(Sharing this because it keeps coming up amongst my friends that don't work out).

I am not getting bigger! I'm getting smaller! It's an optical illusion. When I am at my strongest, I am at my biggest, but I don't look it. When I look my strongest I am at my smallest and weakest.🙂🙃

My shoulders are freakishly wide. That's bone structure, not muscle. When I have high bodyfat, my waist is as wide as my shoulders. Lower bodyfat, my waist is narrower than my shoulders, and my traps look steeper

Mekka Okereke standing up, giving a Tech talk. In this picture his shoulders are wider than his waist.
A simple geometric illustration of human composition. A blue trapezoid that is wider at the top than the bottom represents the shoulder to waist ratio. Behind it a darker blue trapezoid that is wider at the bottom represents the obliques. A darker blue triangle represents the traps. Behind these shapes is a large Gray trapezoid that is wider at the bottom than the top. A gray circle segment sits behind the triangle that represents the traps. The overall silhouette looks like the profile of a loaf of bread. There is no v taper

It's wild how, "Car manufacturers elected to electrify the premium and luxury segments of their product lineup and interest rates are sky high," gets turned into, "people don't want electric cars," in the media.

    quigs,

@bynkii @mike True, but EVs have fewer parts to break, so theoretically there’s less the average DIYer would want to fix.

I replaced my serpentine belt and MAP sensor on my (BMW) Mini Cooper, but I’m not planning to replace the transmission or clutch by myself any time soon.

I’ll replace a bumper sensor or coolant pump on the Bolt, but I’m taking it to the dealer/theoretical EV repair shop to get the motor serviced.

    quigs,

@bynkii @mike Also have you tried to DIY repair any modern ICE vehicle made after 2020? It’s a nightmare. I’ve had to buy $500 in BMW specialized tools to repair a 2006 Mini Cooper over the last 8 years. The newer stuff is even worse/more proprietary.

The Taylor Swift harassment campaign on X is a warning. These same tools are already being used to harass average people across lots of platforms, and the response from tech companies and lawmakers hasn't been nearly good enough https://www.platformer.news/taylor-swift-deepfake-nudes-x/

I bought an EV and boy do they like to gaslight you. Blaming me for 97 miles of reduced range largely due to my “technique” which was driving in the winter with cruise control set to 60mph and driving on mostly flat terrain with the heater off.

GM really ought to update their cars software for winter awareness like many other manufacturers have done.

Eric Topol OpEd: Opinion: “The U.S. is facing the biggest COVID wave since Omicron. Why are we still playing make-believe?”
I appreciate his concern, but in Sept 2021, he decried people like me for “pervasive pessimism.” Then, amid the Omicron surge, I asked if he regretted that, and he blocked me. Like so many public health experts, if he'd maintained a cautious stance rather than leaping so quickly to optimism, it's possible more people would've remained careful. https://www.latimes.com/opinion/story/2024-01-04/covid-2024-flu-virus-vaccine

    quigs,

@augieray He blocked me too. No clue why. 🤷‍♂️

I still follow his account using RSS in my feed reader.

    quigs,

@augieray That is so weird that you would get blocked for a sane question. I mean, maybe it’s an ignorant question (playing devil’s advocate here) but if you don’t have patience for legitimate ignorance, why have a platform?

Came across this fediverse connector from Ghost CMS to Mastodon, by @quigs. I’m interested in somehow connecting my newsletter at Cybercultural.com (currently on Substack) to the fediverse. Not immediately, but am looking into feasibility. Quigs, are you still working on this project? https://forum.ghost.org/t/i-wrote-a-mastodon-fediverse-activitypub-integration-for-ghost/37819

@ricmac I am still working on this project! Started a new job a few months ago that has been keeping me busy, but I’ve been slowly slogging away at writing unit tests to ensure it behaves correctly and adding some more customization options.

Just made reservations for a trip in April to see the total solar eclipse. I've seen partial eclipses before, and it's been a bucket-list item to see a total eclipse. Now, I have five months of hoping for nice weather to look forward to! No spring showers on April 8, please!

It's frustrating to be "the #COVID19 guy" when everyone should be COVID-aware. I had a friend ask if we could get together for the holidays on December 16. I said sure, if they could be safe for the week beforehand and wouldn't mind socializing at our home. He declined. 😢

This is not the life I expected in my 60s. I expected concerts, professional public speaking, and fun events. But I refuse to risk my life or the lives of people I love. I'll make the best of what this world sensibly allows.

    quigs,

@augieray I don’t understand why it’s so hard to be safe for a week beforehand.

Put on a mask, avoid crowds. It’s not like you’re requesting he get a booster shot like people were doing in 2021.

I feel sorry for all the news companies that launched research for stories on “Who is Tom Emmer?” only to have him drop out of the race for Speaker in four hours.

Conservatives on both sides of the Atlantic are getting effective at creating new measures of time! A Scaramucci (or Mooch) is 11 days. A Liz Truss is 44 days. And now an Emmer is four hours! (“Man, it's only 1 pm? I have a whole Emmer before I can kick off from work!”)

    quigs,

@augieray Don’t forget that a “Liz Truss” is also shorter than a “head of lettuce”. Many measurement units to choose from these days!

ME: dang, #Exercism is such a slick site, including their signup process (not just "what are your pronouns" but like, an extremely well done way of entering them too), and their CLI tool.

ME: ok time to download their C hello world, just for fun

THEIR C HELLO WORLD EXERCISE: spells Makefile with a lowercase ‘m’

ME: immediately uninstalls their client and deletes his account

(not really doing that, but wow. I'm not sure I've /ever/ seen a lowercase-m Makefile before! 🤯)

    quigs,

@bitprophet @BajoranEngineer It’s nice to see that the co-founder of agile is just as opinionated and wrong about code as agile is about software development. This kind of explains a lot for me. 👏
