Screenshotting this post 👇🏻 in order to quote post it! I don’t know where people get the idea that quote posting = dunks, personally I feel that that opinion is just Twitter brain.

Every major social platform from Tumblr, to Facebook, to LinkedIn and more has the ability to natively quote post. This is because the primary use of such a feature is to amplify information w added context or to open a new line of discussion. Replies are used far more often for harassment but we don’t ban replies!

@mttaggart @taylorlorenz I think you are knocking in open doors. The debate is now closed and quote posts are on the Mastodon road map. If more people chipped in a couple of bucks in support each month, new features would be added faster.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@alxndr @rmondello I had to check for myself and yes, the article really says “Sweden’s notoriously cruel COVID response was the better pandemic approach; Sweden euthanized elderly people with COVID instead of treating them when their hospitals were overwhelmed.”
Sorry, but that’s an absolutely ridiculous statement, lending the whole article zero credibility.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@alxndr @rmondello Thanks for putting me straight. I’ll read the article more carefully. In my defense I was flabbergasted at the suggestion (by Jacobin) that Sweden euthanized people that caught Covid.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@alxndr @rmondello I haven’t read this particular study, but I think it’s safe to say there are others that give a somewhat different picture. It’s unfortunate that Covid has become politicized, it’s difficult enough to learn from our countries’ various mistakes anyway.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@alxndr @rmondello The LAT article gets a few things wrong. I’m not going to comment extensively, but one thing I think it’s important to know is that in Sweden there is strict separation between the government and the authorities. Exactly as it’s supposed to work in Sweden, policies to deal with the pandemic came from the health authorities (non-political bureaucrats), not from the government, and the authorities basically followed plans they had in place beforehand.

adde, to tesla

I belive the Swedish strike to be unnecessary as only 13 people of a total of 130 are striking. It is more of a principle than anything.

Anyway, surprising result to say the least.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@adde Its amazing that even 13 mechanics dared to defy Tesla’s anti-union stance.

Perhaps the current model, that business and worker organizations negotiate labor conditions sector by sector and the government takes a hands off approach, really needs to be changed. But the principle at stake is whether Swedish citizens and voters decide that, or a billionaire from abroad.

Five interesting (albeit random) facts:

📹 https://youtu.be/sYzfKiIWN4g

🖐🏾 Viking helmets did not have horns (they were added by poets & artists)

👌🏾 Lady Godiva never rode through town naked to lower taxes

🤟🏾 Napoleon was averaged size (5 feet 7 inches), but under French 🇫🇷 measurements he was 5 feet 2 inches.

✌🏾 Vomitorium was not a place for 🤮, but for crowds to enter & exit

☝🏾 Humanity knew Earth 🌍 was round for over 7,000 years.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@CStamp @darnell It wasn’t just French measurements, every country had their own “inch”, “foot”, “mile” and whatnot back in the days. Until the metric system had fully replaced the old measurements, machinery had to have knobs and settings for all sorts of inches. Trade between countries was a total mess and quality issues common.

The US on the other hand had only one type of inch to deal with, so much less of a problem. Still wacky, but at least a single kind of wackiness.

I am optimistic but skeptical that this miniature nuclear reactor will work, but a test model will allegedly go online in Canada 🇨🇦 in 2029.

If this is more science fact than science fiction, it would be an enormous breakthrough & could help reduce reliance on fossil fuels to power homes worldwide.

👉🏾 Scientists developed portable nuclear reactor with amazing feature: 'Transformative for our economy, industry, and communities' https://www.thecooldown.com/green-tech/westinghouse-evinci-nuclear-reactor-saskatchewan-canada/

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@darnell @schnedan Large scale reactors were economically feasible due to heavy subsidies. SME reactors would probably be even worse from an economic perspective, but could have niche uses.

What’s required for feasible nuclear power is “solid state reactors” with no moving parts. Think solar panels that doesn’t need sunlight and that are cheap to produce.

But for at least the next decade, the cheapest electricity will come from wind farms.

@alexisperrier Musk is waging a war not only against unions, but against whole countries and how they have decided to run the labor market: not by government legal enforcements but by businesses and unions acting like adults and negotiate labor conditions sector by sector. By refusing to take part and wanting to upend a model that has served countries well since the forties, the Tesla brand is severely tarnished.

--Garbage is collecting outside Tesla centers;
--Cleaning staff are refusing to clean showrooms;
--Pension funds are threatening to pull investments;

@RealJournalism

  • No law compels businesses to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement.
  • The right to strike for a collective bargaining agreement is protected in the constitution.
  • Striking is prohibited once an agreement is signed.
  • The government’s hands off approach to labor conditions means it doesn’t enforce for example minimum wages, but in turn businesses and unions are expected to take responsibility.
  • Only the shadiest of companies refuse collective bargaining.

Swedish newspaper Dagens Nyheter had lawyers review Tesla employment contracts they had obtained, and lawyers were shocked. The legalese for a car mechanic could entail up to 80 pages of fine print, with unheard of lifelong NDAs and the signing off of any intellectual property rights whether related to work or to private life.

Tesla claim that contracts are “as good or better” than standard negotiated contracts. The question is, for whom?

@glynmoody 2 million people are locked into the Gaza Strip. 1% of them have now been killed, 5% disabled or injured, and god knows how many made to suffer as a result of horrific health conditions and lack of food, clean water and shelter.

The Gaza Strip is practically a large detention facility and Israel is “culling” the people living there in an unconstrained revenge attack for the Hamas October atrocities. These horrors will affect the region and people’s lives for decades to come.

@glynmoody Unfortunately yes, there will be no winners out of this.
