Mastodon is great, the only thing I miss on this app is quote posts. I know they have a bad rap bc of Twitter, but every major social network has this functionality for a reason (Tumblr, LinkedIn, Facebook, IG). As a journalist, Iโ€™d love to add commentary and amplify great info, build on pplโ€™s points, etc. You just canโ€™t do that the same wait with replies! Is there any chance we might get them on here?

brody,
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

@taylorlorenz Mastodon has put it on the roadmap since the last time this discussion came up! (https://joinmastodon.org/roadmap under "Planned")

Also one of the core developers wrote up a proposal (that I'm having a hard time finding right now) about how to have it implemented with consent controls (and consent for quoting can be revoked after the fact). So there's real thought going into it, seems like!

The Biden Administration just announced the new student loan forgiveness plan.

https://www.npr.org/2023/07/14/1187660793/student-loan-forgiveness-income-driven-repayment

A bit less clear than the last one. Sounds more like it adjusts how much you pay each month and what interest can accrue if you have an income-driven repayment plan?

Feels really weak, but it's something.

A short compilation of astronauts falling over on the Moon during the Apollo missions, showcasing their challenges with balance and movement caused by the Moon's low gravity, bulky spacesuits, and navigating the loose, dry lunar regolith.

@mcc I've had this problem before. You need to enable root motion on the animation.

Just discovered that Disco Elysium: The Final Cut is $10 on Steam right now.

If you have held out on Disco Elysium, folks...

Why is Apple financially supporting Twitter for something like this? Just stick it up on YouTube or make it free on the TV+ or iTunes or any of their half dozen other platforms.

brody,
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

@paul funny thing is: it IS free on AppleTV+. A lot of their shows have the pilot episode up for free.

Seeing as more and more TV shows exclusive to streaming services are being completely wiped from existence the moment they're canceled, I looked up if there is any way to own AppleTV+'s excellent For All Mankind.

There is! The physical release was published by a British company, so it, uh, seems to only be available to buy via Amazon UK. Which is weird. https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/For-All-Mankind-Season-One-Blu-ray/322254/

(but at least it's something.)

From skimming titles, it looks like the session on TNOs/Centaur dynamics is mostly about measuring ices on these bodies (which is cool [haha literally] but not my thing). So, I'm going to try the software session and see what neat stuff is happening there!

Was just reminded that the whole first season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is free to watch on YouTube and I can not recommend it enough. It is some of the most confident, fun sci-fi in years. https://youtu.be/IQ51gV0t6yM

Apparently they just announced my asteroid (yes I really do have an asteroid named after me and it's one of the coolest things that's ever happened to me!!) at the conference dinner, and I'm feeling even more sad that I couldn't go in person. SIGH.

But I have an asteroid named after me :) And I can watch all the talks online, which is pretty nice. And I didn't have to fly or figure out childcare or farm-sitting (or dump it all on my partner), so I guess this is fine.

By the way, I cannot recommend Streetpass for Mastodon enough.

It's a little browser extension that keeps track of Mastodon account links it finds as you browse the web and shows a little badge when it finds new ones.

I've had so many surprise hits, like "oh! I had no idea this person was on here!" https://streetpass.social/

@illusionofmana This looks like the kind of place I'd find posters for local comedy nights or book club meetups.

brody, to unrealengine
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

Very weird discovery I just made:

#UnrealEngine 5 seems to have a very similar but kinda different implementation of the Blueprint interface just for Control Rigs?? Like, node outputs have a collapse/expand button that doesn't exist in Regular Blueprints for some reason! Text sizes are different! The visual look of nodes has slightly changed! Seems so weird!! #gamedev

Control Rig Blueprints. All Vector pins have an Expand Pin arrow on them. Clicking them splits the pin into X/Y/Z pins. Convenient!

brody,
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

The Control Rig version of Blueprint is kinda worse, though. The background grid has a minor flicker when moving, Control+Dragging variables onto the grid still brings up the Get/Set menu instead of just giving you the getter node, it feels a little jankier. This is so weird.

I usually only read one book at a time, but I had a whackload of holds come in at once so I'm now jumping between a rather bizarre combination of 4 books right now:
-This is How you Lose the Time War (El-Motar/Gladstone)
-Outlander (Diana Gabaldon)
-The Ministry for the Future (Kim Stanley Robinson)
-Hope Matters (Elin Kelsey)

I had the first 2 "Murderbot Diaries" books (Martha Wells) also cycled in there but I devoured each of those (next ones are now in my library queue, really good!)

brody,
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

@sundogplanets god, I still think about Ministry for the Future constantly a year after reading it

I am enjoying my time with Tears of the Kingdom, but somethingโ€™s been gnawing at me.

Itโ€™s clear the biggest feedback Nintendo got about BotW is folks wanted more meaty dungeons. And their solution was to add more traditional, rigid Zelda game structure back in, which I think was the wrong call. BotW was exceptional when you just freely explored your curiosity and got rewarded for it with few other restraints or structure.

@kainoa Hey! Calckey looks really, really cool!!

The site says it supports (and implies "thoroughly supports") account migration. Does this include posts? :o

brody, to random
@brody@peoplemaking.games avatar

Looking at Calckey with great interest https://calckey.org/

  • ActivityPub-backed, so talks with Mastodon perfectly
  • Supports markdown and quote-posting
  • Really nice reactive UI
  • Users can make pages shared with the community (imagine a dev community creating and sharing articles on the instance!)
  • Has special-interest posting channels. I guess like making a shared timeline to post to instead of public? That sounds really cool!

Really wish there was a game dev instance!

The best thing about fediverse stuff is I can contemplate other social media systems without having to think about upending my whole social graph or losing contact with people here. It's basically just "hey, cool front-end!"
