Have any #phonetics and specifically vocal production and perception ppl studied the donald duck voice, bc its like a stunning example of perceptual degeneracy with acoustic variability. Those phonemes are nothing like normal speech and are produced totally differently too
@jonny A presentation of decompression injury: air gets trapped in the lungs during ascent/surfacing, and escapes into the thoracic cavity. It goes up the trachea and exerts pressure on the vocal chords. Caused either by holding breath during ascent (extremely dangerous in SCUBA diving), or due to some preexisting problem with the lungs. I was present a long time ago when an ex-smoker had the injury with "Donald Duck symptom" (luckily, he didn't have embolism).
@jonny I'm trying to find some papers/medical reports on it... The things I found mention chest pain, palpable air bubbles behind the clavicula etc, but don't mention the (very noticeable) voice change. Could be something specifically diver related (who spend time immersed with their head up), and not happening in cases where people are in bed or simply not immersed.
My boyfriend got a very expensive education and knows multiple people who were “inconvenient” enough for their families that they were INSTITUTIONALIZED AGAINST THEIR WILL. Is this a thing rich people are still doing? And there’s no recourse? He basically shrugged like this is normal. Is this normal??
I've reached out to Meta/Threads devs regarding Nodeinfo and stats numbers for https://FediDB.org, unfortunately their legal dept rejected this.
I will use estimated numbers with the hope they will see this and have justification for reporting accurate stats.
Even though I have my own reservations regarding Meta (and how they've treated Pixelfed), putting my ego aside for the benefit of the fediverse is required when running an essential fedi service like FediDB.
If you're not from the US and want to travel here. Don't.
I thought as a (German and white) visitor I'm gonna be fine.
Border and customs protection took my phone, forced me to unlock it and stole god knows what data from it. The agent was powertripping and made sure to let me know that I am powerless and he can just send me home or do godknowswhat to me.
He directly said "if you're annoying I'm just sending you home".
Apparently my trans ass was part of a "random search". Lol.
I'm fine now and with Lexi luckily. I don't know what kind of malware is on my phone, or what they took from it. I've been crying all throughout my connecting flight.
This place is a dystopian shithole. Please don't go here.
#TheGlobalJigsaw has an episode lined up on the conflict in #Sudan , the world's largest current humanitarian crisis and its impact on the media - it will drop on our feed shortly before the war's anniversary, please check here:
it's honestly really impressive that my absurdly, almost indefensibly low bar of "do not go out of your way to proactively enable the military contractors of the most powerful empire in the world" is met with:
whining from overpaid bay area pieces of shit like dtolnay
whining and inaction from the foundation board of everyone's fave os nixos
whining and inaction from the foundation of everyone's fave language rust
"no, we can't do better" from ostensible community leaders
@GossiTheDog Counterpoint: it's their fault, because they view every problem as a certain quantification of money to be gained or lost. And the big power game is who has the power to spend company's money. So they will focus on the expense, and the person in charge to approve it.
@jonny Hey Jonny! Would you be willing to share some advice on a very basic experimental design, for a student project? We wish to explore if energy/high-sugar/carbonated drinks impact/reduce student reaction times (measured with Backyard Brains Muscle Spiker + Reaction Timer). The project is aimed to be an exercise in experimental design (neurophysiology is just the research context). The general idea is to measure the reaction times of volunteers before and after consuming the drink. 1/2
@jonny We can play with drink selection - Red Bull, sugar-free Red Bull, a local energy drink ("Guarana"), maybe also with a sugar-free variety, Coca Cola, Coca Cola Zero, and local soda without caffeine ("Kokta" + sugar-free "Kokta"). I was thinking in lieu of factorial design and repeated measures ANOVA. We need to work out the details: do we test each volunteer for each drink? Are we bound to just one test a day, per volunteer? Do we measure baseline reaction times only once per volunteer?
@jonny I'm the teacher, but I would like to approach the project with student mindset (discuss the issues and ask for advice, not just micromanage my students and tell them "the right way" to do stuff).
