Are you a fancy pants foodie who likes fancy jam?

Have you been sad because your jam got mold after only a month or so?

That's how fancy jam works, no preservatives. You pay the price, but I've found a solution that's worked for years:

After you crack the jam open and use it (always with a clean knife, minimize time it's open! Don't let spores in!) Pour a thin layer of honey over the top of the jam. This will prevent mold. It's yummy too.

(What's your food preservation tip?)

dynode,
@dynode@mas.to avatar

@futurebird

One could also put in more sugar and/or some kind of acid (citric/acetic etc.)

But honey does at least one of those things, and thru some other mechanism I have to read up on 😋

Boy, I sure know a lot of people with Covid right now, some of whom feel like absolute death. They're all vaccinated, nearly all of them have had Covid at least once, and most of them are surprised to find that they're sick.

I recommend changing your behavior for at least the next few weeks. Don't go to that crowded indoor gathering. Wear a well-fitting N-95 in that store. Bask in seasonal hygge in your own home.

dynode,
@dynode@mas.to avatar

@jfmezei @waldoj

I don't think this is an absolute thing. Any previous exposure to some variant of the virus should make your immune system more aware of this kind of infection.

Of course being vaccinated and boosted is preferable over having actual infections.

Gardening observation: after record rainfall in our area, my garden is going into "jungle mode" -- ie everything is growing very fast and large. Many volunteers!

In great contrast, the house I am staying at now (very close by) the garden beds are doing: nothing.

The difference is here they have removed all organic matter as a matter of course (previously thrown in the trash, now to the yard bin), and only used chemical fertilizers (for 50 years). Also used to regularly spray weeds wit weed killer.

At my house, every last organic scrap of food or plant trimming gets composted and turned into the garden.... Totally supercharges the garden beds.

#gardening

dynode,
@dynode@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr

I live in a flat with a communal back yard and garden and a lot of of organic waste leaves in wheelie bins picked up by the municipality.

Thinking of proposing to direct all to a compost heap, it is not hard to maintain.

I also have a small DIY composting bin on my balcony, food and other organic waste goes on top, black earth comes out 🙂

    "mixed with air"

    And that is not very likely to happen. You will need to mix air and (gaseous) hydrogen which would be an enormous volume and hope it will not disperse or prematurely ignite.
    It also requires heat to make the hydrogen gaseous and up to ignition temperature.

    HELLO THERE!

    I’m getting a lot of questions about Threads, so here’s a short thread (pun intended) which should provide clarity on our position.

    We chose many months ago to block Threads because of two primary concerns. Firstly we saw performance issues last November because of explosive growth, and while we have much stronger infrastructure now we are keen to avoid that happening again. We also have concerns as to whether Threads will manage to effectively moderate their users at launch.

    if you have one of these CO2 data loggers, be aware that there's a small lithium coin cell inside. it seems to be for the RTC that keeps the correct timestamps for logs even when the power is disconnected.

    this battery, predictably, has no undervoltage lockout. so, if left unplugged, it'll eventually drain to the point of permanent failure. when it does, you won't be able to power the unit on. screen backlight flashes briefly, but that's it. remove the battery and it works again.

    PCB inside the device. There's a coin cell holder at the bottom, and the battery has been removed from it.

    dynode,
    @dynode@mas.to avatar

    @gsuberland

    Why doesn't it use some kind of rechargeable battery or a supercap?

    Hell, I use old radio scanners that just use a big electrolytic capacitor to retain the memory when unplugged from power 😋

    Built a out of a wheel spoke and some galvanized steel strips. Seems to work OK but I still have weak reception of a repeater that is basically line of sight. Another repeater is full quieting on receive so I suspect a coax or receiver issue.

    dynode,
    @dynode@mas.to avatar

    @ai6yr @N3VEM

    It is not really critical as it is receive only. But I am getting suspicious of the coax and receiver as I have tried multiple antennas and I keep getting noise signals on UHF.

    It is weird how a repeater that can be received by a scanner inside on a piece of coax somehow is noisy on a dedicated outside antenna. Something is wrong here and I will find out 🙂

    dynode,
    @dynode@mas.to avatar

    @N3VEM @ai6yr

    I now have a decent signal, also changed some connectors, end of coax now has an N connector going directly into the antenna and on the other side a UHF connector going directly into the scanner...
