lowresolution, to ChatGPT

#Bard is available in 180 countries, but not in the EU, because of the #GDPR, even after the blocking of #ChatGPT by the Italian Garante.

I believe we need to think on how much #eu policies are pushing Europe and its economy further and further away from innovation and new technologies.

Europe is falling behind, the lag is visible in many areas and is becoming a serious problem.

@lowresolution GDPR is a no nonsense common sense regulation. It’s not difficult to abide by. If Google can’t, rather than won’t, I’m more worried about their ability to innovate.

denspier,
@denspier@mastodon.green avatar

@lowresolution Europe is not bad at innovation, think NMT, GSM, Skype, Spotify, Swish and Vipps (digital payments) etc. etc. But we’re not very good at keeping businesses European. But that particular problem predeceases GDPR by decades. I think the problem lies elsewhere.

I love everything about #Eurovision except the, uh, music. 😬

    🚨 MASTODON NOW HAS COMMENT THREADING! 🚨

    This makes following a conversation much easier, especially in long threads with many participants.

    It's a major usability improvement, and makes Mastodon much easier to use.

    https://mastodon.social has comment threading right now, and only on the native web. This feature should be available on other servers and clients with a future update.

    See screenshot as an example.

    How do you feel about the addition of this feature?

    @fediversenews

    denspier,
    @denspier@mastodon.green avatar

    @atomicpoet @fediversenews In favor. But perhaps I’m biased since working with KOM systems. We stripped quoted sections from the post that was replied to when importing from other systems. In KOM they were not needed and only reduced readability. Way to go!

    Bluesky vs. Mastodon is not as black and white as many seem to think.

    Let me explain why. 🧵

    1. A Twitter founder funds and advises Bluesky.

    Okay, a Twitter founder (@ev) runs a for-profit instance, and another (@biz) has offered to advise Mastodon.

    1. Bluesky accepted VC money.

    A VC firm owns 3 of the top 5 largest Mastodon servers

    1. An evil corporation (Twitter) helped develop Bluesky.

    An evil corporation (Google) helped develop the Fediverse

    I have further thoughts here...

    denspier,
    @denspier@mastodon.green avatar

    @atomicpoet Isn’t 3) simply because BlueSky have but one instance so far?

    atomicpoet, to random

    The problem with Bluesky is that:

    • notifications don't work very well
    • the portable identity is not easy to implement for Joe Q. Public
    • there's no way to see the firehose of posts
    • the algorithm doesn't show me anything to my liking
    • moderation is highly suspect
    • there's only one node

    That's a lot of things they have to fix!

    denspier,
    @denspier@mastodon.green avatar

    @atomicpoet The only reason they haven’t set up at least a handful of nodes for this “proof of concept” is likely that it doesn’t work very well yet. What they have been doing all these years I have no idea? 🤷🏼‍♂️

    "Civil servants face effectively staged a coup"

    Funny old coup when they end up being bullied and not in power.

    Idiot

    RT @TiceRichard
    Who runs Britain?

    Civil servants have effectively staged a coup, making ministers impotent.

    None of these feeble complaints would have stood in the real world private sector

    Firstly made way too late, secondly utterly pathetic in content

    @pauldjohnston Isn’t the problem ministers in the UK have a very hands-on role, acting like some kind of managers, even down to taking decisions in individual cases? There’s no separation of powers in the UK. In other countries “ministerial rule” is the worst kind of corruption.

    denspier,
    @denspier@mastodon.green avatar

    @pauldjohnston I’m simply surprised to learn how ministers in the UK government are taking direct leadership, CEO like, of authorities. Both making the law, and being part of executing it. It feels far from what I’m used to, it’s referred to as “ministerial rule” and is unacceptable. Countries do things differently, but it surprises me still.

    denspier,
    @denspier@mastodon.green avatar

    @pauldjohnston I’m not from the UK and have only recently begun to learn about UK politics and democracy. I guess I simply assumed or took many things for granted, but have come to realize things work very differently in the UK. For better and worse of course. But surprised? Oh, indeed.

    I've decided to ACTIVELY decouple from Twitter: Every day, I go back and DM at least 10 of my followers, telling them I've moved here and to follow me here instead (I remove them as followers after that DM). A number of them have set up accounts as a result.

    Please do the same if you're more active here than on That's how you can help the

    Boost if you agree.

    I'm going to jump off this post from @mmasnick concerning @onthemedia going well out of its way to condemn Mastodon as a failure in this week's episode. I've been a fan of OTM for years, but this is a surprisingly short-sighted take from a program that USUALLY gets it.

    This place is ONLY a failure if your primary motivation is snagging passive and unthinking eyeballs.

    But this represents a false metric.

    If you consider the engagement ratio on Twitter compared to here, the Fediverse is clearly more successful -- in that you'll have a HIGHER percentage of ACTIVE users ENGAGING with your posts. Hell, even an obscure creative weirdo like me has been surprised by how TIGHTER the bonds are here and how much GREATER the level of engagement is.

    On the Media obviously has to answer to WNYC. And big numbers -- meaning a total representing active and INACTIVE -- is the false metric. Media orgs need to readjust the numbers on what qualifies as success.

    #mastodon #engagement #audience

    @mattbrown @edwardchampion @mmasnick @zoeschiffer Uhm, but mail is an example of a “federated” protocol driven service, not walled in platforms. True, GMail is big, big from GMail you can mail anyone whatever they are and vice versa. And you can leave GMail anytime you like and still keep mailing. If anything, mail is a good example of how protocols such as smtp, pop, and ActivityPub beats platforms.
