I complimented our restaurant hostess this morning on how well her wrap dress suited her figure and she was absolutely thrilled. It really made her morning. I should pay people more compliments, I think, I just sometimes worry about whether I seem sincere. Do you readily give out compliments to strangers?

charllthomas,
@charllthomas@mstdn.games avatar

@purplepadma I think there’s also something about woman to woman compliments. They have more gravitas.

Thinking about the “Fancy Restaurant” episode of #Bluey, and how society often puts that honeymoon period of a relationship on a pedestal.

Once you’ve been together a while, it becomes less about gifts and trips away, and more about small acts of kindness and consideration.

“I made your favourite”
“You have the last one”
“I’ll get up with the kids, go back to sleep”
“Have you drank enough water today?”
“I’m off to work - there’s coffee on the warm for you”

I actually like that more.

When I was a teen, I was aggressively anti-theist, imagining myself quite clever for demonstrating how silly religious beliefs are.

But life is fucking hard and I learned not to begrudge anyone any solution they’ve come up with to make life a little more comprehensible to them.

I don’t share anyone’s religious beliefs, but it’s not as if I’ve figured out how to run my own life successfully. I shouldn’t be in the business of telling other people how or how not to handle the world.

charllthomas,
@charllthomas@mstdn.games avatar

@HeavenlyPossum I don’t have an issue with other people being religious on a personal level. If believing there is a god/gods provides comfort, then fair enough.

The issue is when it goes beyond personal choice. It’s one thing to say “I’m not allowed to do that because my religion tells me so.” and entirely different to say “YOU’RE not allowed to do that, because MY religion tells me so”

    @pootriarch Essentially anything you would put in an oven. We got one for Christmas and so far I’ve done in it:
    Roasted potatoes / carrots / parsnips
    Sausages
    Crispy tofu
    Mushroom wellington
    Cheese and potato pasties
    Chips
    Fajita style “chicken”
    Roasted med veg
    Cookies / cookie dough
    Crispy kale
    Garlic mushrooms

    It’s also great for reheating stuff where a microwave would just make it hard or soggy. For example leftover chips from the chip shop, or even donuts.

    Sitting here watching the news about the ongoing #measles outbreaks is quite upsetting when you have a baby who can’t have the vaccine for another three months, so you’re reliant on herd immunity.

    Reminder that the MMR #vaccine has been around for over 50 years and is safe and gives ~99% immunity for life.

    By contrast, measles is highly contagious, and can cause - as well as obvious discomfort - meningitis, pneumonia, fits, deafness, blindness and sometimes death (though thankfully very rare)

    Starting the year with a quiet moment of gratitude.

    1. We are currently away in a beautiful spot in Norfolk, surrounded by trees, wildlife and very few people
    2. The sound of my 7 month old daughter’s soft breathing as she sleeps on my chest. This time last year we had just passed the point of viability and this moment felt a long way off.
    3. We woke 7yo up for the NYE for the first time, and as a result he took himself off for a NAP this morning!

    BONUS: It’s not raining!

    Parenting rant complete.

    Otherwise glad for Christmas to be over. I both love and hate it, and so I’m glad I’ve got another eleven months before I have to think about it again.

    One of the best things I think that could be done for the gentle #parenting movement now is to stop calling it “gentle” parenting. It makes it sound like some airy-fairy hippy thing and that kids get to do what they like.

    Treating them with kindness and compassion, holding boundaries around safety etc, apologising when you mess up. Such a thing should just be called parenting.

    Anything else - spanking, time-outs, withholding love, should be called what it is… coercive, fear-based compliance.

    I’m sorry if it comes off as smug, I can’t explain the level of joy I feel that we never bought an “elf on the shelf”. So much unnecessary stress at an already stressful time of year.

    Other parents out there who are sick of this bizarre new “tradition”, next year I strongly advise saying to your kids that both you AND Santa already know they’re good kids, so you decided there was no need for the creepy little spy watching their every move.

    Honestly, it’s freeing.

    Yeah, if you’re the kind of person who thinks wrapping empty boxes up as presents and then when your child “misbehaves” you throw it away / burn it is a “parenting hack”, you’re a fucking sociopath and we can’t be friends.

    One of the things I like best about having children is when you get to be silly with them. Tonight 7yo and I collaborated on a drawing of a character which got progressively sillier, until both of us were falling about squealing and cackling with laughter.

    Honestly, having to be a grown-up most of the time and be serious and go to work and pay taxes etc sucks. It’s so great to instead be introducing a 7yo boy to how to draw stink lines and flies around ginormous toenails.

    There are no ‘deals’.
    It’s all a facade.
    It’s nihilism, but for retail. 😆

    charllthomas,
    @charllthomas@mstdn.games avatar

    @britt Literally. When you realise that no sound business model would allow a significant loss of money, so if a company can afford to discount an item that heavily, that’s probably nearer to the actual value of the product and they’re probably making you pay through the nose on “normal” days.

    Husband came home having exchanged some of his old tech for a #Steam Deck.

    First game I played on it was “Untitled Goose Game” which was 50% off discounted.

    The description is “it’s a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible goose” It’s a really simple #game but you essentially just run around being a menace and I love it.

    Public sale of #fireworks should be banned and restricted to public displays at limited periods of time only.

    Instead, we get inconsiderate arseholes letting off sporadic fireworks at random times of the night constantly disturbing children sleeping and scaring anxious animals.

    charllthomas,
    @charllthomas@mstdn.games avatar

    @EighthLayer I love fireworks but I hate the fact that the onus is put on pet owners to essentially find all these solutions to keep their terrified animals calm, even sedating them, rather than just restricting displays to less / non-residential areas.

    Short of a maybe a few sparklers, I don’t really see why people need to do fireworks in their back gardens anyway.

    @cynar Its well known in my family that I always wear odd socks (not because I want to, but because I can’t ever face pairing them).

    Last Christmas my mum bought me a set of five odd socks that were deliberately mismatched but also sort of matching. The problem is my mother in law bought me the same exact set of five socks.

    So I now have five pairs of socks and I’m back to square one again.

    Tonight we had a film night and we introduced the 6 year old to Stuart Little, which incidentally came out when my husband and I were both six.

    I remember loving it as a kid, but as an adult I do find it such a wild concept that they literally adopted a talking mouse and treated it as their child.

    It also took me back to memories of playing the Stuart Little 2 game on PlayStation, a truly underrated game.

    Can we skip the dairy and still get a cheese that doesn't taste like plants?

    @ppatel We had vegan cheese as part of our grazing table buffet at our wedding last year which we got from a place called La Fauxmagerie in London, and it was all fantastic. Cathedral City (in the UK) also do the best extra mature cheddar style that’s available in supermarkets.

    It’s still not exactly the same but it’s come a long way since the luminous yellow plastic-tasting “cheese” that was the only thing available when I went vegan 10 years ago.
