This might be the worst bathroom sink user interface I’ve encountered in a long time.

After some experimentation I discovered that they are, left to right, soap, water, and air dry. Or at least they’re supposed to be. The soap one didn’t motion trigger consistently and also was possibly empty.

Name an operation in #Python that DOES NOT rely on 1 or more dunder methods.

I can think of 1 off the top of my head. If you can think of 2 operations, you get a ⭐ (I don't know how to give a high five through a computer).

harris,

@treyhunner is and is not? (I wouldn’t initially have thought of the latter as a separate operator but apparently Python’s docs do: https://docs.python.org/3/reference/expressions.html#is)

Indieweb and static-site generator lovers, how do you host and organizelarge media? I want to share videos and photosets on the web but I don’t love the idea of just hosting them with YouTube, etc. Git isn’t great for large files and GitHub charges to host them so I don’t feel like I can just add them to my 11ty repo.

What solutions are out there? Ideally something that can be cheaply hosted and easy to integrate with 11ty, mirror, and migrate freely.

Kinda ironic that Agent Smith is the most complex human-like character in The Matrix.

I know it fills a lot of people with dread, but I’m personally kinda stoked to see some @threads.net handles popping up in my feed

Did you know that there are tens of thousands of Mastodon servers? Did you know that all of them have been spamming me for 2 days now?

Every time I go on the “for you” feed on threads I want to yell at every other person.

harris,

@misc My limited experience with Threads is that the algorithm seems tuned for outrage. Seeing a bunch of transphobic bs in all my suggested posts really turned me off of the whole deal.

Looking for options for a live auto transcription of an event today. Stream will be on instagram, captions are for internal use. Tested Mac and iPhone built in transcription features on video streams, they came up short. Otter.ai passed the test, but we need more than its 30 free minutes per session, and don’t need all the AI bullshit - wondering if there’s a cheaper option.

harris,

@misc What does "AI bullshit" mean in this case given that AFAIK all audio transcription is ML-based? Do the captions need to be broadcast live? Whisper is OpenAI's audio transcription model and you can run it in CLI yourself or use any of a number of GUI wrappers people have built to run it locally:

Buzz has a free version as well as a Mac-native paid version: https://chidiwilliams.github.io/buzz/docs

MacWhisper has a free and pro version: https://goodsnooze.gumroad.com/l/macwhisper

Okay, troubleshooting question for any users of #iOS #Shortcuts:

I created this shortcut so that I could quickly log in a spreadsheet what time I took my antibiotics every day. The Numbers action works great on its own.

I added the “Go to Home Screen” action at the end so it would dump me back on my Home Screen when it’s done. Now the Numbers action works inconsistently. It’s as though it sometimes sends me back to the Home Screen before the previous action completes. Is there a fix?

harris,

@matthewcassinelli Thank you! I figured I might have to do that, but good to get confirmation from a pro. A little annoying that it doesn’t Just Work.

People like to say that "AI" is different from crypto in that there are actual useful applications, and that's true. But the vast majority of people you're expecting to come up with those applications are the same people who were just trying to build products on the blockchain.

harris,

@misc Idk, there's a number of next gen AI products that I think are genuinely useful and quietly succeeding: GitHub Copilot works great for me. There's a lot of creative professional software that's incorporating modern ML models in ways that seem genuinely useful (my partner works on audio editing tools and their AI stuff seems along similar lines of usefulness to autotune).

Of course, I'm talking purely about usefulness here, ethical questions about training notwithstanding.

Well, I don’t know what that was I’m just getting over, but it wasn’t covid and it wasn’t fun

harris,

@misc I agree with your assessment—you’re likely to still test PCR positive from your prior infection (if only PCR results included cycle counts that could help!) and somewhat less likely to get covid after already having had it this winter. Obviously not impossible but I’d personally rank you having covid as low probability.

harris,

@misc Out of curiosity, did you also get a flu test?

harris,

@misc Only through a doc. Should be covered by insurance, though not sure if a doctor will give you one in symptoms (the main reason to get a flu test is to have the option to start antivirals in the first two days). I’d hope they would just because there’s emotional value to Knowing what you have. The at home flu tests are expensive unfortunately.

Not sure what your symptoms are but characteristic flu symptoms are sudden onset high fever and severe cold symptoms FYI

A full week of wastewater data now shows a steep decline in covid numbers in the Boston area.

One interesting thing is that the wave peaks at January 1st. I would have expected it to be after January 1st due to transmission at New Years parties. This could imply that covid waves now are more influenced by population immunity and seasonal factors and less by human behaviors (like having parties)—though I imagine all of the above are factors.

(As ever, I'm not an expert.)

Do other Inbox Zero people also practice Browser Tabs Zero? Or are the two not necessarily correlated?

harris,

@ntnsndr I do both but I’ve never been a browser tab hoarder. As soon as I exceed like 10 or so I close everything except my pinned tabs. It’s just how I’ve been ever since tabs were invented. If I want to save something for later, that’s what bookmarks are for!

One fear I have for my Israeli friends is that they will be dragged to hell by the warmongering right. It seems hard to be antiwar Israeli right now. War doves are forced to develop rationalizations to support the massacre of Gazans, which will eventually be extended to other wars, even retroactively.

An Israeli friend of mine who I know was a pacifist before this war just wrote that the Afghanistan war made Americans safer and the war in Gaza is similarly justified. It breaks my heart to see.

I know the @signalapp folks are stretched thin, but one immensely helpful thing they could do is provide a way to convert X links to Nitter automatically. Idk though, I’m guessing that’s too specific for them to just do, and a plugin architecture is probably asking too much?

harris,

@misc I don’t really think services should rewrite URLs in messages, especially security oriented ones 😕

Up until this week @paulbiggar was on the board at a fairly substantial tech company that he co-founded. If you work in tech, you’ve probably heard of it; if you don’t, you probably haven’t. But then he wrote a blog post.

He’s no longer a director of that company. The CEO, Jim Rose, has clarified that Paul does not speak for them and that CircleCI “is committed to our customers in Israel and around the world.”

Read my blog post about it:

Is there any Mastodon app that automatically batches Mastodon notifications when they get over a certain threshold? I had a post get popular and I really don't need to get a notification every 5 seconds that someone liked or faved my silly toot.

(This is, in particular, a feature request for @MonaApp since I like everything else about it! 😇)
