Hmm, methinks my 1980 era tires are no longer good. I was wondering why stuff stopped rolling smoothly.

Something trying to pop out elsewhere on the other tube
Yet another bubble forming on s tire

Saved by the Fediverse. @bud_t and @davidnewman and others told me I should get wider tires, these just arrived a few days ago. #BikeTooter

@ai6yr @davidnewman and Gatorskins nonetheless! Those are tough to puncture! Good choice for a multi purpose bike, though they ride a little rough.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@bud_t @davidnewman Picked them because of the puncture resistance, lots of crud on the streets here. They ride a LOT SMOOTHER than the ones that were blowing out, LOL. Though I need to tune the tire pressure. Imagine NOT FEELING EVERY CRACK ON THE ROAD, ha!

@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@bud_t I'm thinking I should have changed these awhile ago. I thought I did, but the tube is disintegrating inside the old tire. Good thing I also bought new tubes. #biketooter #tubes

Survived my trip to the library and back, although one tire did go caterwonky and start rubbing against the frame until I straightened it out. Better go look up how to align those tires better. 🤔

jbaggs,

@ai6yr That doesn't sound like it's inflated properly or the bead isn't seated correctly.

Or did you mean the wheel isn't aligned?

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@jbaggs Wheel wasn't aligned quite right. Just my lack of proper tension on the quick release, no doubt.

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr argh! Looks like it's been wet in there too!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@bud_t Is that bad?

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr could be bad for the rim and rim tape over time, as well as the stem from the tube!

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@bud_t Hmm, maybe I should get new rim tape... it's the same age. What should I get?

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr is it fiber or plastic rim tape? Whatever it is, just make sure it is protecting the tube from the spoke nipples.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@bud_t Plastic... very old plastic.

bud_t,
@bud_t@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ai6yr I would replace with fiber/cloth rim tape

dynode,
@dynode@mas.to avatar

@ai6yr @bud_t @davidnewman

The narrower the tires, the more you are a roadie 😄

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@dynode @bud_t @davidnewman Well, I mean, these are still 700x23.

davidnewman,
@davidnewman@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr @dynode @bud_t A useful tire pressure resource:

https://silca.cc/pages/sppc-form

After years of running high pressures (110+ psi on 21s and 23s), I’ve been finding lower and wider (<= 70 psi on 25s) is both faster and more comfortable.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@davidnewman @dynode @bud_t Aha! Your magic calculator tells me 99 rear and 95 front. I put them a bit lower based on some random Internet page and it felt a bit slower and spongy... probably because the bicycle + me + a backpack full of books was a lot heavier than your typical person racing around:

W6KME,
@W6KME@mastodon.radio avatar

@ai6yr @bud_t It's taken decades for the racing world to understand what the engineers said all along...wider tires are LESS drag overall on anything but a perfectly glass-smooth surface.

All cyclists know that skinny tires give a rougher ride. Every whack to your ass represents energy removed from your forward motion. A taller sidewall loses far less energy over every bump.

Save those 19s for the velodrome, not the road.

me_valentijn,
@me_valentijn@mastodon.social avatar

@W6KME @ai6yr @bud_t

... but spandex looks ridiculous with fat tires 😐

whack,
@whack@hachyderm.io avatar

@me_valentijn @W6KME @ai6yr @bud_t I look equally goofy on 23mm and 38mm tires 😂

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@whack @me_valentijn @W6KME @bud_t So you're saying I shouldn't be tooling around town with either cargo pants and cargo shorts on the bike?

jbaggs,

@W6KME @ai6yr @bud_t Now if only they'd get over low spoke count.

glightly,
@glightly@mastodon.social avatar

@ai6yr One of the things I've had trouble understanding over the years is that at least for me, tires age less the more I ride. If I have the cycle in the garage or tarped outside for a long time, the tire goes flat and the tire itself starts disintegrating...

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@glightly That makes sense, they say that's the same problem with car tires. I guess driving them regularly distributes the oils in the rubber and keeps it pliable... not driving them causes them to crack. (actually a risk with my car, now that I am not driving it very much)

ascentale,
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr @glightly That's interesting, I've had a similar experience. I had some Michelin tires completely disintegrate (dry rot?) while still in retail packaging after a number of years.
Other older tires, mounted on a bike that was ridden infrequently, but not-never seemed to still hold up.

ascentale,
@ascentale@sfba.social avatar

@ai6yr @glightly I sort of complained to Michelin about this, and their rep said something like "The tire is 7 years old, what did you expect?" which, while true, was kind of annoying, since I had 2 new old-stock tires that I had to dispose of without ever using.

My partner had a different, worse experience - her Michelin tires of a similar age disintegrated while going down a hill on her bike, after she did a ride after a lengthy hiatus.

So maybe it's not whether it's used as much as the material? I don't trust Michelin bike tires anymore as a result of all this dry-rot. The older tires that are still holding up well are Panaracer tires.

ai6yr,
@ai6yr@m.ai6yr.org avatar

@ascentale @glightly Good to know.... Sounds like their tire softener eats the tires, eventually.
