It’s only a bandaid over a gaping wound, but check out Fakespot, an extension for Firefox and Chrome. It won’t help with google play, but when browsing Amazon, BestBuy, or other retailers they use machine learning to detect duplicate/repetitive reviews, and go into reviewers’ history to determine if they are trustworthy.

I’ve seen a lot of “5 star products” get an adjusted rating of <2 because of this extension.

Depends on what you call a “whole ass train”. Many of these routes could be easily service by a 1 or 2 car DMU like the rural routes in Scotland and Wales.

I’ve used those request stops! Those sort of rural lines are exactly what we’re missing here in the states, just bouncing back and forth on the line. You can see here Americans don’t even know what they are, but they’re the perfect solution for these lines going between little towns

hot take is that I think they can… if applied well. I think about some of the shopkeepers in Skyrim or the Witcher, the background NPCs that only have 1 line. Those are characters that AI could really enhance.

However, I do not think that it means executives can start firing actors right and left. The shopkeeper in Oxenfurt would be great with AI to help, ask it things like “What’s going on in town?”. Yennifer or Dandelion would not.

Depends who you ask. Personally, I think AI is fine if used ethically, and I think that’s an ethical case - as long as the voice actor is compensated for their voice.

I’ve done a good chunk, but I haven’t found a good source for tape drives. Mine I bought second hand and it overheats and I found that it actually fails it’s testing, so be extremely weary on buying them. I did LTO-8, but I’ve been waiting for years now for them to drop in price. (I probably did the same comparisons as you, TB/$ pricing).

The biggest thing is to make sure you support LTFS. I’ve tried multiple softwares, even down to tar, but LTFS will make your life simpler. It acts as a simple mount in linux, you just copy and paste.

Tapes themselves are all pretty much the same. I buy them new, never used, just like HDDs, and they’re cheap enough that who cares. Note that the compressed sizing will never be reached. Remember that most ISOs are already compressed, and most of your data is already compressed, you can’t compress compressed data, so it’s pretty much a straight shot.

Tape can be a great option, I keep mine in a safety deposit box, fully encrypted. However getting it all set up is a pain in the ass. If you find a good drive at a good price, let me know.

I used an LSI 8i SAS card, with a standard SAS cable to my internal SAS tape drive. Then I just used plain ubuntu to get it up and running. The LSI cards are my go-to for anything SAS, used them for 10 years and never had a single one fail.

In my experience? Minimal. Although when you buy a single drive for over $1k you’re also not super into cracking it open and repairing things. From what I can tell, it’s like a blu-ray drive, but more complex, and more delicate. Not to mention since it’s tape you technically need a clean room, because dust can fuck up the heads.

If I could source decent drives for less than 10 grand I’d be a huge supporter of it, but us pro-sumers are pretty much left with ebay.

After hating Ubisoft for months because of all of this, I see people fawning over the new Assassins creed that was just announced, as if that isn’t going to be the exact same, overpriced, boring sorry, empty world game. This one will be different!

I will probably get it - in 2 years when it’s priced at 10 dollars, and I’ll know they will take it away from me. I will basically rent it for 10 dollars. How anyone is gleeful about paying full price for an Ubisoft game is beyond me.

Today’s word of the day - Miscommunication!

I think she thought you took “Adventure Buddies” as FWB, and then when you tried to explain yourself she saw it as backpeddling. Weird to use a term like that, I would usually call them “friends”. Anyway escalation, escalation, then over.

I get what you were trying to say, but it did come off as a bit oversexual. You didn’t mean it, don’t beat yourself up over it, just take it as a learning experience. Saying something outright like “FWB” to me comes off as “They have sex on the mind.” Rewording it to “I get it, I’ve tried the more casual thing and I think I’m looking for something more serious. Sounds like you aren’t, I get it, I’ve been through the same. If you do become ready, I’m always happy to meet for coffee”. And that’s it, no more follow ups, that’s the end of the conversation.

She isn’t innocent either, but I think she had her guard up and so she was in a mindset of taking things negatively. Just next time with the next person just keep it light, chill. Understanding, but yeah steer away anything that might come off as you’re trying to get in their pants. HR’s favorite phrase is “Intent is Irrelevant”, if they took it that way, then you probably should reflect on why they took it that way.

Last thing, the last message is very passive aggressive, and I know you were mad, but phrases like “You are” and “I’m sorry you feel that way” are very confrontational. A better closing would have been a simple “I’m sorry, I think we had a miscommunication, I apologize if what I said came out wrong.” “I’m sorry”, “I think”, “I apologize” instead of you

Don’t think of what she’s reading as she knows you, but think about the dozens of skeezy guys that have come before you, and the shitty tricks they’ve tried to pull from her. It’s shitty, but a lot of women have their guard up immediately assuming that guys are just trying to get in their pants. I guarantee some sleezebag has tried saying “Oh no way I have no interest of being FWB. Unless you would be interested, hahaha jkjkjk but really?”

It’s mental exhaustion. I wouldn’t take seeming uncaring about it, I know personally it’s just so much bad happening that if I forced myself to pay attention to it all I’d collapse in a pile of anxiety. I don’t like anything you posted, but I wouldn’t be able to carry on myself if I didn’t look the other way on some of it.

Exactly, it’s naiive to think that because someone isn’t actively doing something means they don’t care. It’s great to remind them, even try to keep it in their heads, but never assume they just don’t care until they prove otherwise.

When Russia invaded Ukraine, I was having full-on panic attacks. I could barely sleep, I lost weight, it was bad. I got help, and I learned how I just can’t think about the entirety of the world. Exactly what you said - vote, call my senators/congressmen, but that once I’ve done what I can then I have to be content with that, that’s all I can do. What I’ve started doing is becoming more vocal and active in my local community on a few issues, and that has brought me a lot of peace and content, it’s something I can actively do to make people’s lives better.
