Kevin Moonlight just released a video demonstrating his Pi Pico-based PCMCIA card that can emulate NE2000 over Wi-Fi, serial port, and Sound Blaster for retro laptops, handhelds, and other computers. He's gauging interest in the project for a future build, so if you're interested in one there's a link in the description to a form.
Kevin is great, he was responsible for the bulk of the SoundBlaster DSP support that was just released on #PicoGUS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YoJ12leojwo

I went to buy this weird luggable 486 PC with Trinitron monitor and the seller also had a Compaq Portable so I had to just get it too. As soon as I opened each one up to take photos, my cat Oscar decided they were his and jumped on top of them.

The same cat sitting on top of a different luggable PC, this time a Compaq Portable. He is also looking down at it.

@thomasfuchs There's not much about these cases out on the net but I did find this vcfed forum post about them (including some posts by @vwestlife ): https://forum.vcfed.org/index.php?threads/looking-for-very-special-portable-pc-with-color-monitor.80071/ It looks like they were sold as standalone cases or used in white label builds. This one has a logo saying APR and a manufacturer label saying "America Portable Research". The CRT looks original, no idea about the motherboard until I figure a way inside without breaking any plastics. There are no external screws...

The guy who found the xz vuln masto bio reads (paraphrasing) “this account is for tech, not politics” and the cause of the vuln is maintainer burnout that could be avoided if not for corporate greed. But you do you. ✌️

[update: dear reply guys, the fact that he has a separate account for politics makes this worse, not better]

@janl he does have a separate acct for politics at least

The "Book386" (a Hand386 in the Book8088 case) that I've long wanted was just released (called the Pocket 386)! https://www.aliexpress.us/item/3256805356267711.html

This is a big one! After being teased for a long time, #PicoGUS now supports Sound Blaster 2.0! https://github.com/polpo/picogus/releases/tag/v1.2.0

I came in this morning after being out for a week and had to close about 150 warning dialogs in macOS.

It's a shame no one gives a fuck about what happens in a UI when shit goes wrong.

(I ended up writing a script to click and close them all.)

polpo,
@polpo@bitbang.social avatar

@rasterweb if you hadn't already written a script, I'd point you to the one I use to clear them on mine. They really pile up when programming hundreds of PicoGUS units.

#PicoGUS firmware v1.1.0 is released and is avaiable at https://github.com/polpo/picogus/releases/tag/v1.1.0 !

This release fixes a tricky hardware bug that affects ~10% of PCM510xA DAC chips that results in silent audio at 22.05kHz sampling rate.
It also adds an experimental mode that runs the GUS emulation at fixed 44.1kHz, similar to an Interwave (experimental because it's not perfect in all titles – for example it stutters in Doom).

Can’t wait to use the new, high-performance network software included with this Macintosh LC Ethernet card to get this Performa 400 online as my new #GlobalTalk router

polpo,
@polpo@bitbang.social avatar

Being a proper piece of network routing equipment, the Performa is now perched on top of the network rack. The polpo zone is now online 24/7 #GlobalTalk

Not sure why it took me so long to realize I could browse #GlobalTalk on my iMac G4 running MacOS 9.2. Much more screen real estate than the SE/30 (which is still being the router) 😅

admitting defeat after not being able to write the Apple Internet Router disks no matter what I try. DiskDup or DiskCopy just can't recognize them. I probably should try setting things up in an emulator then putting the image on my SE/30. #GlobalTalk

It amazes me that in the year 2024, you can still buy brand new sockets for a Socket 7 CPU or 68030, 30-pin SIMM sockets, or the 64-pin SIMM socket that the SE/30 used for its ROM

lema.org is paid for until 2031 . Didn’t remember that but it makes sense. It was a costly domain (got it for myself as birthday gift at a moment I had more money than sense). Now that I own it losing it by inadvertence would be quite stupid.

polpo,
@polpo@bitbang.social avatar

@santiago when I first registered polpo.org in 1999, I laughed at the option to register it for up to 10 years. I thought to myself there'd be no way domain names would still be around in 2009!

Tonight I’m looking at #PicoGUS boards that failed my initial QA. This chip in the center had bent legs, preventing it from being soldered correctly. You can see how much higher up it is compared to the others around it.
