@JohanEmpa Myself I’m curious to at least see how federating #Threads turns out. In our favor works that only posts and comments that are deemed “worthy” by the community will show up. I doubt my home flow will suffer, and i don’t expect the local to either.

As users we can easily block Threads if it turns out we want to. But I have full respect for admins that don’t want to be overwhelmed by traffic and moderation. If that happens to #MastodonGreen I expect you to pull the emergency brake.

Sweden’s climate pollution should have been down. The Nord Stream pipeline leak sent it skyrocketing

The major gas leak from the sabotaged Nord Stream pipeline last year pushed Sweden’s annual plant-heating emissions up by 7%, the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency reported Thursday

Without the Nord Stream leak, Sweden’s climate emissions would have actually been down 5% from 2021 levels

https://www.cnn.com/2023/12/14/climate/sweden-methane-nord-stream-pipeline-climate/index.html

#MassExtinction #pollution #ecology #environment #climate #Sweden

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@Snoro Greenhouse gas emissions was down by 5% last year.

If the huge emission from the NordStream leak is included emissions would instead increase by 7%. But that’s still to be decided. Sweden is not connected to that pipeline, and has no economic or other interest in it, even though the leak happened within the Swedish economic zone.

Discussions are still ongoing. The emissions could be counted towards the countries owning and consuming gas from the pipeline.

In Denmark, we can follow the electricity production online.

Right this moment, our windmills produce 3819 Megawatt, while the consumption is 3946.

Wind generation is best during the winter. On average 67 percent of all power generated is from wind during the year, and in 7 years we expect to pass 100 percent.

@randahl Can you say anything about district heating in Denmark? I know those CHP plants produce both electricity and heat, thus at the same time reducing the amount of electricity consumed and adding to the produced. How large factor are they in Denmark? And what’s the predominant fuel?

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@parismarx Elon Musk is picking a strange hill to die on indeed. If, as Tesla claims, workers already have as good or better conditions than a collective bargaining agreement would guarantee, what’s the problem? Moreover, by negotiating an agreement, unions would not just back off and end the strikes, they would be legally obligated to. Strikes are illegal once a collective bargaining agreement is signed. There’s a reason (normal) businesses like them.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@glynmoody Nordic countries have a “contract” between on one hand the government, and on the other employee and employer organizations, that they negotiate agreements between themselves, while the government takes a hands off approach and refrain from regulating the labor market (e.g. minimum wages). This model has worked surprisingly well for decades, with few conflicts and generally a cooperative spirit between unions and businesses. Tesla wants to break this model.

@sarahjelm @education @edutooter @edutooters @socialscience @politicalscience #PISA is interesting. But I wonder, how on earth did #OECD of all organizations become the ones that decide how we should measure and compare education efficacy? What is their expertise in the field, and how and when did they acquire it? What is their agenda, their view on which metrics are useful for comparisons, and which are not? What weight do they attribute to different aspects of knowledge and abilities?

denspier, (edited )
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@mapto @sarahjelm @education @edutooter @edutooters @socialscience @politicalscience And why are OECD promoting the PISA tests, adding their weight behind them?

The huge importance countries are giving to the tests likely have a huge impact on their education policies, and even goals. Measuring is good, but to uncritically rely on a too narrow scope, and a single philosophy and methodology, could be problematic. Are there any alternatives to the PISA that offer other insights and perspectives?

@scottjenson True, absolutely. But Android could have kept an edge by supporting phones with physical keyboards. They had clear advantages, especially for certain users and applications. Soft keyboards have their advantages of course, but when it comes to speed and accuracy their best case scenario is to be “only slightly worse”.
