This is extra #meta, but I’ve noticed since coming back to masto last year that when I get a string of rapid-fire, extra-long replies from someone with a big char limit, I find them difficult to process.

I thought at first it was just length, but some people write long replies that come in more slowly, and those are usually easy to work with. I think it’s that most very long, very fast responses are just less organized, which pushes more cognitive load to the reader. Obvious, in retrospect!

@kissane@mas.to avatar

Tl;dr: Long can be fine but generally I appreciate the discipline constraints encourage.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@LALegault Sometimes? I’m not sure that’s true across the board. I suspect many forces at work.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@LALegault Yeah, I think the effect can be antisocial, I just don’t think it’s always because of an intent to lecture. All kinds of brains and social norms crashing into each other here.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@FeralRobots @LALegault There’s also a big contextual component, I think. Conversational momentum within a group is a thing ~we understand offline.

I think most of my own cognitive overhead when I see seven or eight very long replies in a row is figuring out if there’s actually a question or something else in there that needs a response vs lecturing vs venting.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@IDIC My app does that! But then I’m manually opening each of eight loooong replies in a thread and trying to stick them together with my brain.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@Timi @LALegault My post was just about finding strings of long replies (more than one or two very long ones in a row) quite hard to understand and contextualize. I’m not ascribing intent! Just having trouble following some inbound comments.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@LALegault @FeralRobots Oh not by nature lol it’s just usually required for my work

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@fraying You know, I find that I don’t mind it with initial posts. But in the replies it gets weird fast unless people are pretty careful.

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@qkslvrwolf People used to do this on Twitter sometimes—I feel like the challenge is that the best bite-sized writing isn’t necessarily going to sum up to the best longer-form prose.

US covid shot delays pushing out into the second or third month of the school year + zoom feeding us all into the LLM beast with no opt-out sure feels like ratcheting up the tension in fun new ways

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@donw I think matters a lot to the high-risk teachers and staff (and parents) trying to avoid severe illness and long covid, both of which seem to be pretty sharply reduced for many months after a fresh shot, even after infection protection drops.

Ventilation is a separate disaster, though. I hope families who can afford to keep offering HEPAs to teachers for classroom use, and pushing for fresh air.

@oliphant Hey, I just got back from a week off and saw your Universeodon post, and had one clarification, since you’re quoting me in it: I followed the defed and Meta conversations pretty closely, and I’ve never taken issue with anything Art’s done. I thought (and said at the time) that Stux’s defed was a mistake, and it did play a role in my move, balanced against my good experience on his instance. +

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@oliphant The inter-server “beef” in my post refers to the whole history w/r/t Meta meetings and defeds, and I’d prefer that my imprecise use of the term weren’t interpreted as some kind of implicit blame of Welshpixie. I’m trying to be clear without feeding any fires, but apparently not quite succeeding.

@kissane are you using a modified Blog theme on Blot for your website? I’m having hell adding in my own typefaces and sadly have been unable to puzzle it out. Could you share your static json.package typeface entries, before they’re mangled / published ?

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@matdotcx Yeah, I’m not at a computer rn, but I just dropped typefaces I own into one of the asset folders in my blot dropbox directory and used CSS to call them—though I did it clumsily and haven’t fixed it yet. I modified the theme in several ways, most visible in the CSS file.

Lmk if I’m not understanding your question!

hilarious piece of UX cruelty: if someone you follow here manually quote-posts someone who has blocked you and you’re using an app that displays quoted posts inline (Ivory, Mona, etc) …you see the Forbidden Posts, but then when you try to star or bookmark them, you get an error until you finally, belatedly figure it out 💀

don’t get me wrong: blocking is wonderful, more people should block me! but I probably won’t manually QP/QT anymore now that I’ve seen the security hole it creates, yikes

@inquiline @cricketcrocker it's one of the things that keeps me mostly using the web interface, tbh

Twitter/X has failed to send out payments to people who signed up for ad revenue sharing because the number of people who signed up “exceeded their expectations.”

This was the most predictable outcome of this misadventure. Elon who has failed to pay Twitter’s rent, employee severance or Google Cloud bill would suddenly have lots of money to pay users for tweeting? Yeah, right.

This week, I went over to Bluesky and asked people who'd left Mastodon why they left, and lots of people told me. I grabbed the replies and crunched them and wrote up a summary. I think it's really interesting and often kind of wrenching.

I migrated servers last week and boy did I develop some strong opinions about migration and the as-yet only semi-fulfilled promise of account portability.

If you're thinking about moving instances—or you'd like to know yet more about my dreams for better networks—here's a post you might want to read:

kissane,
@kissane@mas.to avatar

@_Birdie_ I’m back! I would be a bit shocked if these issues were resolved quickly, myself. If I felt like moving, I’d move, but first I would bookmark and screenshot all my DMs and important followers-only replies, which is obviously a bit of a headache.
