I mostly post about #gamedev and #indiehackers as that’s related to my career.
But I am also interested in gardening, nature, and all sorts of crafting (woodworking, sewing, 3D printing, painting etc.)

🇨🇦For those interested, finally, Part 3 of my series is done. Parts 1, 2 are linked in Part 3 but just in case, I'm linking here too.

This is for anyone interested in why, how we managed to get permanent residency.

Everyone else, ignore, although you may find it interesting regardless.

@GottaLaff Congrats on getting everything sorted and PR!

Moved here quite a few years ago and is now a reminder I should start that citizenship application…

Great time to move too, summer might be starting this week? Or maybe I’ve jinxed it now…

What would a fediverse forum look like to you?

I know there are some out there, but I'm getting mixed signals about whether it's working or not. Anyone tried them?

leroy, to fediverse
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

What is your preference of forum thread?

Would love to hear your reasoning why!
Personally, I like the possibility of tangents in Reddit BUT I think I prefer the focus of staying on topic from a single thread.

How does everyone on indiehackers.social feel about creating a live document about what to do after creating your account?

Things I would have loved to know when starting out on

a. Get a client that supports following hashtags
b. Follow tags e.g.
c. Follow other local feeds based on interest (e.g. gardening, open source, gamedev)

I assume your intro message is automated @simeon , maybe it could include a link to this ‘First Steps’ document?

Well, I've dived into a new hobby again. #3DPrinting !

I got myself a Bambu Lab A1 mini, and I am having so much freaking fun.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@tylermumford just regular Bambu Basic PLA. Which apparently is fine (for indoor pots). BUT I’m still going to paint/seal it partly for aesthetics and partly because of the design of the pot.

For pushing the 0.2mm nozzle, here is an example of some miniatures and terrain I printed (and painted) https://indiehackers.social/@leroy/112405967643435996

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@tylermumford Enjoy! I’m loving mine (currently printing a plant pot in a size we haven’t been able to find).

The out-of-the-box experience has been mind blowing, and the detail it can manage is far beyond what I expected.

Forget all the numbers and blah blah blah... if someone says Carbon taxes are the reason gas prices are high just say this!

“Gas price trends in the US & Canada are identical. Therefore it is not Canadian taxation policy that drives the trend.”

Thanks for the TED talk @BarryCooke ! 😂

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@chris @BarryCooke could gas prices be going up here purely because it allows them to point out this tax. Therefore pushing people to vote conservative, resulting in more freedoms and tax cuts to oil companies 🤔

Being very used to my Mastodon feed now makes it very evident how ad-heavy other platforms are.

It’s refreshing to only see posts that I made a conscious effort to see. And it’s bonkers that it’s a rare concept.

I am very excited to announce a very silly game!

Play a game by wiggling your eyebrows! Dodge storm clouds, save baby birds, and compete against your friends and family in Highbrow!

This game has been bouncing around my head for a long while, and I have experimented with all sorts of mechanics and art styles. After finally finding the fit, I’m ready to release it into the world.

All. For. Free.

No ads. No tracking. No data collection.

Hmm... Is that normal? Huge raccoon is broad daylight at our neighbour's 😳

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@stephanie I have seen families migrate during the day. Unsure if it’s because their territory was disrupted (construction?) or potentially a rival raccoon.

Unfortunately the babies are vulnerable during the day ☹️

Truly very happy that Nancy Drew: Mystery Of The Seven Keys is released!
I spent a large portion of last year working on it, and I’m excited to see how all the fans will receive it.

Hoping to catch some of you streamers solve the puzzles, the HeR team really stumped me with some of them!

@vintprox Looks great!! Now you just need to customize the lock screen to “It’s locked”

Nature themed #FollowFriday time! 🌿

If you want to add some brightness to your feed, I highly recommend following #Bloomscrolling

If you’re wanting more greenery, or are just a fan of trees, there is #ThickTrunkTuesday

Finally, for the wilder side of you, I recommend #Wildflowers

Unsure how to follow tags? Ask away and I’m sure people will help, I’m using a client where I can follow tags and the posts appear in my home feed.

Two year offer with TELUS ended, so they wanted to charge us $170 a month just for internet???
Their offer online is $80 for better speeds than what we currently have.

So we have to waste an hour calling them, threaten to leave, to be offered $75 and better speeds to stick around.

How many people are not doing this and providing $100 of pure profit to them (they are still profiting at $75 from us).

Cannot wait for the next merger to complete the monopoly 🙄

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@WTL big benefit of WFH. Leave it on speaker on your desk while doing that 1 hour wait.

This why they want us back in offices isn’t it 🤔

@djlink people should instead be filing for account/data deletions surely?

Not following through with that would result in massive fines if it’s at a large scale

It’s interesting to see the contrast in messaging of #xr between Apple and Meta. Meta has a very social focus whereas Apple has a more solitary focus.

I’m sure more people will meet in XR over time. But right now adoption is low and most people aren’t used to it yet. I think Apple avoided a lot of ridicule or skepticism by positioning themselves in this way.

I'm trying out Ice Cubes on macOS. Anyone have any tips?
One peeve so far is that images display at some huge resolution, only allowing me to see one post at a time. Should love for posts to take up less screen space overall.

BUT the app sure feels nice and more responsive than some web clients I have been using!

leroy, to opensource
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

Woohoo! My first open source contribution is out in the wild.
If you are using @IceCubesApp you can now go to Settings/Content Settings and enable the Require Alt Text to Post feature.

If you attempt to post media without alt text you get this lovely error!

Here is an article on writing quality alt text: https://accessibility.huit.harvard.edu/describe-content-images

#OpenSource #Accessibility

MichaelPorter, to random
@MichaelPorter@ottawa.place avatar

Folks, the alt-text efforts seem to be diminishing. I see a lot of stuff that I'd like to boost, but I've now been properly trained to expect alt-text on pictures (good, descriptive stuff that stands in for the image).

I'm not being pushy, just trying to be considerate of the Mastodon community that has trouble with images. I tend to unfollow accounts that post images without alt text - Not as a punitive thing, but to reduce my temptation to boost them.

leroy,
@leroy@indiehackers.social avatar

@MichaelPorter shameless self-plug here. But this feature should be in all mastodon clients and enabled by default:

https://indiehackers.social/@leroy/111813329231666691

TLDR: The app spits out an error “Alt-text not included” and doesn’t let you post. The only override is to go into settings to disable the feature entirely because a simple “not this time” button would get abused.

Blown away by my little $400 FDM printer.
Models by BriteMinis. Terrain by Dungeon Blocks. I used GW paints. Printed using a Bambu Lab A1 Mini.

Designed a little scenario of a goblin mob raiding an inn. The player characters start off a little drunk before sobering up. Hoping I can run this adventure (with a custom ruleset) in the coming weeks.

Every so often I dip my toe back into mobile gaming to try of find some gems. However, I find it so difficult to find the actual good games. The ones featured on stores tend to be the top grossing (which has nothing to do with quality) and websites also just push whatever is popular rather than thoughtful reviews (in general).

Does anyone know any websites that truly review mobile games and specifically the more interesting ones?

I’ve been wanting to try interesting takes on the Match3 RPG…

This weekend I saw some nice art on display in a café. Unfortunately I forgot to take note of the name.

So I tried to find the artist on Instagram via the search function.

I didn’t know IG have replaced their search (which would show an endless list of related accounts) with their AI ‘helper’.

Instead of taking ~2 seconds, it now took ~10 seconds to get a result.
