With the #3DS online services being shut down in April 2024, are there any can't-miss online gaming experiences to be had on the platform? It's a shame that this is happening, but at the same time most of my experience with the handheld has been in single player or local multiplayer games.

Outside of trading and battling Pokémon, I'm genuinely curious what (if anything) I would regret missing out on in the future.

Today's the last day of the autumn sale! Did anyone pick up anything good? Any last minute recommendations?

I always look forward to checking out this hidden gems thread, you can count on finding some good stuff to dig through. Sorry if it's a cardinal sin to post a reddit link on here! 😬

I think I'm finally ready to share my website. Been working on this off & on for over a month, it's just a simplistic web portal-type thing for all the stuff I've put out on the internet.

This is my first time making a website from scratch, so I'll likely update the design as I learn better ways of doing things. I'm in love with the old web ethos on Neocities, it encouraged me to finally make the jump!

@jake4480 Your web portal is pretty cool too, seems like a lot of handy resources there. I'll have to dig into it when I can sit down on the computer. I liked making this kind of site because it's an excuse to get me to make/share more stuff in my free time without any restrictions. The old web still has merit for free expression that you can't really get on the contemporary attention economy sites, at least not in the same way

I have a 14 year old Windows 7 (32 bit) machine on my desk here that I use mostly as a jukebox as I work (there is 50GB+ of music files on it).

Since most support and updates for anything Windows 7 is pretty much dead now (including Chrome, not that I use that anyway) and Steam officially won't work on Windows 7 in 47 days, today is the day I uninstall the 16 Steam games I had on here.

Here are all 16 great games that are currently on it, but that won't be in a few minutes. Shootemups, fps, rpgs, a simulator, and Rogue, of course.

RIP Steam on Windows 7 (in 47 days). End of an era.

@jake4480 Windows 7 was the last Microsoft OS that I liked using. I am sad.

On the positive side, I imagine all of these games should work under Proton should you choose to migrate to a Linux distro!

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 I totally recommend it, was one of the best decisions I made for many of my older computers. It makes tinkering feel like a fun adventure again.

If you still want to stick with Windows 7, you may want to look into which Steam games can be run DRM free without the client. I've been playing Dungeons of Dredmor lately and I realized this week, to my delight, that it runs perfectly on my old Windows XP machine!

Well, after tinkering with for a while, my impressions:

The desktop site is janky & soulless, better on mobile. Half of the userbase seems to have left months ago.

The home feed is decent with replies disabled. Their alternatives aren't bad.

It just doesn't hold a candle to what has to offer, user experience or community-wise. No silly invite codes needed!

Disappointing that this was where so many migrated to, "cool kids club" ain't what it's cracked up to be.

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@danjac Well put, that's exactly the feel I got from it. It was frustrating to hear about it months ago but be stuck on the outside. I just happened to see somebody sharing a bunch of codes so I thought I'd try out of curiosity. I don't think people are missing much for now

After configuring Windows 11 on a handful of computers at work, I've learned definitively that I want Microsoft's tendrils as far away from my home machines as possible in the near future.

Windows 10 was a nuisance, but I learned to live with it and even grew to appreciate some aspects of it. Windows 11 is a crime against humanity. Forcing people to "upgrade" to this version by 2025 is a joke.

Working with computers used to be fun. What happened?

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@azonenberg Bingo. I'm looking forward to a Linux future as well, but I fear much of the general public will be averse to this change for various reasons and continue on as usual through inertia.

I can help my friends and family get acquainted with Linux, but my sphere of influence is small. Many people are going to slip through the cracks, unfortunately 🙄

Here's my collection of turn-of-the-millennium computers, either gotten second hand or literally rescued from the garbage. Since 2023 marked the 25 year anniversary of Windows 98, my goal is to turn one of these into my ultimate retro machine that plays all my childhood computer games.

Two out of these three have non-functional hard drives, so my first step is to choose one, add a compact flash reader and see if I can get Windows 98 installed!

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

Got the failed hard drive out of one of the Compaq Presarios, just look at this big hulking boy. LOOK AT HIM

Size comparison between old hard drive and new compact flash card. We've come a long way

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

Welp, already hit a snag on this project, and it's a doozy. Appears my CF card cannot be easily set as a fixed disk (if at all) so the retro computer won't recognize it as a valid hard drive to install on.

I'll either have to find a way to convert the card from removable to fixed, wait until I can order a new CF card/storage method, or repurpose the only IDE drive I have left and cross my fingers that it doesn't fail too. Didn't think I'd reach headache territory so soon!

#retrocomputing

Attempted to use fdisk on the Windows 98 command prompt "No fixed disks present."

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@penguin42 It's a Sandisk Extreme 32gb card that I ordered this year. At least one person in the Amazon reviews mentioned it wasn't suitable for a retro computer build, I should have probably read further before ordering 🙄

I found this page that mentions Sandisk Extreme cards specifically and this "ATCFWCHG.COM" utility that can be used. https://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/CompactFlash_boot_drive

I'm just going off what info I've been able to find online, never done this process before. Is 32gb too large?

Here's my collection!

The purple Game Boy Color was my first ever game system, followed by the purple and then the blue SP. The original DMG needs some repairs and replacement parts, it was a garage sale pickup years ago.

I use the a lot nowadays, but I still try to make time for the . The mini handhelds can be a nice change of pace as well! Do you still like old school handhelds? Let me know!

rootcompute,
@rootcompute@mastodon.social avatar

@jake4480 You've got a great taste in portables! All the best generations of Nintendo handhelds covered. I'd be interested in the Playdate too, cool to see all the original games being made for it and that it's not a complete blatant nostalgia cash grab, seems to actually have some substance to it
