holy cow! @lisamelton has boosted my post on what the pastor of my church had the audiacity to say about giving others basic and advanced human compassion. i'm glad because it really needs to have reach, signaling that liberal positions in #Christianity are not only allowed, but the norm given how the founder of the religion acted.

Elections matter. It is vital that we have pro-equality, pro-rights elected officials at every level of government in every state. Thank you, Laura Kelly.

To anyone in Kansas: reach out to your state representatives and senators to tell them to sustain the veto.

Yeah, I have the reputation in our friend group as the one to always turn down invites, but like, none of them are building an open source, federated IG alternative.

They just think i'm a nerd, and I'm okay with that.

Released in 2019, Blood: Fresh Supply is a remake of the 1997 first person shooter (FPS) Blood. I have previously reviewed the original Blood, but unfortunately, I can’t find my original post. I might as well review the remake made by Nightdive Studios – since I cannot praise Blood enough.

Nevertheless, let me repeat what I’ve said quite often: Blood is one of the greatest boomer shooters ever made. When people talk about Build engine games, they often speak about the Holy Trinity:

  1. Duke Nukem 3D
  2. Shadow Warrior
  3. Blood

Of the Holy Trinity, Blood is probably the least well-known. Yet, I think it might be my favourite.

Everything about this game is right: the action, the characters, the level design. But more importantly, it lives up to its name. For an FPS to call itself “Blood”, that’s practically a promise. And damn! Is there ever blood!

Believe it or not, there’s actually a decent story here. You are Caleb, a gunslinger who falls in love with a woman who happens to be a worshipper of the evil god Tchernobog. Sucking you into her cult, you eventually become one of the four Chosen. Then one day, Tchernobog kills all the Chosen. Well, some years later, you’re resurrected for unknown reasons – and you are out for revenge!

Let’s now talk about the best thing about this remake: the controls. The original Blood used an old school, primarily keyboard-driven method of controls. That means arrow keys instead of WASD. Sure, you could configure those controls, and I have, but it’s nice that I don’t have to do it. And to that end, mouse look works well too. This remake brings modern controls to Blood – by default – and it’s amazing.

In terms of graphics, Blood is everything I wanted in a modern remake. That means preserving all the nuances of the Build engine – even though it’s now redone in the newer Kex engine. You see, even though the Build engine is old, it’s still amazing. So amazing that new boomer shooters are still made with it today. It’s so integral to the experience of Blood that I don’t think Blood can be Blood without looking like the Build engine.

However, what I definitely want is to play this game in 1920x1200 resolution, making the most of my widescreen monitor. I’ll happily take those extra pixels and maximize them for all they’re worth.

In terms of sound, nothing has changed. And it really shouldn’t. The ambience is excellent. The occasional voice-acting is over the top especially when Caleb says quips like, “I’m going to paint the town red!” In terms of soundtrack, it’s suitably creepy. This is 90s sound design at its best.

If there’s a small quibble, it’s that Nightdive didn’t give this game as much effort as some of their other profile remakes. For example, the recent Star Wars: Dark Forces remake got controller input. It would have been nice to have that as an option with Blood: Fresh Supply.

Almost any modern PC can run this remake of Blood. You need a 2Ghz single core CPU, 1GB of RAM, 256MB of VRAM, and 1GB of space. While this game is only available natively on Windows, people have been known to get it to work with Linux via Proton if you switch the renderer to Vulkan. That said, support for Steam Deck is still unsupported.

Blood: Fresh Supply is a PC exclusive. It has never been released on console or mobile platforms. It surprises me that this game, neither back in the 90s or now, has remained a PC exclusive since Blood is so highly regarded.

This game has no micro-transactions nor DLC.

Monolith Productions developed Blood, and believe it or not, this is the first game they ever made. They later produced a sequel called Blood II: The Chosen. Afterwards, they made F.E.A.R., Gotham City Imposters, and Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor.

On Steam, Blood: Fresh supply has a 95% positive rating based on 5,235 reviews, while on GOG.com has a 4.4/5 verified owners rating. Most people agree that this is one of the greatest 90s boomer shooters ever. And while it does not get as much attention as Duke Nukem 3-D or Shadow Warrior, it is every bit as good as both of them. All three games are called the “Holy Trinity” for a reason. A few detractors say this game is too hard.

I disagree about this game being too hard. You can adjust difficulty, and the lowest level of difficulty is not too challenging – why not play this game on easy mode? There’s no shame in doing that. And if you can’t deal with easy mode, you should either not play first person shooters at all or learn to get good at them.

On both Steam and GOG.com, Blood: Fresh Supply sells for C$11.49. However, GOG.com is currently offering a C$66% discount, which means this game can be purchased there for C$3.89.

I definitely recommend Blood: Fresh Supply. Actually, if you like first person shooters at all – even slightly – I urge you to play this game. This truly is one of PC gaming’s great exclusive games, something you’ll never be able to experience anywhere else.

i remember one of the reasons i gave to my wife for why i was even on facebook back in the day was to keep in touch with certain creatives and family. however, now the luster of fb has worn off with my family and they are back to communicating via voice calls again or setting up in person meetings via text messages, i can't justify it. even to keep in touch with creatives. they're more and more coming to the fediverse.

caranmegil,

@kyonshi and there's the other thing i forgot to mention. i have contacts using messenger for their primary mode of communication. however, most don't answer and those who do usually change topics to how great their lord and savior trump is. i like these people, but their pushing of certain politics knowing full well i don't cater to them is unappealing.
