Looking at some designs of old websites, I'm impressed by how much difference texture can make. I've been putting gradients on everything because lets me, and I can also make triangle and simple shapes, but I can't create, for example, polka dots or carpet patterns in pure CSS. I'm struggling to make actual image files to use in my . So far I made a 4x4 dot pattern and I think it made a previously pure white background much better.

What platforms were used in the 80s up to about 1993 or 1994 for Internet servers? It can be , , , , the , or anything else that was on the Internet in that era.

My research indicates Solaris was very popular for web servers until Linux took over, and so I suspect it (and SunOS before it) was very popular for the Internet in general, but I'd like to hear from anyone with this sort of experience.

I .

Tired of lazy loading. Tired of spinners. Tired of animations. Tired of infinite scrolling. Tired of auto-playing videos. Tired of short articles being replaced by videos. Tired of every site having a chatbot in the corner. Tired of full page overlays reminding me to pay or subscribe to a newsletter.

I added a directory section to my website for links to other people's sites as well as handy resources and other fun things on the internet that I had bookmarked.

If we're mutuals on here and I somehow missed your site, get in touch with me if you want it added to the directory. I prefer non-social media/non-commercial links on this list; check out Neocities if you want to make a free DIY website, or consider starting a blog!

So I'm going to assume Netlify isn't going to suddenly charge me the cost of a small house if something goes awry and stick with them for the time being.

Also ooo, they're launching a new shiny. Blobs? Can I finally code up a working hit counter?

At all the coders, what tools and frameworks do you use for coding your ?

I'm having a hard time finding tools and frameworks that works without admin access to a server, which I don't have on my webspace - only, style.

This is why everyone should have a website:

"The old web was all about having your own place on the web, lovingly crafting your homepage and tending to it over time, filling it with whatever we felt was interesting."

rn I'm doing a lot of research on early internet fandom for my bachelor thesis and since I was born after the turn of the millennium it's making me wonder how it must have been to be a fan on the internet when Usenet and ICQ/IRC/AIM and GeoCities were still a thing. It really feels like having some kind of lost nostalgia, I've only lived to see early facebook, msn and flipnote as my early internet interactions.
If you were a fan on the internet in the late 90's / early 00's, or know someone that was, please hit me up!! I'd love to have a chat about it!!

I think I'm finally ready to share my website. Been working on this off & on for over a month, it's just a simplistic web portal-type thing for all the stuff I've put out on the internet.

This is my first time making a website from scratch, so I'll likely update the design as I learn better ways of doing things. I'm in love with the old web ethos on Neocities, it encouraged me to finally make the jump!

Added an Under Construction gif to my Guest Book page so it has that final classic touch.

Next step is a more proper Webring. The 'Friends' wordpress plugin is a fully fledged webring with fediverse functionality, but it doesn't express itself well to visitors. I'll have to explain it on a nice page to link ppl.

Sometimes I really miss the structure old forums had. Not just the way they organised conversations but also how each website had a forum and that the website was the main landing page and the forum was a fun side activity.
