bastardized around elections, or that bribery would sway judges so high up. Power always corrupts

If we think of “reddit caved” as the only condition then yes it failed. If we add in others like “content providers left” and “quality of content dropped”, then from what I read that is true. So they stained their name pretty badly, and I’m happy enough with that. And hey, it brought us here

In a funny way the spam flood has helped lemmy if anything. The maintainers are finally addressing mod tools, and a few mod bots have matured enough to be able to run. I agree, short term it’s not great, but the script kiddies over in Japan I think ended up helping lemmy more than hurting it

scrubbles,
@scrubbles@poptalk.scrubbles.tech avatar

From the admin side we’re (we being admins in general, I only admin a small instance) working on adding mod bots. From Lemmy’s side I know they’re working on adding more mod tools to the platform. It won’t be overnight, but oddly enough these kids are helping lemmy and Mastodon by showing where the gaps are, and we’ll soon have the tools to manage future attacks
